Our students and teachers are working hard to finalise assessments. Students are putting their best effort into their learning and have been applying teachers’ feedback. Reports, along with class placement and 2025 school information, will be emailed to parents/carers on Wednesday 11 December. If we don’t have your up-to-date email address, you may miss this important information. If you need to update the school, please email mhssadmin@mangohillss.eq.edu.au
ACV9
In 2025 we are transitioning to the Australian Curriculum Version 9 (ACV9) to ensure our teaching in key areas like Maths and English aligns with the most current standards and best practices. By adopting this updated curriculum, we aim to provide students with the foundational skills and knowledge they need to succeed while keeping our teaching relevant and responsive to the latest educational research.
Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Framework
In 2025, learning area offerings and how and when we report may look a little different from previous years. State Schools follow the Kindergarten – Year 12 Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Framework which outlines recommended time allocations for learning areas and other mandates for schools. An area where the time allocations has changed is LOTE. The recommended time allocations for LOTE (Languages Other Than English) are increasing under ACV9. As such, LOTE will be taught for longer periods of time from Years 3 to 6 in 2025 onwards. Our Prep – Year 2 students will be offered other learning areas. Staff have worked hard to finalise year level learning areas and reporting guidelines, in line with the Department of Education, QLD, Kindergarten – Year 12 Framework. Please see offerings below.
Free Dress Day
On Friday 22 November our Student Council are having a free dress day, there will be no theme but appropriate sun safe attire must be worn. Gold coin donation. All funds raised will go towards Cancer Council.

This week in Care Class we will explore how we can show Care for Learning by exploring resilience. Resilience is regarded as the ability to cope with and bounce back after adversity. This can extend from day-to-day challenges through to life changing events.
In life, we all experience ups and downs, highs and lows, good times and not-so-good times. Being resilient helps us deal with things that are difficult and move on.
This is important so we can cope with whatever life throws at us and moving on means we can enjoy the good times that are often just around the corner!
Calling all parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and community members. We are urgently looking for more Crossing Supervisors to help our students and families get across the road before and after school safely.
This is a paid casual job and hours of paid work would be 7:45 am - 8:45 am and 2:30 pm - 3:15 pm. Days are flexible.
If you are interested in joining our team please email BSM@mangohillss.eq.edu.au
Please note that you must have or be willing to obtain a Blue Card, complete a Criminal History check, and pass a medical clearance.

Morning routines
It is fantastic to see so many of our Prep students using Stop, Drop and Go in the morning. Prep students have been demonstrating the Four Cares, by caring for self and caring for others as they wait at the crossing and listen for the whistle before making their way across the crossing. We are so impressed at the independence and confidence that our Prep friends are developing and thank you for encouraging this.
Unaccompanied Prep students need to be in the supervised Prep undercover area where they can play from 8.00 - 8:15am. The astroturf area is only available before school for students who are wearing a hat and are accompanied by a supervising adult. Thank you for your support in maintaining safe morning routines.

Literacy Development
It has been so exciting to see the amazing development our Year One Students have made this year. The school’s adoption of Jocelyn Seamer’s approach has truly made a difference to how the students have learnt to break ‘the code’ of how letters and the sounds they make work - work to make words and work to make words into sentences…. And not forgetting that breaking ‘the code’ leads into being able to read.
Here are some brief definitions which may help you understand how we teach language.
Phoneme: a small unit of sound
Phonics: read and pronounce words using the relationship between sounds (phonemes) and the letters which represent them.
This week I want to show you these features using photographs of student work.
Thank you students in 1R for sharing your work.
Numeracy Work
A featured unit of work for Year 1 this term has been about Money: how to identify the various coins we use and the value of each coin.
Teachers all have Mathematics Learning Walls similar to what is shown here.
Thank you 1J for sharing your Learning wall and examples of your learning journey this term.
We understand value of money. To help us learn this we counted popsticks to show the value. 1 popstick equals 1c.
From this we discovered that 100c is equal to a dollar.

Learning About Time and Calendars in Year 2
This term the students in Year 2 are learning all about time. They are learning to connect seasons to the months of the year, identify the number of days in each month and are exploring how calendars work.
Check out the children the resources the children in 2E have developed to help support their learning.

Here’s some fun ways you can engage your child in this learning at home:
- Practise saying the months of the year. A great place to do this is in the back of the car on the way to school!
- Practise saying the 30 Days rhyme:
Thirty days has September,
April, June and November,
All the rest have thirty-one
But February’s twenty eight,
The leap year, which comes once in four.
Gives February one day more.
- Talk about which months in the year have the most days and those that have the least.
- Discuss special events that happen throughout the year and talk about what month and season they are in.
- Show your child your family calendar. Talk about the events coming up and how much time there is between events.
- Help your child construct their own calendar on their iPad and enter their weekly activities eg. homework day, library borrowing, specialist lesson days. Use the calendar to talk about what’s happening in the week ahead.

Carer of the week
Throughout Semester 2, our students have consistently demonstrated the Four Cares every day. Many have earned Golden Tickets and Student of the Week awards in recognition of their positive efforts. Additionally, a select group has been honoured as Carers of the Week. These students' achievements are proudly showcased on the Year 3 noticeboard outside classrooms 3M, 3W, 3L, and 3S.
It’s inspiring to hear students share how they apply the Four Cares in their daily experiences at school, making meaningful connections with these core values. A special mention must go to Mr Taylor for co-ordinating this process for Year 3.

Maths in Year 4
This term our Year 4 students have been learning a range of strategies to solve the four operations - addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. They are solving a range of calculations and are working towards choosing appropriate strategies to solve the problems. Some of these strategies are the traditional algorithm, area model, split strategy and using the inverse to check their answers.
Be sure to ask your children about the strategies and you could even challenge your children by giving them a 2 digit calculation to solve!
Science
Check out the photos below of our students completing their final investigation in Science! They have been exploring forces, and investigating how forces impact the movement of different objects.

2025 Student Leadership
Please find below information regarding the 2025 Student Leadership process.
Student Leadership Applications: The applications submitted by students were of exceptional quality, making the shortlisting process challenging. The school is proud of all students who applied and we recognise this as a display of leadership in itself.
- Captaincy Shortlist Announcement: The shortlist of students for captaincy roles will be announced on Friday 15th November. Despite many students not making the shortlist due to the high number of applicants, they are still able to be school leaders by becoming Mango Mentors.
- Shortlisting Criteria: The selection process considered multiple factors, including:
-
- Completed Application Booklets
- Leadership Qualities Survey
- Group Interviews
- Positive Behaviour and demonstration of the school’s "4 Cares"
- Positive Attendance.
- Speech and Voting Process: Shortlisted students will deliver a brief, 60-second speech to Year 4 & 5 students and teachers, highlighting their qualities and reasons for wanting to be a captain.
- The speeches will be presented on Friday 22 November. Please note this process will only be for students and staff. If your child is absent on the day, they will still be included in the voting process.
- During the speeches, Year 4 & 5 students will be able to make notes and at the conclusion of the speeches students and teachers will vote for two male and two female candidates using Microsoft Forms.
- The final captaincy decisions will be made based on the voting process and the individual students’ pre-selected preferences.
- If any positions remain vacant, the school will select candidates based on the application process without holding additional speeches or voting.
Announcements:
- Students who receive a captaincy position will be notified during the Year 5 Awards ceremony. If your child is successful in attaining a position we will notify you, however we will not be disclosing the details of the position. Student leaders will be acknowleded formally in 2025.
Once again we are very proud of all applicants and we thank you for your support.
Attendance
A friendly reminder to check QParents for any unexplained absences for your child. We currently have a number of unexplained absences across the year level, and it’s important that we keep our records up to date. By logging into QParents, you can easily provide a reason for any absences, or feel free to contact the office for assistance.
Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.

Year 6 Graduation
Invitations and further details were emailed to all Year 6 families last week. We are looking forward to celebrating with you on Wednesday 4December in Gigum Hall.
We have received many enquiries from parents requesting additional tickets for family members. At this time, we are not able to provide additional tickets but are looking into being able to live stream the graduation so more members of your family can feel a part of the evening.

Year 6 Graduation Meeting
Our final meeting of the year will take place on Wednesday 20 November from 5.00 pm -6.00 pm in Wandani. At this meeting we will be discussing details including food, decorations, logistics and funds. If this is something that interests you, I encourage you to come along.
As this is our last graduation meeting I would like to thank the graduation committee for their work with organising the 2024 Year 6 Graduation. The funds raised from the committee have allowed the following to be purchased for the Year 6 graduation.
- DJ $300
- Balloons $600
- Decorations (yet to be confirmed)
- Photobooth $1400
- Red carpet $200
- Graduation gift $1494
- BBQ Costs $123
- Graduation certificate costs $77
- Cake $100 (approximate)
We are really proud that we have managed to keep costs down. This year’s yearbook is $6 cheaper than last years and the price of the food has remained the same despite rising costs. In our current climate we have tried where possible to keep costs to a minimum. If you are struggling financially and need some assistance with graduation costs, please reach out to me.
If you have any questions, please also direct these to me.

Complex and unfamiliar assessment tasks in Mathematics
At Mango Hill State School, mathematics reporting at an A level emphasises students’ ability to engage with complex, unfamiliar questions that require them to demonstrate a deep understanding of mathematical concepts. Since 2023, we have been committed to this approach, and it is evident that our students’ disposition toward challenging questions has significantly improved. In addition to solving straightforward problems, students are encouraged to apply their learning across diverse contexts, bridging classroom knowledge with real-world situations. This approach allows students to showcase their critical thinking and problem-solving skills in varied scenarios. By focusing on these comprehensive assessments, Mango Hill State School aims to develop confident, resilient learners equipped to apply mathematics beyond the classroom.
Accelerated Reader
This week we have seen so many AR readers borrowing and quizzing. Well done everyone as you race towards your goals!
Congratulations to Lachlan and Willow from Year 6 who have now finished AR. This means they have reached the highest level of AR 9.0. We are so very proud of them.

Congratulations also to Eloise who reached 4 million words! Well done Eloise for reading and quizzing all year to reach this extraordinary milestone!
Well done Lachlan, Willow and Eloise!
Borrowing from the Hub
We have now finished with our weekly Class visits to the Hub for borrowing. Students should now start to return all of their books. For those students on AR, they may continue to borrow this week. For any students who are striving to reach a specific goal, please talk to our Hub staff so we can support you to achieve this by the end of the term.
Don’t forget if your child has lost, misplaced or damaged their book, we ask that you replace this book. For AR books, we need the replacement books to be the exact title and author, as these are often difficult to source.
The Hub will continue to remain open every morning from 8.15am until 3pm each afternoon. See you soon with some returns!
Have a fantastic week

MHSS Year 3-6 Swimming Carnival
Later this term our MHSS Swimming Carnival for all Year 3-6 students will be held. Our goal is to ensure all students can participate in a variety of swimming races and have an enjoyable day with their peers.
Day 1: Students turning 10, 11 and 12 years old in 2024 (Born 2012, 2013 and 2014) will compete on the first day, which will be Thursday 28 November (week 9).
Day 2: Students in Years 3-4 who are turning 8 and 9 years old in 2024 (Born 2015 and 2016) compete on the second day, which will be Friday 29 November (week 9)
Students compete at sporting events, including at representative levels, in age groups, not in year levels. Therefore, our carnival days run to align with this process.
Below is the initial parent information for both days. Students will receive more information at school in the coming weeks. This will include a permission and race nomination form, which will need to be returned for your son/daughter to attend. There is no cost for parents associated with the swimming carnival days. This was funded by our wonderful P&C.
