As we are in the middle of week 7, students are entering the formal assessment phase of the school term. Although our teachers do their very best to set students up for success and to support students by making this time as least stressful as possible, this time can often cause increased anxiety which may result in dysregulation in students. There are a few things you can do to assist your child with this time of the year, including:
- Regular routines
- Calm, settled mornings
- Be on time
- Enough sleep
- Eating regular, healthy meals
- Work, rest and play
- Movement breaks
- There will be stress, but don’t get stressed about it
On top of this, winter can cause us to feel a little ‘blue’. Encourage your child to talk about their feelings and should you find your child is feeling a little stressed, reach out to your child’s class teacher.
National Sorry Day, Sunday 26 May 2024, remembers and acknowledges the mistreatment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who were forcibly removed from their families and communities (The Stolen Generation). This week is National Reconciliation Week. It is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia. The theme for this year is, NOW MORE THAN EVER.
On Monday our Senior Concert Band and Senior Strings will attend Mango Hill State Secondary College to attend the Instrumental Fanfare. I’m trusting they will all have a fabulous time.
Next week we will be holding our Music Gala Night on Wednesday 5 June. I know our students are excited to be performing to an audience and to their parents. Thank you to our students for all the work they have put into this concert and thank you to Emma Nicolopoulos, Alena Bogdan, Judy Luke, Erin Blyth, Janet Almond and Claire Morrell.
On Thursday 6 June selected students will be attending the AFLQ School’s Cup Regional Day. I wish them the best of luck. Thank you to Nick Hills, David Vlieg, Josh Frisby and Lisa Johnstone. I know our students will play well but also show sportsmanship towards the umpires and opposing teams.
There has been a change to policy that impacts on how schools organise excursions. Moving forward, should parents’ consent to their child attending an excursion, consent will be required within two weeks of receiving the notification. To avoid any child missing out, please complete this on time via QParents (for those not on QParents please see us about signing up or to alternatively return a paper copy of consent). QParents is a much easier option to do this. Invoices for payment will be sent after consent closes.
Congratulations to our junior and senior dance eisteddfod teams who have just finished their eisteddfod season.
Ms Kostoglou, Miss Sheehan and the students have worked hard all year and have come away with the following outstanding results.
Sunshine Coast Dance Eisteddfod
Junior Jazz 1st
Senior Jazz 3rd
Senior Lyrical 2nd
BPAC Dance Eisteddfod
Junior Jazz 1st
Senior Jazz 2nd
Senior Lyrical 2nd
A big thank you goes out to Ms Kostoglou and Miss Sheehan for all of the hard work and dedication they have put into these teams of talented dancers. Thank you to the students who worked so hard and showed true Team Mango spirit and lastly, to the parents for helping our students get to school early, dressed, ready to go and who go along to the eisteddfod to support the students.
Ms Kostoglou, Miss Sheehan and many of the students now focus their time and energy on to the Wakakirri which is coming up in Term 3. We can’t wait to see what they have for this year’s performance.

This week we celebrate Italian Language week. There have been many fun Italian themed activities happening around the school for the students to enjoy. A big thank you goes out to our wonderful Italian teachers, Shona McEvoy, Theresa Verster and Alicia Victor.
This week in Care Class we will be focusing on Care for Others by developing an understanding of character strengths in others. We will learn to identify and name these. We will also appreciate diverse perspectives and be curious, not judgemental. When we Care for Others we appreciate everyone and respect difference in others, we embrace diversity and we demonstrate kindness.
National Reconciliation Week is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.

Prep – Italian
This week Prep learners have been celebrating Italian Week. Prep students have been learning all about Italy through a unit called “Andiamo in Italia!” They have been discovering iconic Italian buildings, Italian food, vehicles and the Italian flag. They have learned new songs, played games and created artwork of The Leaning Tower of Pisa. Great work Ms McEvoy and all our Preppies!

Early intervention – pathways to support
Here at school, we work in partnership with families to develop adjustments so all our learners can access school and reach their potential. In addition to this, early intervention services can help children develop skills and help increase their independence. Early intervention is reported to be an effective way to support young learners to develop in areas of identified difficulty, rather than trying to catch up further down the track. The Benevolent Society offers pathways to supports that may be of interest to any parents and carers of children aged 0-6 years that have a developmental delay or disability. For more information call 1300 003 234 or visit the website to access a referral form. No formal diagnosis is required.
https://www.benevolent.org.au/services-and-programs/early-childhood-years/child-development
If you have any concerns about your child’s social or academic progress, you can reach out to your GP, check out information on the website above and of course reach out to us.

Exploring Halves
We’ve been exploring halves in Year 1 over the past few weeks.
What makes a half?
A half is an equal part. A whole is broken into two equal parts. One of these parts is a half.
If the parts aren’t equal, then it’s not a half!
Some things are more easily halved than other things.
I can eat half a pizza or half a sausage roll. I can paint half a house.
Some irregular shapes cannot be easily halved, and in real life, some things are difficult to halve, for example halving a delicate flower would be tricky!
We can halve collections too. When we halve a collection, we have to use our one to one correspondence to count the collection and then to work out half the collection.
See if you can solve this puzzle!
Leo has 14 rocks. Ben has 10 cars. Both of them think they each have half a collection. How could this be true?
Have fun showing your working! Hint: use blocks or counters to help you.
Have a lovely week

This term our Student Welfare Officer, Tegan O’Connor has been running weekly social and emotional learning sessions with all of the classes in Year 2. During her visits, Miss Tegan has focused on teaching the children about gratitude, empathy, mindfulness and what it means to be resilient.
Gratitude is all about paying attention to the things and moments we have right now, and not worrying about what we don’t have. We practise gratitude by noticing the positives that exist around us, and by being thankful for things, places and people in our lives.
Empathy, kindness and compassion are closely linked. To be empathetic is to put ourselves in the shoes of others to feel and see what they are. We practise this by being kind towards other people.
Being mindful help us to be present in the moment and often create a feeling of calm. We practise this through slowing down and concentrating on one thing at a time. This includes meditation and colouring in.
Resilience is the ability to recover or adjust easily from difficulties. We prastice this through being self-aware, having a growth mindset, demonstrating confidence and being motivated and adaptable.
Thank you Miss Tegan for all your hard work teaching us this term.
This week we are celebrating Italian culture all across the school with Italian Week. In Year 2 the students have been busy learning all about the seasons and the clothes we wear for the different types of weather conditions. The children have been using their Italian language skills to play games, sing songs and create a poster with Italian labels.
Check out this great learning for the students in 2P.

Diary Writing
This week our students are beginning to construct their diary writing assessment, writing from the perspective of a character in Charlotte's Web.
This task provides our students an opportunity to demonstrate the skills they have been learning across the term. One big element in this process is feedback! At Team Mango we use three feedback colours to help students understand feedback from a teacher, peer or themselves. Green highlights our writing celebrations, pink our challenges and blue our next steps. I love going in to rooms seeing this feedback cycle continually evolve, where students 'Bump Up' their work. This feedback is linked to our learning goals from individual student scales.
Keep up the great writing team, I can't wait to see the finished copies!

Technology in Year 4
This week, I had the pleasure of visiting 4S during their Technology lesson. It was great to hear students use technical language and draw detailed diagrams to describe how data is transferred between apps and devices. Students were discussing the process of Air Dropping and also sharing documents via Showbie.
It was also great to see students creating KeyNote presentations, using a range of functions to communicate information about Mango Hill State School. Be sure to ask your child to have a look at their presentations!
Writing in Year 4
I also had the opportunity, along with members of the Leadership Team, to have a conversation with students from 4A, 4B, 4P and 4M about their learning. We asked students how they're going with their learning and what their next steps are for their writing. It was great to hear students talking about using the Bump It Up walls for resources and identifying their next steps for improvement. It was great to see the growth mindset of the students as they celebrated what they were doing well and considered what they could do to continue to improve.

Wellbeing
A reminder with the Year 5 Camp and sporting excursions coming up, students need to be upholding the school values and our four Cares. It is important that all students are representing our school in a safe and respectful manner.
If your child is having difficulties with self / co- regulation, please talk to the classroom teacher so we can work together to have successful behavioural outcomes.
Camp Reminder
A reminder that camp payments are due on Friday 14 June 2024.
Academic Achievement
In Mathematics our Year 5 teachers have been helping students apply mathematics to real world problems. These complex questions are a great way of getting students to work collaboratively, to use estimation and to think about the reasonableness of answers.

Learning in Year 6
I recently visited 6D during a lesson on identifying emotive and evaluative language in a text. Mrs Drummond delivered an engaging lesson that begun with unpacking the difference between ‘emotive’ and ‘evaluative’ language, before allowing students an opportunity to find examples in a student constructed text.
Mrs Drummond is one of our digital teacher champions, and always finds fun and innovative ways to analyse student learning. In this lesson, Mrs Drummond set-up a quiz using Microsoft Forms for her class. They accessed the quiz via a simple QR code and then completed the quiz which provided them with instant feedback on their results. Mrs Drummond was then able to see how effective the lesson was, straight away. As expected, student learning was of a high standard.
Well done to 6D and Mrs Drummond!

Transitions to secondary
In the next few weeks, all Year 6 parents will receive a survey, requesting information regarding your child’s high school for 2025. This information is important for us so that we can support their new schools to ensure a smooth transition. Please keep an eye out for this survey and if you have any problems with accessing or completing it, let us know.
Graduation
Tonight we have our 2nd graduation committee meeting. All parents of current year 6 parents are welcome to attend. We will be meeting from 5:00 pm in the Wandani centre.
Camp
Camp is fast approaching with payment due Friday 14 June 2024. If you have any questions about camp, payment or your child’s attendance at camp in general, please email me on bxmil3@eq.edu.au .

Accelerated Reader
Congratulations to all of those students who continue to read and quiz, as they strive towards their AR goals. We are so proud of your efforts.
This week we have had two of our students finish AR. This means they have reached AR 9.0 – the very top of the levels. Congratulations to Samuel and Nicola who have been working hard to reach this goal.
We look forward to seeing which books they will read now, although they might need a mini-rest first! Well done Nicola and Samuel!

Reading in other places
While many of the regular visitors to the Hub know how much Ms Holm loves to read, you may not know that I also love to travel. At the end of this week I will be off on an adventure to Cambodia. I am looking forward to working with some local families, playgroups and schools but also hoping there will be plenty of time for visiting the sites, resting and reading!
See you all in Term 3!
Have a fantastic week
