Community News

Can you believe we are already half way through Week 6? Time is flying. Thank you to all students, families and staff who walked, scootered, caught the bus, rode and even skated to school on Friday. Wow, what a busy morning. The students were excited about meeting Phinny and Sandy and the on-the-spot prizes were a bonus for a great morning. Where possible, we encourage students to travel to school by walking, riding or catching the bus. The active options promote great health benefits and catching the bus reduces congestion, hence a stress free drop off in the mornings and afternoons. Our council has worked really hard to improve the infrastructure to allow families to do this safely. Thank you to our Moreton Bay City Council for sponsoring this event and working as partners with our school. Look out for more active school travel events coming your way!
This week we have lots of exciting excursions. The Year 4 students are attending Australia Zoo and our Preps are heading to Lake Eden. I know our students will wear our school colours with pride by displaying our 5 values and 4 school cares (Care for Self, Care for the Environment, Care forLearning and Care for Others).
The next Yarn and Eats will be held on Thursday 30 May. We encourage attendance. Although these sessions are fun for our students and families, they also provide a great way to connect with each other and the school as well as an apportunity to provide the school with feedback on what we are doing in this space and how we can improve.
Lockdown
We have had to postpone the lockdown planned for last week. A lockdown now be held on Friday 31 May 2024, so once again, if you hear the alarms, please don’t panic.
P&C Day
As this Friday is P&C Day I’d like to extend my appreciation to our P&C members that volunteer their time to raise money and hold community events for our school. I’d especially like to thank Amy S, Mel T and Radhika R for all the extras they do on a daily basis.
Stop, Drop and Go
If you are intending to stop, drop and go, please ensure you are using the stop, drop and go area. Some parents have been attempting to drop students off in the parking lane. This is unsafe. Our number one priority is student safety so please don’t attempt to do this as you will be asked to moved on. Although the stop, drop and go line may look long, the traffic moves very quickly. It is the fastest way to drop children off.
Pick up
Please ensure children are picked up from school by 3 pm. We offer light supervision until 3 pm however if your child hasn’t been picked up by 3 pm, we ask that you enrol them in Helping Hands to ensure their safety. Thank you for your anticipated understanding.

This week in Care Class we will be focusing on Care for Self by developing an understanding of the concept of personal character strengths. We will learn to identify and name our own personal character strengths. Every person has character strengths or assets that are important pathways to building resilience and wellbeing. By knowing and understanding our strengths and making choices that are aligned with those strengths, we create more opportunities for positive emotions, social connectedness and wellbeing in our lives. Some people are creative, some people are brave, some people are adventurous and some people are all of those things. What personal character strengths does your child have? What strengths do you have?
Eco Marine Warriors
Eco Marines is an environmental group who meet every Wednesday at first break where students from Years 4-6 come together and talk about how we can help our school and community take care of our environment and live more sustainably. This term our goals are to continue to decrease landfill with our containers for change collection in every classroom and recycling as many empty coffee cups and lids with the support of 7/11 cups in the piazza. Please make sure you recycle your coffee cups and lids in the appropriate containers located in front of the Sole Cafe and the Canteen or bring your reusable cups.
Canteen Reminder
Parents please remember our canteen is a very busy place and orders need to be placed via Qkr! by 8:00 am to ensure lunches go out on time.
If you have some free time and can be of assistance in the canteen please pop to the canteen and have a chat to the staff or email mhsspccanteen@gmail.com

Lake Eden
This week, Prep friends and volunteers enjoyed our first school excursion to Lake Eden. This was an exciting event and with lizards, ducks and turtles making an appearance! This will make for some great 4-star writing opportunities back in class as the children share their ideas with others about the visit. It has been exciting hearing about the day. Thank you to our teachers, volunteers and Prep students for making this a wonderful experience.

Making Time for… The Outdoors
Nudgee Beach was such a winning excursion! We loved it! Did you go again with your child over the weekend? I encourage you to go if you have not done so.
Exploring nature is a great way to help develop regulation - for us and the kids!
Being outdoors is automatically less stimulating and less of a sensory environment than being indoors. It’s amazing what the lack of four walls can do! Trees, grass, sky, using our senses to explore the outdoors; all of this helps our brain.
And then, we’re ready to learn on Monday!
Where will you go this weekend to get your “outdoors time”?
Have a lovely week

Diving into Three-Digit Numbers
The Year 2s have been starting a new unit of work in Maths learning all about three-digit numbers. They’ve been practising counting forwards and backwards from 1000 and learning all about place value.
Place value means the value of each digit in a number. For example, the 3 in 853 represents 3 ones while the 5 represents 5 tens and the 8 represents 8 hundreds. It is important that children understand that whilst a digit can be the same, its value depends on where it is in the number.
Children’s understanding of place value is strengthened when they have lots of opportunities to represent numbers using a range of different materials. When students manipulate these materials they start to understand the value of each place in a number.
Check out the students in 2L representing three-digit numbers in lots of different ways.

Ways you can help at home…
- Practise counting aloud every day. Practise counting forwards, then backwards and then from any given number.
- Practise counting large collections. Encourage your child to use efficient counting by grouping objects into groups of a hundred or ten and then adding on the remaining ones.
- Practise reading three-digit numbers when you are out and about. Price tags, house numbers, signs … They’re everywhere!

Spelling Bee Superstars
Congratulations to our super star spellers in Year 3. On Friday last week our students in 3K celebrated their spelling bee win in style. The class held a pizza party for raising the most money across Years 3-6. A big thank you to our P&C and Miss Benfer for the work in getting the spelling bee up and running in 2024. Our students thought it was un-bee-lievable!

Italian in Year 3
This term our Year 3 students have been interacting and communicating in Italian during game play. In Week 5 our students have been learning to play a new game called Bocci. This engaging game has provided great opportunity to practise using words in Italian. Our students are so bravissimo (excellent).

Australia Zoo
All of our Year 4 classes have been attending Australia Zoo this week. The visit to the zoo is aligned with their current Science unit where students are investigating food chains and food webs. It also aligns with our current HASS unit where students investigate different environments, considering how perspectives shape how we use and care for them. Our students have returned in the afternoon sharing lots of exciting stories about their experiences. Thank you also to the parent volunteers who have attended to support their child’s class.

Mid-Year Concert
In Week 9, Year 4 will perform their Mid-Year concert. I have been lucky enough to observe the dances coming together and they look amazing! You won’t want to miss out on seeing them! During Week 8, classes will have an extra rehearsal to practise their routine in preparation for the concert. I can’t wait to see their performances

Wellbeing / Attendance
Thank you to all the parents who updated student absences during the week. There was a significant response and I appreciate you working alongside the school to improve attendance.
If you require support to increase your child’s attendance, please contact the class teacher or the office.
Academic Achievement
This week students have been working hard to bump up their diary entries. Students have been studying a variety of texts to understand how authors use evaluative language to create ‘mood’ in their writing.
When writing a series of diary entries students have been focussing on maintaining a common theme and how they can use cohesive devices to make strong links in their writing.
All students spend time receiving feedback from their teachers, highlighting their areas of achievement in green and their next steps in blue. When talking to your children please spend some time asking about the amazing work they have been creating.

Learning in Year 6
Last Thursday I enjoyed visiting half of our Year 6 classrooms for our Learning Walks and Talks. Each term, every class in the school is visited by the Principal, two other members of the leadership team, and two or three more teachers. The purpose of these Learning Walks and Talks is to talk with students and get an understanding of how clear they are about what they are learning. To do this, our discussion with students is guided by the following questions:
- What are you learning about and why?
- How are you going?
- How do you do know?
- What can you do to improve?
- Where can you go to for help?
Our teachers think about how students will answer these questions in all of their lessons, leading to consistently high-impact teaching. I was particularly impressed with how well our Year 6 students can talk about what they can do to improve, linking it back to the feedback that their teacher gives them on a regular basis.
I’m always amazed by the quality teaching and learning on display when going on Learning Walks and Talks at our school!
Graduation
Thank you to our Graduation Committee who met for the first time last Wednesday night. It was a productive meeting with decisions already being locked in. We are excited to plan an exciting celebration for the class of 2024! Keep an ear out for upcoming opportunities in Term 3 to volunteer to help raise money for graduation. A special thanks to Helping Hands who have already volunteered time and resources to contribute to a wonderful night!
