It’s hard to believe we have less than 4 weeks until the end of Term 3. Our staff have been busy ensuring students are receiving feedback for the final ‘stretch’ in their learning before the end of term.
This week we have welcomed colleagues from our CFN cluster schools (Jinibara, Narangba Valley, Caboolture East, Moreton Downs and Burpengary) to view our school’s approach to visible learning with a particular focus on how we provide feedback to students. By the end of the week, we will have had approximately 60 educators viewing our practice and providing feedback on things we are doing well and our possible next steps. We really value their feedback and thank our teachers for opening their classrooms doors and being so willing to share their craft with others.
A reminder that Friday 30 August, students do not attend school in lieu of a student free day.
We have another action-packed week at school. This week we celebrate Book Week and a love of reading. As an educator, I consider teaching students to read, one of the most important jobs as learning to read can open up so many opportunities! Last week I had the pleasure of witnessing a student ‘cracking the code of reading’ for the first time. I wish I had filmed this event as the student’s pride, excitement and joy was truly overwhelming for those of us that were there. Needless to say, there were a few tears shed as those present knew how significant this moment was.
This week our Year 2 students are holding a special person’s afternoon. Next week year 1's are holding a Stay and Play. We also have selected year 5 and year 6 students attend a public speaking competition. Big thanks to Ms Kelly Koch for organising this event and supporting our students. We also have some students representing our school at the Met North Track and Field trial. We wish these students the best of luck.
Next week our P&C will be holding their annual Fathers’ Day stall on Monday 26 and Tuesday 27 August. We encourage families to support this event by purchasing a gift if you are able to. A big thank you to our P&C, especially to Melissa T for her coordination of this event.
Introducing the Respect Program: A New Health Unit for Term 4
In Term 4 Health, our students will explore the Respect Program. This program, developed by the Department of Education as part of the Australian Curriculum, is a primary prevention initiative that emphasises developing and maintaining respectful relationships, self-respect, and gender equality.
The Respect Program is integrated into the Health and Physical Education (HPE) curriculum and is structured according to HPE bands (Prep, Year 1-2, Year 3-4 and Year 5-6). Throughout the year, students will explore three key topics.
- Personal and Social Awareness
- Respectful Interactions
- Protective Behaviours
Students will engage in age-appropriate activities such as discussions, storytelling, and role-play to deepen their understanding of these important topics.
For more information about Respectful Relationships Education, please visit the Respectful Relationships Education Hub – Parents and Carers page https://learningplace.eq.edu.au/cx/resources/file/a0ba1327-a69e-474d-a220-acfff7542960/1/parents/parents.html
This program will replace Catching on Early.
Student safety is everyone’s business
The school has recently had the school crossings painted as they were becoming slippery and faded. Our crossing's now stand out and are hard to miss. We ask that ALL students use these crossings when entering our school. Some students are being dropped off and are still getting out of cars and running across the road. Although this is on school grounds, our roads are busy and some drivers may be inattentive. Please use our Drop and Go zones and do not allow your child to exit the car in alternate areas. Should you wish to park and walk your child in, please use the parking zone. If we all do the right thing, traffic flows and student safety is maintained.
Active School Travel
Have you remembered to be active on your way to and from school? Sometime soon, we will be out and about again with our raffle tickets, catching our active travellers in the act of being active!
We want to see as many students walking, riding, scootering, running, skipping or catching public transport to school.
We have a scooter to raffle to our active travellers. You’ve got to be active, to be in it, to win it!
Parent Teacher Interviews
Parent Teacher Interviews will be held over a four-week window including the last two weeks of Term 3 and the first two weeks of Term 4. Each teacher will choose dates and times depending on when they are ready to share assessment results and other information.
Please book interview times via https://eq.sobs.com.au/pt3/parent.php?schoolid=70371
Bookings for Parent Teacher Interviews will open on Friday 23 August and close Friday 30 August.
We strongly encourage our parents/caregivers to make a time to meet with your child’s class teacher. The focus of these interviews is to share how your child is progressing in the key areas of social and emotional wellbeing, English and Maths, and to discuss their next steps in learning.
Please see below for instructions on how to book if you have not booked through SOBS before.

This week in Care Class we will focus on Care for Learning by identifying our strengths and our challenges. A strength is a positive character trait, skill or talent. Knowing your strengths can help you to better understand, identify and build on your abilities which can be a more positive way of viewing and improving yourself. You may feel a connection to some strengths over others. Which three of the following would be your strengths?
Arts Fest is fast approaching and we can’t wait! We’re finalising our auction pieces and prettying up our individual art pieces. Did you know that during Arts Fest, we turn Wandani into a real-life art gallery? We will hang 1646 individual pieces of art.
We will all have the chance to enjoy the experience of walking through our art gallery too. During Week 9, each class will visit the gallery. On Thursday afternoon and evening, September 5, our families will have the opportunity to join the Arts Fun! 4.30 pm – 7 pm.
Wandani Arts Fest 2024 Highlights:
- Seeing our Wandani Art Gallery – it is pretty spectacular when you see all of our amazing art in the one place. We’d love you to visit. This year, we’re accepting donations at the door, either coins or via a square. All money collected at our 2024 Arts Fest, goes towards Arts Fest in 2025!
- Activities for families to enjoy together – including decoration station, STEM activities, Maker Space, cartooning, henna and mandala art. Parents will supervise their own children at each activity. We’d love for you to enjoy them together as our Team Mango community.
- Henna and Mandala Art! Our wonderful parents volunteer their time to Henna us. Parents need to accompany their child on the night to give permission and we ask for a $5.00 donation per design. Looking to connect with other parents? We’d love more volunteers! Please email Vaishali at vthak0@eq.edu.au to volunteer.
- Food, food, food! You can pre-order a pizza through QKR. Orders for pizza will close a couple of days out from Arts Fest. Collect the pizza from our canteen at 5.30 pm. Our Year 6 families will run a bbq and bake sale on the night too, to support the Year 6 graduation.
- Fairy Floss, Popcorn, Snowcones! Thanks to Ray White North Lakes for sponsoring the hire of these machines for us, and helping us to serve on the night. Special mention to our Helping Hands friends who are helping us too! $7.00 to purchase each of these treats.
- Raffle Action! Our friends from Ray White at North Lakes have donated some incredible prizes, to support our Arts Fest. Tickets are 1 for $3.00 or 2 for $5.00. There’s an electric scooter, a mystery prize and a $1000 Nintendo Switch OLED pack to win.
Did you know you can already purchase tickets via QKR!
We anticipate that the tickets will be popular so to avoid the lines we encourage families to pre-purchase.
And of course, our class piece auctions are the real highlight. Buddy classes have worked together to produce some incredible pieces of art – and you can bid on the night to take these home. We will have a real auctioneer to help with the bids.
We can’t wait to share our arts love with our Team Mango families. If you’ve been before, you know the event is a “vibe”. We’d love to see you!
Location, location, location
As mentioned earlier in the term, our Prep learners have been using positional language to describe the location of objects. They are now using this language when giving directions to peers to find their way from one place to another and are starting to explain why a path might be chosen. You can support this learning by talking with your child about different routes you take in your daily lives. For example, we are going this way to school today because it’s the quickest, it avoids the traffic or because the other road is closed today.
Book week
On Friday 23 August we will have our first book week parade. The theme of this year is Reading is Magic. Our Parade will run from 9:10am-9.40am in Gigum Hall. Students can dress up as their favourite book characters. Please ensure your child’s costume includes sun safe clothing (not sleeveless) and appropriate footwear is worn. We also look forward to having our Lady Gowrie Kindy and playgroup friends with us for this special occasion. We hope to see you there!
Fathers’ Day Stay and Play
Special loved ones are invited along to our upcoming Stay and Play afternoon next week on Thursday 29 August from 1.30-2.15pm to celebrate Father’s Day. Your class teachers will share more details closer to the time. Please note the following day Friday 30 August is a student free day.

What is time?
Our Year 1 friends are working to understand time. Time is such an abstract concept! But so important in day to day life. “What time is it?” (Showtime! – If you know Hamilton the musical, you’ll get that lame joke). “How much longer until we get there?” (Said on many a car trip, I’m sure). “Hurry up! We have to get to school. We will be late!”
What’s “late?” What’s “early?” How long is an hour? Is an hour a short time, or a long time? What’s a second? Is a second a long time or a short time? Kinda depends, really. A second is a long time in a 50m Olympic swimming race. A second is a short time, when we are asking our child to wait for us. An hour is a long time, to be cleaning your teeth. But it’s a short time, to go out to dinner.
We are challenging ourselves to learn o’clock and half past, as well as lengths of time. You can help us at home by:
- Having a large analogue clock, easily seen by us
- Using time words frequently, with explanation
- Using timers, so we understand the “length” of time
- Giving us the opportunity to tell the time ourselves
Have a lovely week.

Exploring Multiplication and Division
The children in Year 2 have started to develop their understanding of multiplication and division by exploring ways to group and share collections. They are learning how to multiply and divide so that they can solve a range of problems.
There are three different ways of modelling multiplication:
- Set model eg. There were 4 teams with 5 people in each team
- Length or linear model eg. There were 3 skipping ropes each 2m long
- Array model eg. There were 4 rows of chairs with 6 chairs in each row.
It is important that students model and explain multiplication involving all three types of situations in order to develop a full understanding of the concept. By being familiar with all three models, students will learn to recognise multiplication situations because they understand the language and can represent their thinking using pictures and diagrams.
Check out these children from 2M who are have been using different models to represent multiplication situations. They have been learning about how multiplication and addition are related. Multiplication can sometimes be referred to as repeated addition. Numbers can be multiplied together for example 3 x 4 = 12. This same sum can be represented using repeated addition 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 12
Year 2 Gelato Incursion
Our Year 2 students are so excited about our upcoming Gelato incursion that will take place on Thursday, 29th of August. Please ensure you’ve organised consent for your child and made payment through the school office so that your child can participate.

Learning in Year 3
In Year 3, our Mango Mathematicians have been diving into the world of fractions, a key concept in their mathematical development. To help them grasp these often-tricky ideas, we've been using a variety of hands-on materials that make learning both fun and meaningful.
Using objects like fraction circles, number lines, and everyday items like slices of pizza or pieces of fruit, students have been able to see and feel the parts that make up a whole. This tactile approach helps them understand fractions not just as abstract numbers, but as real, tangible parts of their world.
Students have been splitting up objects to explore halves, quarters, and eighths, which ties directly into real-life situations like sharing snacks equally with friends or dividing ingredients for a recipe. By connecting fractions to everyday experiences, students are better able to understand how these mathematical concepts are used in the real world.
As our Year 3 students continue to build their skills in fractions, we encourage parents to look for opportunities at home to link fractions to daily life. Whether it's cooking together, sharing toys, or dividing chores, these real-life applications can make learning fractions a fun and relevant experience for your child.
Every Day at Mango Hill Matters!
Making the most of the mornings is essential for our students’ success. Research shows that students are often most productive in the early hours of the day. In Year 3, we start our mornings with Morning Meetings, where we set the tone for the day and establish clear expectations.
If your child is facing any challenges that prevent them from attending school or arriving on time, please don’t hesitate to reach out to their class teacher. We’re here to support every student in making the most of their day.

Learning in Maths
Over the past week in Maths, our Year 4 students have finished their Fractions unit and have begun their Decimals unit. Students have been collaborating to identify the links between their understanding of fractions and their new learning about decimals. The Year 4 teachers have set up lots of engaging opportunities for students to explore this new concept and show what they know.
Book Week
We love Reading!!! On Friday, we are celebrating Book Week with our year level parade in Gigum Hall starting at 11:45 am. Reminder to students to dress as a favourite character from a book. Lots of students bring the book with them, but you can also take a colour copy of the book cover if the book is precious. All parents are welcome to attend the parade and see us as we honour books.
Stay and Play
On Thursday August 29 our Year 4 classes are hosting a Stay and Play from 8:30-9:00 am. You will receive further information from your child’s class teacher, so please keep an eye out for this.

Hello Year 5 parents and carers.
I can’t believe we are at the end of Week 7!
Academic Achievement
It was great to see students from Mango Hill State Secondary College along with High School Science teachers visiting the Year 5s this week to conduct a number of science experiments.
Some of the experiments include the following.
- Chemical Reaction (Soda / Mentos)
- Non-combustible $5 Note
- Hydrochloric / Acid Magnesium
- Water Pressure Creating a Seal
This visit helped create a level of excitement about science in high school, while also giving the high school students an opportunity to part their knowledge and experience. The visit helped give the Mango Hill State School students the opportunity to follow instructions and to pose questions for investigation. It helped students to gain an understanding of safety and how to ensure accuracy of their observations. Thank you Mango Hill State High School teachers and students, for taking the time to come and see our students.
Water Safety Reminder Week's 8 and 9
Please make sure permission and payments have been finalised through QParents for the Week 8/9 Water Safety Program. As all water activities are classified as ‘high risk’ students will not be able to attend without permission and payments received.
Swimming schedules were emailed on Friday 16 August. If you have not received this information, please search your inbox for Water Safety Program and also check your junkGreg McCallum

Digital tools enhancing learning in the classroom
Recently, our Year 6 teachers have had a focus on how they can enhance learning opportunities in their classroom using the digital tools we have available. Through using iPads and the Learning Management Systems provided by The Department, our Year 6 students are able to create, communicate, collaborate and be captivated by their learning.
In 6E this week, Miss Dixon used iPads and One Note to support student collaboration to solve Maths problems. In 6D, Mrs Drummond used Keynote on iPads for students to create instructional videos, explaining how they solved problems using the order of operations.
We are lucky to have staff who support our students’ digital capabilities in an increasingly digital world!
Walking into a welcoming environment
Each morning, I walk through the Year 6 corridors to check-in on students and their classes. What is wonderful to see each day, is the welcoming environment that our teachers set-up for students as they individually welcome each student through the door and provide consistent and predictable routines for them to follow as they enter the classroom. Both of these things set our students up for a calm and positive day!
Graduation fundraising
Last week I put a call out for some local artists to donate their artworks to the Year 6 Silent Auction to be held at the Arts Fest in Week 9. The money raised will go towards the Year 6 graduation. Thank you so much to those who have reached out. We still have a couple of spots available for anyone else who wishes to donate. Please email me directly at bxmil3@eq.edu.au before Friday 25th August if you would like to donate.
A huge shout-out to Helping Hands for their support of our Year 6 Graduation fundraising efforts. They are kindly supplying the food for our BBQ! Thank you also to the many people who have offered to donate baked goods for sale at the Arts Fest. Your support is greatly appreciated!
I am now seeking donations of cartons of soft drinks and/or water. If you are willing and able, please drop any donations to the office under my name. Your generosity is greatly appreciated by myself, the Graduation Committee and our Year 6 students!

This week is such a special week to celebrate all things books. Not only is it a great opportunity to dress up – have a look at the fabulous photo of the library staff in some of their costumes celebrating books – but it is a great time to re-engage with books. Have a read of the attached article and make time this week to
get your nose in a book!
Don’t forget that entries for the Book Week Competition are due in this Friday. We look forward to receiving lots more entries, and next week we will open the voting. All students will be welcome to visit the Hub and vote for their favourite entry.
Thank you to all those who visited our Book Fair and purchased a book or a special stationery item. We are so grateful for your generosity, as a percentage of all sales goes to our Scholastic fund, meaning we can purchase lots of new books for the school.
The Premier’s Reading Challenge closes this week so all forms should now be sent into the Hub.
Accelerated Reader (AR)
Congratulations to Eloise who last week reached her goal of reading 2 million words. We are very proud of Eloise and have added her photo to our special display! Well done Eloise!
Have a fantastic week
