We’ve had another fine week at Mango Hill State School. This week, in conjunction with the Moreton Bay City Council, we launch our Active School Travel initiative. This Friday we encourage all families to walk, ride, scooter or catch the bus to school to ease congestion on our roads. Taking the active mode of transport is such a great way to model healthy choices to our students. This Friday, there will be on the spot prizes as well as a major prize up for grabs at the end of the year. All you have to do is take part in one of these forms of transport.
As the weather is becoming colder, especially mornings, please ensure your child has a Mango Hill State School jumper or jacket. Should you require assistance with this please reach out and send an email to jbenf10@eq.edu.au
Last week our P&C held their annual Mother’s Day stall. Events like this require a lot of planning and hard work as our school has many moving pieces. A huge thank you to Melissa T for doing a lot of the ‘behind the scenes’ work. Thank you also to: Sue T, Kylie R, Lena K, Sheetal R, Andrietta S, Chantelle B, Jalpa, Yuri L, Meaghan B, Amanda V, Jess C, Sharlinee P, Natasha C, Carla M, Rashi S, Radhika R, Alannah C, as well as two staff members from Helping Hands, Paige and Livvy. Special thanks to Sue T, Natasha C, Kylie R and Lena K who assisted with packing the bags and Robert K for his help with promotional work. Thank you also to our school community for supporting this event. I saw first-hand the pride and excitement our students displayed being able to purchase something special for their Mums or significant others.
Our school is continuing its collaboration with the Critical Friends Network (CFN). In 2022 this network won a State Showcase Award for the work the cluster is leading. The six schools include: Mango Hill State School, Narangba Valley State School, Moreton Downs State School, Burpengary State School, Caboolture East State School and Jinibara State School. This week Narangba Valley State School hosted a school visit consisting of principals, middle leaders and teachers exploring the school’s approach to visible learning. I always enjoy these visits as they provide our school with acknowledgement of knowing we are doing the right work as well as the opportunity to learn from other schools and educators.
Lockdown
As part of Education Queensland's policies and procedures we will be holding a lockdown drill on Friday 17 May 2024. These drills allow us to prepare for an unlikely emergency should it arise. On Friday 17 May, you may hear our lockdown alarm but please do not be alarmed as this is only a drill.

This week in Care Class we will be focusing on Care for Self by being regulated and knowing what it looks like to be regulated. Self-regulation is managing tension from environmental stressors and the ability to return to a calm state.
It is important to be able to identify how you feel and use strategies to self-regulate. Throughout the day your feelings might fluctuate, and it is okay to be at different points on the Ready Scale. What matters is being able to identify how you feel and use strategies to self-regulate.
Active School Travel
Team Mango is excited to be one the first schools to launch the City of Moreton Bay (Council) Active School Travel (AST) initiative. This initiative is part of Council’s Accessible Schools Program (ASP). You would have seen a number of infrastructure changes and upgrades happening around our school recently, including new supervised crossings at Kinsellas Road East and Bonnet Parade, new footpaths, and a number of safety improvements such as pedestrian fencing at Opal Street and signs and line marking changes in surrounding residential areas to better manage parking behaviour during school peaks.
Now it’s time for the next phase: the Active School Travel (AST) initiative.
What’s the Aim?
The goal is to see more students walking, riding or using public transport to and from school. Get to know our local community, meet other Team Mango families and have a healthy start and end to the school day by walking, riding or using public transport!
The map below, shows walking routes to use. Our Council is partnering with us to give prizes to students we see walking, riding or using public transport. These prizes will be given at random. Who knows when the prize givers will turn up! There are also raffle tickets to go in the draw to win one of four scooters at the end of the year.

So - the more you walk or ride, the more tickets you get for the raffle. Check out the other prizes you might get too!
To help us monitor the success of the AST initiative, it will be appreciated if you can tell us how you currently travelling to school by completing a very short four question survey by clicking on the link or using the QR code below.

Calling all parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and community members. We are urgently looking for more crossing supervisors to help our students and families get across the road before and after school safely.
This is a paid job and hours of paid work would be 7:45 am- 8:45 am and 2:30 pm- 3:15 pm. Days are flexible.
If you are interested in joining our team please pop into the school office and collect an application pack or email BSM@mangohillss.eq.edu.au
Please note that you must have or be willing to obtain a Blue Card and complete a Criminal History check.

Half Way Through
It is hard to believe we are half way through Term 2 already. Our Prep learners continue to delight us with their effort, ideas and ways of sharing ideas and working together. This week, some of our Prep learners enjoyed talking to visiting teachers from our school about their learning and the steps they can take to improve or ‘bump up’ their work. These ‘Learning Walks and Talks’ are a great way for us to get an insight into learner's understanding along with understanding of the impact of our teaching. You can take a look at the ‘Bump it up walls’ in your child’s class if you would like to find out more about the learning going on in English this term and the steps children can make to improve their work. Here’s an example and of a Bump it up wall so far. Please note these will change over time as the children are ready for new ideas to be introduced and explored.
Attendance
I am excited to be seeing so many of our Prep friends here at school each and every day. Every day at school counts as this means our learners are experiencing key learning experiences and also having lots of opportunity to connect with their teachers and each other. If your child is unwell, please keep them at home until they are well enough to attend. If your child is well, please make sure they are at school on time so they don't miss out on their morning routines that set them up for the day. If you need any advice or assistance around school attendance, please reach out to see what support we can offer.

Such a big week in Year 1 Land!
This week, we’ve explored Nudgee Beach. Nudgee Beach is one of my favourite places in Brisbane to take kids for a weekend adventure. It’s fairly local and there’s so much to do and see. Mangroves, crabs, fish, birds, the ocean… and horses too, if you’re lucky to spot them swimming in the ocean.
Our students have loved being outdoors with friends and learning all about the Nudgee Beach animal habitats. Maybe you could go again one weekend and have your Year 1 show you around? It would be such a wonderful speaking and listening opportunity to experience together. They’d be the “expert”, sharing the knowledge that they’ve learned with you.

Our Mother’s Day and Special People Stay and Play afternoons were so special. We loved playing with our loved ones! We also thoroughly enjoyed attending the Mother’s Day stall and choosing something delightful to gift our loved ones. Huge thanks to our P&C and parent volunteers for helping us to choose!

Have a lovely week

Learning About Self-Regulation in Care Class
This term in Care Class all across the school we are learning all about our bodies and self-regulation. Self-regulation is the ability to control and mange feelings and emotions.
We have been exploring what stress is and how it might feel in our bodies. Students sorted cards to show how the body feels when it is relaxed versus when it is stressed. They pinpointed on their own bodies where they feel stress and have identified triggers in their life that make them feel stress. Take a look at this great work from the students in 2L.

While talking about stress, we’ve also been talking about strategies we can use to calm our body down. Students have decided on as a class msome strategies they can use to help them be centred so that they are ‘Ready to Learn’.
Ways you can help at home…
- Consider naming and noticing how your body is feeling across the day. ‘I’m just going to take a moment to notice how my body is feeling. My heart is beating normally. My body is still. I’m feeling calm today.’
- Use strategic questioning to support your child to name and notice how they are feeling across the day. This could be particularly powerful when unpacking conflict situations. ‘What was going on for you when you were angry? What were you feeling in your body in that moment? How is your body feeling now that we’ve talked and solved this problem together?’
We are looking forward to continuing our work in this space across the term so that we have the language to talk about how our body is feeling in different states.
Mother’s Day Stay and Play
The Year 2s have loved having their special loved ones join them for our Special Person’s Stay and Plays. It has been great getting into classrooms and seeing these special people be pampered and showered with love. Check out these great photos from the 2R celebrations.

Rehearsing Regulation
This week in Care Class we have been continuing our learning on regulation. Earlier this term we identified how our body feels when stressed, and some stresses or worries we have. This week, our students have identified what happens to their body when they feel regulated. What does this look like? What does this feel like? We also revisited strategies that we can use to help regulate our body, that links to Care for Self. This is big work, but equally as important for our students to be the best they can be. Each day across the week, our discussions around regulation continue in our morning meeting. Students openly share their strategies and build the knowledge of their peers. Do you know what strategy your child uses to help regulate?

Maths in Year 4!
It has been great visiting Year 4 classrooms while they have been classifying angles. Angles are everywhere and our students have been working hard on classifying angles in relation to a right angle. They are using mathematical language such as acute, obtuse, right angles and also the language of perpendicular, 90 degrees and vertex. To support your child at home, you could go on an 'angle hunt' searching for angles in the real world and describing the angles they find.

Being Safe Online
This week, our Year 4 students participated in a presentation by the Queensland Police around engaging safely online. Many of our students are regularly engaging online with peers and others through games, messages and social media. We highly recommend parents continuing to monitor their children's use of their devices and how they interact with them. For helpful resources for parents regarding online safety, check out the eSafety commissioner website: https://www.esafety.gov.au/parents and further resources on https://www.thinkuknow.org.au/resources-tab/parents-and-carers.

Wellbeing / Attendance
As we reach the mid-point of Term 2, it is a timely reminder to check the attendance rate of your children. Student’s attendance rate can be viewed in QParents.
As you can see in the example below, low attendance can add up very quickly. While it is very easy for a student to have 6 days off due to illness, vacations or appointments, the attendance rate in this example has already dropped 91%. If this continues through the year this will equate to missing approximately two weeks of learning.
If your child’s attendance rate is under 85% please make an appointment with your class teacher or contact the office so we can put in the appropriate supports to assist.
Research shows that in Queensland, higher student attendance is associated with higher student achievement. Additionally, attending school every day helps children to build social and emotional skills such as communication, teamwork and resilience.
Year 5 Camp
Thank you for your patience while we have been finalising camp details.
We are excited to inform parents and students that Year 5 camp will consist of a range of fun and exciting activities. Some of these activities are classified as high risk activities and require parental permission and for the camp to follow specific guidelines as outlined by Education Queensland. High risk activities include all water activities such as pool games, body boarding and fishing. Other high risk activities include rock climbing (artificial walls), archery and a giant swing.
Camp is a great opportunity for students to challenge themselves in a controlled environment and gives children an opportunity to shine. I can’t wait to attend.

Learning in Year 6
This past week, I’ve had the pleasure of spending quality time in lots of Year 6 classrooms including 6E, 6G and 6W.
I visited 6E twice, once during a writing lesson and once during a Maths lesson. In their Maths lesson, students were practising location fractions, improper fractions and mixed numbers on an open number line. I enjoyed hearing students share their reasoning as they answered a range of challenging questions. During their writing lesson, students were tasked with creating a 4 Star paragraph that followed the TEER structure (Topic sentence; Explain; Elaborate; Re-state). Students in 6E had the opportunity to compare exemplars and determine which was better and why, using their scales.
Students in 6W were also writing quality paragraphs using the TEER structure. They worked in groups to write a paragraph that followed the TEER structure and included complex sentences that embedded quotes from the text to support their reason. Mr White always gives 6W great challenges to ensure students are 4 Star writers!
Similarly, students in 6G were also working on writing and creating 4-star TEER paragraphs. However, their focus was around using a range of text connectives. Mrs Thomas challenged 6G to choose from a range of provided sentences starters, to improve a given paragraph. It was great to see students thinking carefully to make deliberate choices about the connectives they were selecting.

Uniforms
The weather is cooling and more students are coming to school in jumpers. The majority of our Year 6 students have been coming to school in a Mango Hill State School jacket or jumper. If you need support getting a school jumper or jacket for your child, please contact me on bxmil3@eq.edu.au .
Camp
Camp notes will be coming out very soon. We can confirm that classes will be attending on the following dates.
Term 3 Week 1 (8-12 July): 6R, 6G, 6K, 6W
Term 3 Week 2 (15-19 July): 6B, 6J, 6C, 6M
Term 3 Week 3 (22 – 26 July): 6D and 6E
Being safe online
Last week we held a parent cybersafety information session, delivered by representatives from QLD police and Microsoft using the ThinkUknow program. The presentation was informative and left those in attendance feeling well equipped with how to keep their children safe when using technology. Creating artworks in Term 2
This term, all of our students will be provided with opportunities to develop their understandings of The Arts, with a particular focus on Visual Arts. Visual Arts is one of the strands from The Arts Curriculum, providing students with a chance to use their senses as well as develop their imaginations and creativity. Students will be able to express their ideas in different ways from Prep to Year 6, with each year level focussing on a different element of art. These include line, colour, texture and perspective. Some students will create sculptures and some will create drawings or paintings. All of these art works will be displayed at our annual Wandani Arts Fest held in Term 3. We can’t wait to see what everyone can create!
Premier’s Reading Challenge
The PRC for 2024 has now started, but there is plenty of time to read, read and read some more! The PRC runs this year from 7 May until 23 August. The record form is attached here or we also have these available from the Hub. The Hub is open every morning from 8.15am and until 3pm every afternoon. See you soon!
Museum display
This week in the Hub we have a new display from the Qld Museum. This display continues our focus on all things history and we have some items highlighting early explorers, including Joseph Banks; and some items highlighting early settlers.

Have a fantastic week

Pine Rivers District Cross Country Review
Mango Hill competed in the Pine Rivers District Cross Country trials last Wednesday. In wonderful conditions, runners made their way to Pine Rivers Park to compete against the 22 other schools in the district.
Students were extremely excited and nerves were definitely present. The course, which consisted of laps around Pine Rivers Park, was in excellent condition with 10-year-old competitors completing 2km and 11- and 12-year-old competitors completing the 3km course.
The attitude that Mango Hill runners displayed prior, during and after running was excellent. All competitors completed their race to the best of their ability with many students happy to improve on their performance from the MHSS Cross Country.
Mango Hill had three runners finish in the top eight, which qualified them for the Pine Rivers District team to compete at the Metropolitan North Cross-Country Trials later this term. Jayda K (2nd – 12 year Girls) had a fantastic race to gain her second podium finish at a district event. Cloudia (4th – 11 year Girls) and Emilia (6th – 11 year Girls) also ran fantastic races to gain their selections.
Well done to all the Mango Hill runners and a special thankyou to the parents who came on the day to cheer on our team.
