Dear Team Mango,
It was lovely returning to school on Tuesday to so many students going out of their way to welcome me back. I feel well rested and am excited to return to work. I was fortunate enough to spend five weeks with my husband and my two children exploring parts of the world we have never been to. We completely disconnected and were lucky to spend this time together. One of these places was Italy. I was instructed by Ms Verster to send lots of photos to our Italian teaching team so they could share these with our students. It was perfect timing as our Year 3 students are learning about fruit and veggies in a traditional Italian market so I was sure to hunt one down!

Thank you to Mr McCallum for taking on the role of principal during my absence. Thank you also to the extended senior leadership team for their support of Mr McCallum.
By now all parents/carers should have received their child’s Semester 1 report card. Reach out to your child’s class teacher if you have not received this. Please also make a time to meet with your child’s teacher should you want any further information about the progress of your child. The school also commenced celebrating students’ outstanding achievements and efforts through our Awards Ceremonies with more to come in the following weeks. Congratulations to all students who are being acknowledged. You should feel very proud. Due to feedback received from parents/carers over the past year, we are currently reviewing our awards and associated criteria. Further information will follow throughout the term.
Our camps are well and truly in full swing. From what I’ve heard, students are having an incredible time and are coping well with testing their growing independence. I’d like to thank our staff who have and will be attending camp. Our teaching staff volunteer their time, away from their loved ones, to make this time special for our students. Please join with me by thanking our camp staff.
Tomorrow our staff will take time out to thank our support staff. Our support staff comprise of teacher aides, office staff, groundsmen, cleaners, IT technicians and student wellbeing officer. Our support staff take on a myriad of roles and contribute greatly to our students and staff. I’d like to acknowledge the work they do and thank them for their ongoing contribution to our school and our students.
We have commenced our 2025 Prep interviews and are holding a pre-prep session on Friday 26 July. Please see flyer below for further information. Should you be intending on enrolling your child in 2025, please contact the school as soon as possible. We find the longer our pre-preppies are engaged and connected with our pre-prep events, the better they settle in.
Term 3 has seen some new faces join Team Mango. Please join me in welcoming the following staff. Taylor Oughton- Year 3 Inclusive Learning Teacher, Rachael Beard- 6J teacher Monday, Tuesday and Friday and Michelle Jackson- 6R teacher.
By now you should have all received an email to invite you to participate in this year’s School Opinion Survey (SOS) and provide opinions about our school. SOS is a confidential survey. We really value your feedback and encourage you to make the time to complete the survey as it will provide valuable to feedback to our school. Once our school receives the SOS report it will be analysed for areas of strength and areas where improvement is needed. The survey will be available until Friday 16 August 2024 and should take less than ten minutes to complete.
Our students enjoy being able to go to the canteen at second break and buy snacks to enjoy. Our canteen still accepts cash from students but we have started to notice many students bringing along very large notes to use to buy snacks from the canteen. At our school the general rule at the canteen is that students are only allowed to buy snacks for themselves. To ensure the safety of all students we are asking that students do not bring a cash note larger than a $10 note to the canteen.
This week in Care Class we will be focusing on Care for Self. We will explore the Ready Scale which is a tool that can help us better manage our feelings and emotions. When we are able to identify our feelings, we are then able to use strategies to make ourselves feel better again and get back into our learning. We want students to be ready … for the world, for play, for sport, for dancing, for life!
We will also focus on our school value of commitment - striving to achieve through persistence and determination. We can show this by being willing to give our time and energy to our learning.
Save the Date-Arts Fest

100 Days of Prep!
On Thursday last week our Prep learners celebrated 100 days of Prep. In that time there has been so much growth and our Prep friends are well on their way with reading, writing, using numbers and problem solving numbers. They have also developed the social skills needed to play and learn together. The Prep teachers celebrated the day in style and enjoyed sharing this proud day with the children.
Vision screening
Registration is now closed and thank you for a wonderful response with 85% of our cohort engaging in this opportunity. Vision screeners will commence at school on 22 July.
Playgroup
Last week our Playgroup friends enjoyed some NAIDOC week activities. Playgroup is from 8:45 am-9:30 am in the Prep Undercover area on Fridays. All welcome.

Year 1 Awards Ceremony
What a wonderful celebration of excellence on Monday morning for our Year 1 awards ceremony.
I was especially impressed by the manners and behaviour of all of our Year 1 students who were not award recipients. They demonstrated such grace, cheering on their friends and showing such excitement when their friend’s names were read out!
We can’t always win the prize and there’s loads of times we miss out. To be able to show such support for others, was delightful to witness.
Well done to our Team Mango families for helping our young friends learn what team spirit is all about. Our Year 1s certainly demonstrated Care for Others on Monday. I was so proud of them!
Have a lovely week

Speaking and Listening in Year 2
The children have started their learning in English this term by engaging in a Speaking and Listening unit. In this unit, the students are viewing and listening to a variety of everyday procedural texts. Procedural texts list a sequence of actions or steps needed to make or do something. Typical examples of procedural texts include recipes, science experiments, assembly manuals or instructions for playing games.
In this term’s Speaking and Listening unit, the students are learning to create their own procedures for how to pack a suitcase to go on holidays. Instead of writing a procedure for how to do this themselves, the students are writing a procedure to tell an imaginary character what to pack for a holiday. They are presenting their procedure on their iPads as a multimodal presentation. A multimodal presentation uses two or more communication modes. Students will use a combination of printed text, images and spoken text to present.
Next week, the children will be sharing their multimodal presentations with their peers. Not only will they practise their speaking, they will also have an opportunity to practise active listening by providing each presenter with feedback.

Awards Ceremony
Our Awards Ceremony is on Friday 19 July, starting at 8:45 am. You will have received an email invitation if your child is receiving an award. Of course, all parents are welcome to attend. If your child asks why they didn’t receive an award, encourage them to set a goal of achieving an award in Semester 2. The Principal’s award which recognises effort, behaviour and uniform is a great one to aim for.
Please ensure you are wearing the correct formal uniform, including black shoes. If your child has P.E. on Friday, they may like to wear their sports uniform.
Safety in the Year 3 Block
We have had some incidents recently involving students running in the corridors past the Year 3 buildings, after breaks and when the morning bell rings. May I please remind students that you need to walk in these areas. This is to ensure that we do not have any accidents occur which could cause injury.
Learning in Mathematics
This term in mathematics Year 3 is busy learning about multiplication and division. Year 3 teachers have been working to expose our students to complex and unfamiliar inquiry tasks which they work through across the week. This allows students to apply their surface level mathematical thinking to more complex problems. When talking with the Year 3 students, many of them expressed how much they enjoy learning in mathematics. I visited many rooms this week during their maths lessons and all students were engaged and attempting the difficult questions.

Learning in Year 4
This term in Maths, Year 4 are learning all about fractions! Today I visited 4O while they were representing fractions in different ways - number lines, collections, diagrams, word form and some students have even being challenged to convert between improper fractions and mixed numbers! What a talented group of mathematicians we have in Year 4! Ways you can help support at home are recognising fractions while cooking, walking around and spotting fractions in the environment and even talking about distances while driving. It would be great to discuss equivalent fractions too - for example, while cooking if you don't have a one cup measurement tool, how many quarter cups could you use?
Year 4 Awards Ceremony
Congratulations to all Year 4 students who received an award at our Awards Ceremony this morning. How fabulous for those students to enjoy the acknowledgement of the peers on all their special efforts. It was wonderful to have so many parents and friends attend too. I encourage every Year 4 student to strive for an award this semester.

Camp
We have had a great start to the first Year 5 camp with students and teachers having a great time. Thank you to parents for getting your children ready and to school in time for the buses. Your help is greatly appreciated.
Students have done a great job at showing Care for Self and Care for Others.
Camp B: 23 July - 26 July (Classes 5B, 5C, 5R, 5V )
Meet at Gigum Hall at 7 am on Tuesday 23 July. Allow extra time to hand in medication.
Bus to depart at 7:30 am sharp. Bus returns to the school on Friday 26 July, due to arrive at 1:45 pm. Please pack warm clothes for the cool mornings and evening activities.
Please enjoy some photos below so far of Camp A.

Academic Achievement
Last week you would have received the Semester 1 report cards. It was fantastic to see positive result across the year level. Most of all I was impressed with the positive effort and behaviour marks across the cohort.
Congratulations to students who received Principal Excellence Awards, Academic Achievement Awards and Deputy Principal Awards.
For the students who did not receive an award in Semester 1, keep up the positive effort and continue to strive to do your best in Semester 2.
English
Over the past 2 weeks teachers have been working hard to ensure students have an understanding of the big picture in English.
Students have been studying a variety of poems including ‘Shape Poems’. Shape poems use a number of features to create mood and help the reader's understanding of a topic. This can include what it looks like, sounds like or feels like.

Deputy Principal- Year 5

Slam Poetry
Our Year 6 students are beginning Term 3 creating and delivering a Slam Poem as a part of their Speaking and Listening task. I enjoyed visiting some classes this week and seeing some very dramatic performances from our Year 6 teachers, who were modelling some exceptional presenting skills to their students!
While visiting 6W, I was able to see them developing emotive language that could be used linked to specific topics for their slam poems. They worked collaboratively to share some very deep insights.
This unit is always a favourite of mine. I can’t wait to see some Slam Poetry presented in a couple of weeks!

Camp
6W, 6R, 6K and 6G all had a fantastic time at camp last week. I arrived on Thursday and was blown away by the change I had seen in many of the students, as they were challenged to learn about themselves and how they can demonstrate independence and leadership. I had a wonderful time on Thursday, bushwalking, exploring the wildlife park, Kayaking and looking for crabs with 6R.
I can’t wait for the adventures I will have over the next couple of days with Group 2!
Awards Ceremony
The Year 6 awards ceremony will not be held until Week 5 (Monday 5 August) due to camp at the beginning of the term. I look forward to celebrating the remarkable achievements of our Year 6 students during Semester 1 at this time.
Graduation Fundraising
Thank you to everyone who has offered support for the Year 6 Graduation by donating gifts on behalf of their business for the Arts Fest raffles. Some wonderful prizes have been donated. Thank you also to our Graduation Committee who have been working behind the scenes seeking support from a range of local businesses, who have also provided some incredible prizes!
In a few weeks, I will be seeking volunteer support from Year 6 families for cooking the BBQ, selling drinks and baking for our bake sale at the Arts Fest on Thursday 5 September. Please keep this evening free so that you can support!
