World Teacher's Day
This Friday is World Teacher's Day. I take this opportunity to thank our teachers for all that they do for our students, colleagues and community. I attend many planning sessions, working alongside our teacher and I see their commitment to do whatever it takes to improve student learning, engagement and wellbeing. Teachers take on many roles; educators, cheer leaders, mediators, negotiators…They are prepared to do whatever it takes. At Mango Hill State School we are fortunate to have quality educators. Enjoy this special day teachers!
Australia’s largest child safety education and awareness day
What is Day for Daniel?
Friday 25 October 2024
Held annually on the last Friday of October, Day for Daniel honours the memory of Daniel Morcombe. Parents, carers, and educators are encouraged to start a conversation with children and young people about personal safety. Schools and early learning centres conduct child safety education activities. At Mango Hill State School, we revisit the 3 Rs of safety, Recognise, React, Report! These themes are also covered at times in the learning activities of our weekly Care Classes. On Friday 25 October, students are welcome to wear a red t-shirt or red accessory to support Day for Daniel (Please note, this is not a general free dress day – red shirts and accessories only). You can find resources to help you talk with children about Keeping Kids Safe at https://danielmorcombe.com.au/keeping-kids-safe-resources/
Students do not need to bring a gold coin donation as this is an awareness day at Mango Hill.

This week in Care Class we are going to focus on Care for Self and revisit the Ready Scale, our self-regulation tool. We will learn about child safety - Recognise, React and Report. This will help us to better understand when we feel unsafe and how to react in these situations (Daniel Morcombe Foundation).
Students will be allowed to wear a red t-shirt or red accessory, to support Day for Daniel. On Friday, we will be talking about our safe people, recognising our body signals when we are in an unsafe situation and how to react.

Tough Teeth Program - A message from the team
The Tough Teeth Program is a free dental health screening program that comes to your child’s school. Parents do not need to be present.
- We will take a very quick look in your child’s mouth for obvious signs of decay or other problems.
- We will apply a varnish which releases fluoride over time and protects teeth from decay.
- We provide your child with dental health education and toothbrushing instruction. They will receive a free toothbrush.
- This does not replace the need for children to have a full check up.
We will let you know what we find - we contact you via email/phone/SMS regarding urgent treatment needs.
- We can provide dental treatment for your child at our nearest clinic or dental van with no out-of-pocket costs if they are eligible. Otherwise, you can follow up with your regular dental practice.
- You may need to bring your child/children to dental appointments if further treatment is required.
Parents' consent forms will be sent out to complete via QR Code (preferable) or paper forms for you to complete and return by COB 30/10/24. If you use a QR code, we will receive it directly. If you complete the paper form, please return it to the school office to be picked up.
If your child is currently experiencing a toothache or you have a concern that you would like addressed sooner, please call 1300 300 850 for eligibility and to make an appointment.

Uniform Shop
New prep students - welcome! You may be thinking - what do I do now? - for your new prep uniforms. We encourage all new parents to book an appointment to fit and purchase your new uniforms. Appointments are 15 minutes long and ensure the time is spent with you and your child to get the right fit. Appointments for new prep students are running every Friday from Oct 25-Nov 8 and can be made at https://wearittomangohillss.simplybook.me/v2/
Please bring your child to their fitting so we can ensure they have the correct size. If you are concerned that your child will grow significantly over the Christmas break, we do offer an exchange service. If you purchase your uniform in term 4, and feel they have outgrown it in January, you can pop back in and exchange the items they have outgrown.
If you are unable to make these appointment times, you are still welcome to come into the store during our regular opening hours. We also have appointments available in January. We open two weeks before school returns. January can get quite hot and busy, so please consider making an appointment if this is your preferred time to avoid lengthy waits in line.
If you have any queries, our email is mangohill@wearitto.com.au or our shop phone number is 3482 8117. Our uniform shop convenors are Zoe and Rochelle.
Our regular hours during the term are as follows.
Mon 8am-10:30am
Wed 1:30pm-4pm
Thu 1:30pm-4pm
Fri 8am-10:30am
We also have a retail store located at 41 Kirby Road, Aspley. They operate regular retail hours and can be reached on 3263-5566.
We offer online orders. Orders can be placed through our website any time at www.wearitto.com.au/schools/mango-hill-state-school

Hats and water bottles
During the day, we like to make the most of all our learning areas including outside. Please ensure your child has named hat and water bottle at school each day so they can enjoy our beautiful outdoor spaces and be sun-safe. With the weather heating up, it is also important that our students wear their hats to and from school, as well as during the school day.
Bumping up our writing
As mentioned last week, Prep learners have been busy writing new events for a familiar story to entertain their reader. Prep K have been practising using a scale to bump up their work. They do this by highlighting in green what elements of the scale are included in a piece of writing then identifying what could be added to improve the piece of writing. It was so impressive how Prep K could work in pairs and small groups to identify how to bump up a piece of writing and then work together to create an improved piece – amazing stuff Preppies!

Celebrating Year 1
It is truly a pleasure to now be part of Mango Hill State School Community. I look forward to getting to know everyone.
When visiting classes today, I was very impressed with the level of respect and care students were giving to their teachers and to their learning. In every class students were engaged in learning and followed class routines.
I had conversations in 1C about money. Students were quickly able to answer my questions about what coins looked like and their value. They were very certain that even though 50c is the largest coin they would prefer a $1.00 coin even though it is smaller.
1M showed me how they work through their phonics lessons. This week learning about /u_e/ as in:
tube, flute, ute, cube
1O showed me how part of a Heggarty lesson and demonstrated being able to identify how many syllables there are in words and then spell those words.
It was so good to see them working with words such as: artistic and partnership.
Day for Daniel
Just one last reminder that this Friday 25 October we will acknowledge Day for Daniel. This is an opportunity as a school to discuss child safety awareness with our students. Please read Mrs. Padgett’s article about this event.

Narrative Writing in Year 2
This term in English, the students in Year 2 are exploring a range of picture books. They are using these books as a basis for writing their own narratives. They are focusing on creating stories that engage the reader by including a beginning, middle and an end with a dramatic complication or problem to be solved.
Telling stories is such an integral part of our daily lives as we recount events and experiences, and use these to entertain others. Many of the best stories have a series of events, and this unit provides students with an opportunity to use their imaginations to create some new events for familiar characters.
This unit of work also gives students lots of practise as they prepare for NAPLAN at the start of Year 3. Students are prastising generating ideas in a mind map, planning their narrative and then writing it just like they do in the NAPLAN writing test.
I was lucky enough to read some of the narratives written by the students in 2P. The children did a wonderful job engaging me as the reader by including noun and verb groups to add detail to the events as well as figurative language and dialogue to help paint a picture about how the characters in their stories were feeling.

We can’t wait to read everyone’s narratives at the end of the term.

Celebrating Year 3 Poetry: Crafting Language with Purpose
Earlier this week, I had the privilege of visiting several Year 3 classrooms, and I was truly impressed by the outstanding writing skills on display. This term, our students are delving into the world of poetry, with a focus on creating vivid imagery and evoking emotion in their readers. Their ability to carefully select language features that capture mood and atmosphere is nothing short of remarkable.
Students are skilfully incorporating literary devices such as noun and verb groups, personification, and rhythm to bring their poems to life. These choices not only paint pictures in the mind but also immerse the reader in the feelings and experiences they describe.
It’s always a joy to step into classrooms and witness the incredible learning happening every day. The creativity and thoughtfulness our students are showing in their writing is a testament to their hard work and the dedication of our teachers. Well done to all!
Care Focus of the Week: Noticing my feelings
Last Friday, we introduced our new focus of the week: Noticing My Feelings. This lesson built upon previous discussions about what makes us feel stressed. By helping students identify their feelings, we empower them to engage with strategies that can help them manage and regulate their emotions more effectively.
During the lesson, students explored how their bodies respond to different emotions, learning to recognize physical signs like a racing heart, tense muscles, or a change in breathing. They also discussed how to notice feelings in others, identifying cues such as a flushed face, sweating, or crying. Understanding these signs in themselves and their peers helps students offer support and empathy.
At home, you can reinforce these important skills by helping your child recognize and name their emotions. Encouraging them to build a personal toolkit of strategies—such as deep breathing, talking to someone, or taking a break—will support them in navigating a range of emotions with confidence. Together, we can create an environment where students feel supported, both at school and at home, in managing their emotional well-being.

Year 4 Camp
What an amazing experience last week was for our Year 4 students who attended camp. The purpose of camp was to support students to develop and practise their leadership skills, autonomy and teamwork. The camp spoke about the strengths of Bouncing Back, Respect and Achieving Goals in building the confidence of our students to lead. Our students rose to the occasion.
There were a range of amazing activities and experiences for the students on offer. When discussing camp highlights with students, laser tag and archery were the clear favourites!
I know the staff that attended were incredibly proud of the way the students conducted themselves at camp. It has been wonderful to hear from students and parents alike, and to receive so much positive feedback about their experience last week.
Number Facts
At MHSS we place a high value on students learning and knowing their number facts. Number facts are simple addition, subtraction, multiplication or division number sentences. They are the number sentences that students are expected to ‘just know’.
‘Just knowing’ these facts is not easy as there are so many to learn. Because of this, it is important that students have strategies for calculating simple number facts, while they learn and become more fluent with them. Therefore, we prioritise a strategy-focussed approach to learning number facts, whereby students have the opportunity to practise their facts through games and activities, but are also explicitly taught how to find an answer when they don’t know it.
Students practise their number facts regularly at school. Ask them to teach you a game they have learned and join in the fun!

Student Leadership
This is a friendly reminder that there is just over one week left for students to submit their 2025 Leadership Booklets, with the final deadline being no later than Friday 1st November. All students who wish to be considered for formal leadership roles in Year 6 to complete their booklets and submit them by this date.
As leadership positions are highly competitive, not all students will be able to receive a formal role. However, we want to remind all students that leadership is more than just a title. They can still lead by demonstrating a positive attitude, setting a good example, and contributing to the school community through their actions.
Academic Achievement
In the classroom, students have continued to show great progress in their writing, specifically in responding to moral dilemmas. This unit has focused on using concessional statements to present a variety of considered opinions, allowing students to explore different perspectives and provide thoughtful reasoning. Additionally, they have been working on using intensifiers to influence the modality of their writing, adding depth and nuance to their arguments.
Eureka Excursion – Payment Reminder
We’d also like to remind parents to finalise payments for the upcoming Eureka Excursion, scheduled for Monday 18 November and Wednesday 20 November. Please ensure that payments are made as soon as possible to confirm your child's participation in this excursion.

AFLQ Schools Cup State Finals
For the first time in MHSS history, MHSS Girls team competed at the State Finals for the AFLQ Schools Cup. This placed the team amongst the top 9 teams in the state for AFL. For a group of girls with very limited AFL playing experience this was a tremendous effort and something we are very proud of. The Girls team competed over two days at the Maroochydore Sports Complex.
The jump up in competition was very clear, with teams full of very talented players. MHSS also lost two of its key players prior to the competition so it was a very challenging event for our team.
MHSS results were:
- G1 – LOSS 41-0 vs Ryan Catholic College
- G2 – LOSS 52-0 vs Marymount SS
- G3 – LOSS 38-0 vs Mooloolaba SS
- G4 – LOSS 18-0 vs Westside Christian College
Four losses on day 1 meant an 8th vs 9th playoff game on Saturday with MHSS again playing Westside Christina College. The team had a fantastic game in a very gritty, determined performance but were again outclassed, going down 36-13.
Even though the girl’s team experienced losses, their sportsmanship, effort and determination never waivered and they upheld the MHSS team values extremely well.
A standout performer for MHSS was Omika, who prior to this year had never played AFL. She was awarded the MHSS Player of the Finals Series after some strong performances. Congratulations Omika!

Yr. 3-4 AFL Training Program
At Mango Hill State School, we have a program for students in Year 4-6 called the “AFLQ Schools Cup”. Each year a MHSS AFL boys and a girls’ team is selected with students completing training at school and then playing in the AFLQ Schools Cup competition throughout the year.
In Term 4 we will be running an optional afterschool 4-week training program for year 3 and 4 students to develop the skills (punting, handballing, marking….) as well as AFL game rules and awareness. We would like your son/daughter if in Year 3-4 to attend if they are interested.
Dates/Times: Tuesdays 3.00pm-4.00pm - 29 Oct, 5, 12, 19 Nov
Venue: MHSS Oval
Cost: Nil
Forms: If your son/daughter is interested, a permission form needs to be collected from Mr Hills in the PE Office and returned prior to the first session.
Activity Risk: This is a medium risk activity (risk assessment completed by Mango Hill State School staff). The program has been designed to teach skills and rules of AFL. There will be no tackling in all games and activities and instead a “touch” version will be played. Mouthguards are not compulsory for AFL training sessions but are recommended.
Equipment/Uniform: No equipment is required but it is advisable for students to wear a change of clothes if they like. Students can also provide their own protective equipment (mouthguards) and can wear football boots (no metal tags), but again this is optional. If they do not have football boots, normal shoes can be worn.
