A reminder this Friday is a Pupil Free Day at Mango Hill.
We have had another fantastic week.
We have another busy week with our Prep, Year 1, Year 3 and Year 4 families participating in stay and play, Fathers’ Day stall, School Tour for prospective parents and students, Year 2 Gelato incursion and selected senior students participating in debating.
Our sports teams had a cracker of a week last week. Our AFL girls team are through to the State Finals. Our boys team were knocked out during the semi-finals. Our year 5 soccer team won the Met North Competition for the first time in the history of our school. Our year 6 team came third. Although winning is nice, I’m more proud of how our students conducted themselves. They were humble and displayed great sportsmanship. This was highlighted when I spoke to a few of the AFL boys and they were telling me how good one of the other teams were and how this team deserved to win. It doesn’t get much better than this. A huge thank you to Mr Frisby, Mr Vlieg, Mr Smith, Mr Hills and Mr Newell. A special shout out to our PE team. The placings of our teams highlights that our students are exposed to great skills. A big thanks to our parents and friends for assisting our teams and supporting them along the way. For futhur information read our update in the sports section.
Book Week was celebrated in style. Our students and staff looked amazing. Thank you to our staff for always getting into the spirit. Thank you also to parents/caregivers for supporting your child to partake. Lastly thank you to Ms Holm, Ms Johnson and Ms Franklin for adding that special sparkle to the hub this week and for fostering a love of reading school wide.
Tomorrow our Years 4, 5 and 6 students commence a Water Safety Program. Please find the timetable below.
Swimming_Timetable_for_Water_Safe_Program.pdf
This week our P&C held their annual Fathers’ Day stall. Thanks again to our parent volunteers Erin W, Sarah C, Danica E, Kylie D, Diane G, Amanda V, Natasha C, Phoebe N, Sue T, Alanna I, Amy S, Dominique B, Melissa A, Ranya A. A special thank you to Melissa T for organising the entire event. It’s always such a success. Lastly thank you to our school community for supporting this event.
Speaking of P&Cs, our P&C has agreed to donate $35,000 to our school that assists towards additional books, resources for our music department, dance supplies, maths resources, student leader resources, HPE equipment, resources for our Italian program, instruments, student garden club resources, early phase classroom play equipment and lots more. They have also committed $10,000 towards our swimming program. This has helped bring down the price of swimming for our families. We are very appreciate of all that they do.
Monday was Active Travel to School Day. We spotted students walking, riding, scootering and busing to school. Once spotted, they received a ticket in the major draw to win a scooter and helmet. This will be drawn at our whole school Arts Parade on 12 September, 9am. There will be other surprise days where on the spot prizes will be provided. Actively travelling to school is great for our health, provides a wonderful movement break prior to coming to school and helps keep our roads flowing.
The Queensland Government partnered with Share the Dignity to install Dignity Vending Machines (DVMs) in all Queensland state schools. I’m pleased to inform our school community that we were successful in our submission and now have a Dignity Vending Machine (DVM) in one of the toilets in our senior section of the school for students to use. The Share the Dignity in Queensland schools initiative is proudly sponsored by the Queensland Government to help end period poverty. The partnership aims to foster positive educational outcomes and alleviate emotional distress for students in need, by allowing them to focus on their education rather than on accessing supplies to manage their period.
2025 School Planning
Its that time of the year again where we are starting to formulate 2025 classes.
If you have any matters you would like us to consider for your child’s class placement in 2025, please complete a Class Considerations Form and return to Petrina Ollard polla2@eq.edu.au by Friday 25 October, 2024. Late submissions will not be considered.
If your child will not be returning to MHSS in 2025, could you please let us know so we can ensure our staffing and resources are as accurate as possible.
The Respect Program - What is being taught?
The Respect program is a teaching and learning resource developed by the Department of Education as part of the Queensland Government’s commitment to address domestic and family violence.
The Respect program takes a developmental approach to content and delivery. Over the years of schooling from Prep through to Year 12, students will be exposed to age-appropriate learning opportunities that help them build respectful relationships, understand consent and the reporting of sexual assault. In Term 4 we will begin the Respect program from Prep - Year 6.
By implementing the Respect program, schools will give students opportunities for social and emotional learning in self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationships, ethics, values, social norms, stereotypes, human rights, risk and responsible decision-making. A growing body of evidence shows that social and emotional learning of this nature leads to:
- improved social and emotional skills, self-concept, bonding to school and classroom behaviour
- less disruptive classroom behaviour, aggression, bullying and delinquent acts
- reduced emotional distress such as depression, stress or social withdrawal.
Prep to Year 2
Students develop the capacity to understand and self-regulate their emotions in ways that account for their feelings and the feelings of others. They also develop skills to initiate social interactions.
The content explores the people who are important to these young students and develops their capacity to initiate and maintain respectful relationships in different contexts, including at school, at home and in the classroom. Students explore their own sense of self and the factors that contribute to and influence their identities. They learn about emotions and how to enhance their interactions with others as they grow older, including seeking, giving and denying permission (consent).
Years 3 to 6
The Respect program's focus broadens to include the knowledge, understanding and skills required to support students' wellbeing and that of their family and friends. Personal and social skills take on an increasing importance as they look to family, peers and the community for role models. Students begin to explore personal and social factors that support and contribute to their identities, and assist in the management of emotional responses in a range of situations over time. Students develop knowledge, understanding and skills that help them build and maintain respectful relationships, including seeking, giving and denying permission (consent).
Father's Day
A huge Happy Father's Day to all of our wonderful Dads. Enjoy your day!

This week in Care Class we will focus on Care for Learning by identifying our strengths and our challenges. A strength is a positive character trait, skill or talent. Knowing your strengths can help you to better understand, identify and build on your abilities which can be a more positive way of viewing and improving yourself. You may feel a connection to some strengths over others. Which three of the following would be your strengths?
We are also going to focus on the school value of Commitment which is giving tasks a go and not giving up. When we are showing commitment, we are striving to achieve through persistence and determination.

Book week
Thank you for joining us on Friday last week for our book week parade. It was wonderful to see everyone getting into the spirit and celebrating reading.
Student free day Friday
This week will have an extra special close on Thursday with the Fathers’ Day stay and play from 1.30pm. We look forward to seeing our visitors there and thank you to all the fathers and father figures for everything you do, we wish you a wonderful day on Sunday.
Ready Breaks
Each day across our school we use ‘ready breaks’ to help us maintain focus and regulate our bodies and minds. We often do this as a whole class, giving our bodies ‘energy up’ or ‘energy down’ breaks that helps us regulate. Energy up breaks get us up and moving and energy down breaks are calming, quieter breaks. Our Prep learners have regular check-ins before learning and playtime using the ‘ready scale’ and determine what sort of ready break is needed. We are so proud of the way our Preppies can identify how they are feeling and use strategies to help them get ready for learning and play.

Speaking and Listening
We are well into our speaking and listening unit of work, to end our term in English. We are creating an e-book (multi-modal presentation) and sharing thoughts with our friends. We are going to discuss how fictional animal characters are like humans, using the “Willy” books by Anthony Browne.
We need to be able to…
- Understand how characters in texts are developed and give reasons for personal preferences
- Create a short presentation about a familiar topic (the book and characters we’ve read about), using our e-book to guide our oral presentation
- Interact in a small group discussion, showing how we can wait for other speakers and use appropriate body language when responding.
- Listen to others when taking part in conversations
We’re pretty fabulous in Year 1 at sharing our opinions. We have a lot of them! And we always seem to be right… and never wrong?
In this unit of work, we need to be able to share the limelight, take turns, and respond appropriately when others are speaking. This means, we are actively listening and asking questions or responding on topic.
You can help your child by modelling the turn taking in conversation, in your daily life at home. At the dinner table, take turns at sharing about a topic and then asking an appropriate, on-topic follow up question to show you are listening. Encourage your child to ask an on-topic question of you.
We’re not born being excellent conversationalists! It’s all about the practice.
The past week has been super busy in Year 1 Land with Book Week celebrations on Friday and our Special Person Celebrations for Father’s Day this week. Whew! We are working hard to be regulated throughout the day and to try our very best. You can help us by ensuring we go to bed early each night… we are very tired.

Celebrating Special Events in Year 2
There have been so many wonderful events to celebrate in Year 2 over the past week!
Book Week Parade
Last Friday we had our annual Book Week parade. This year’s theme was Reading is Magic. A group of senior students presented at our parade sharing the ways books and reading are magical. We also had a chance to dress up as our favourite book characters and parade in the hall. Here are some of the Year 2s all dressed up in their costumes.

Special Persons Stay and Play
It was so lovely to spend time with loved ones at our Special Persons Stay and Play afternoons last week. There was lots of time for puzzles, reading, construction and craft. We hope all our love ones enjoy their special day on Sunday!

Stay and Play - A special morning for our loved ones
We are excited to remind you that this week marks our second family Stay and Play event! Tomorrow morning, we warmly invite all dads, grandfathers, and other special family members to join us for a fun-filled morning of activities designed to engage both children and their loved ones.
This is a wonderful opportunity to spend quality time with your child, explore their learning environment, and participate in hands-on activities that they love. Whether it’s a game of handball, getting creative with art supplies, or enjoying our photo board, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.
We encourage you to come along, connect with other families, and experience firsthand the joy and excitement that your child brings to school each day. Your presence not only enriches your child’s experience but also strengthens our school community.
We look forward to seeing you there and sharing this special time together.
Year 2 & 3 Instrumental Music recruitment concert
Amazing work from our instrumental team performing earlier this week for our Year 2 and 3 students. Our students were engaged and amazed by the instruments on show. Forms were sent home last week to students in Year 2 and Year 3. If your child is interested in learning an instrument and joining the instrumental music program in 2025, please fill in the survey by scanning the QR code on the form.

Science in Year 4
This term, students are developing an understanding of the properties of a range of materials. They have been conducting investigations to test their predications and using their knowledge of materials to suggest explanations. They have been using scientific language to describe the observable properties of materials - such as paper, plastic, fabric, paper towel, wool, foil, baking paper and a range of biodegradable materials - explaining how they can be used.
Water Safety Reminder Weeks 8 and 9
Please make sure permission and payments have been finalised through QParents for the Week 8/9 Water Safety Program. As all water activities are classified as ‘high risk’ students will not be able to attend without permission and payments received.
Swimming schedules were emailed on Friday 16 August.

Academic Achievement
This week in English students have continued their work in creating a moment-in-time description from a character’s point of view.
This has included studying the characters point of view in a variety of poems including ‘Mulga Bill’s Bicycle’ and ‘The Man From Snowy River’ by Banjo Paterson, and ‘Regeneration’ by Henry Vaughan.
Students are working towards
- creating a consistent mood that matches the character’s point of view with clear links to a poem
- selecting precise noun and verb groups, with figurative language to build tension
- including an ending with hope or suspense
- adding a summary of feelings
Water Safety Reminder Weeks 8 and 9

Learning in 6R and 6M
During the week, I visited 6R and 6M to observe their learning in the current Maths unit: Order of Operations. In both classes, students were being challenged to solve problems by following the order of operations. This concept can be tricky when we are so used to working from left to right!
In 6R, some students were writing number sentences to match word problems, using the order of operations. It was great to see the deep level of thinking occurring in both classrooms as they solved these problems together.
High School transitions
Some of our students have already begun their high school transitions and orientations for 2025. If you are yet to enrol your child into a high school for 2025, now is the time to act. If you require support with doing this, please let us know. The sooner this decision is made, the more settled the transition is for students.
Graduation fundraising
Thank you to everyone who has contacted me in regards to supporting with the Year 6 Graduation fundraising efforts at Arts Fest. If you can help out on the night with selling food at the BBQ, it’s not too late! Please contact me at bxmil3@eq.edu.au
I am still seeking more donations of cartons of soft drinks and/or water. If you are willing and able, please drop any donations to the office under my name. Otherwise, please come down to the Arts Fest next Thursday to support our fundraising efforts. Buy a sausage sizzle or burger, bid on the silent auction and buy a raffle ticket for your chance to win some amazing prizes! Don’t forget to put a bid in for the class art pieces too. There are some spectacular creations on offer!
Your generosity is greatly appreciated by myself, the Graduation Committee and our Year 6 students!

Thank you to all those who have entered our 2024 Book Week Competition. Voting has now opened, so pop on down to the Hub to vote for your favourite entry! Voting will take place all week – but only one vote per person. Once voting closes at the end of this week we will tally the votes and announce the winners next week.
Book Fair
Special thanks to all of the families who supported this year’s Book Fair. We raised almost $2000 for the Hub, which we will use to purchase lots of new books for our general collection.
Accelerated Reader
Congratulations to Raizel who last week completed AR. This is an extraordinary achievement and is a result of Raizel’s commitment to reading. Well done Raizel!
Congratulations also to Luke who reached his goal of reading one million words! This is a lot of words for a Year 3 student so it was with much excitement that we added Luke’s photo to our special Millionaire display. Well done Luke!
Have a fantastic week

AFLQ School’s Cup - Boys
Last week Mango Hill State School once again participated in the AFLQ School’s Cup SEQ Primary Finals. Along with Banksia Beach SS, Mango Hill represented our region, taking on the best teams from all over South-East Queensland including; Villanova College, St Joseph’s Nudge College, Banksia Beach SS, Padua College, Yeronga SS, Ferny Grove SS and Weller’s Hill SS.
A slow start in the Pool rounds meant that our team had to go through the elimination finals. With a fantastic and well-contested win against Ferny Grove SS before taking on our local rivals Banksia beach in the Semi-Final round.
Unfortunately, after a very spirited effort by all players we were defeated in the dying seconds of the game. This was disappointing for the team after leading throughout the match. The outcome however places us in the top 5 teams in South-East Queensland, a great outcome!!
AFLQ Schools Cup SEQ Finals
The MHSS AFL teams last week competed at the AFLQ Schools Cup SEQ Finals. This day comprised the winners of each regional AFLQ Schools cup competition day so both teams were going to be up against some of the best schools in South East Queensland.
For the girls this was their 2nd attempt at this level of competition. Great commitment at training had the girls excited and raring to go to represent team Mango.
Pool game results were:
- G1 – WIN 16-0 vs Norman park SS
- G2 – WIN 6-4 vs Ferny Grove SS
- G3 – WIN 7-1 vs Macgregor SS
3 wins from 3 meant the girls progressed straight to the Quarter Finals. A match up against Cooperoo SS, who finished 2nd in their pool. The girls played a wonderful game against a strong team. The team secured an easy victory in the end 20-1.
The final game, a win and they were for the first time in MHSS history off to the State Finals. A loss and they bow out of the competition. The game was against Ferny Grove SS, who they had narrowly beaten earlier. The game was tense and tight the entire way through. At the end of full time, a 6 -6 draw. This led to extra time. With both teams unable to score, the game went to triple extra time before MHSS kicked the winning point, taking the nail-biting game 7-6.
STATE FINALS HERE WE COME! What a great victory and a great day for the girl’s team. All of the girls performed extremely well as a team, and we are very proud of their efforts.
Go team Mango!!
Metropolitan North Regional Track & Field Results
MHSS has a huge representation at the Metropolitan North Track & Field Trials last week. Representing the Pine Rivers District, 14 MHSS athletes competed in events including running, high jump, long jump, discus, shot put and team relays.
Individual Highlights
For students to be competing at this level is a great experience and all students should be extremely proud to compete. We would like to celebrate some great individual achievements from the carnival as well. The following students were able to place high enough in their events to be selected in the Metropolitan North Track & Field Team. These students will now compete at the Queensland School Sport Track & Field Trials later this term;
10yr Girls
- Eden F – Discus 2nd
- Pania P – Shot Put 2nd
10yr Boys

11yr Boys

A special mention must also be made for Lian N. As he did at the Pine River Trial, Lian has broken records at the Metropolitan North Track & Field trials. A first for a MHSS student! Lian is now the proud owner of the 10yr Boys Discus and Shot Put records. In Discus Lian comfortably beat his opposition by nearly 10m and threw an incredible 36.35m. He did the same in Shot Put, sending out an 11.00m throw to take the win and the new Met North record. Well done Lian!!!
