News from our Partners

I trust everyone had the opportunity to catch up on some time to recharge the battery on Monday. The colder months can be challenging as daylight hours are shorter and it can feel like we are always working and not having time to do our favourite things outside of work hours. Students often feel this way as well. It’s important we continue to provide students time for their favourite tasks outside of school hours. This might include; kicking a footy, reading a book, watching a movie… These times allow us to regroup, regulate and recharge. Without this, there can be a tendency for us to become tired and feel a little burnt out, impacting our mood. I have asked staff to make a deliberate plan for how they are going to make time for themselves and loved ones. This might be a timely reminder for our families and children to formulate some deliberate plans around this.
Events
This week we welcome our Prep, Year 1, Year 2, Year 3 and Year 4 Special Person’s for a ‘Stay and Play’ afternoon. We also have our amazing and dedicated P&C holding their annual Mothers’ Day Stall. Please support this as funds come back into our school to improve our offerings for our students. We also have a Parent Chit Chat Session on Friday with the topic ‘Building Skills of Regulation’ being explored. Next Monday 13 May, we will be holding our P&C meeting. We would love to see you there.
Thank you
It’s timely to once again thank our ‘Team Mango’ staff for always being prepared to go above and beyond. Whether it be dancing, public speaking, sports or debating. We have so many teachers giving up their time before school, after school or on weekends to allow our students to be involved with ‘extra curricula’. For this I thank them! Our culture of learning is high and our culture of giving is even higher.

Lockdown
As part of Education Queensland's policies and procedures we will be holding a lockdown drill on Friday 17 May 2024. These drills allow us to prepare for an unlikely emergency that may arise. On Friday 17 May, you may hear our lockdown alarm but please do not be alarmed as this is only a drill.
Lastly, to all our Mango Hill Mums and those who take on the role of a mother, Happy Mothers’ Day. We hope you have a splendid day.

This week in Care Class we will be focusing on Care for Self by identifying stress in our bodies and expressing emotions appropriately. Some physical signs of stress include the following.
- muscles tighten
- heart starts racing
- breath becomes shorter and faster
- thoughts speed up
- getting sweaty
- start feeling a big emotion.
As a class we will look at ways to de-stress. Some activities may include meditation, deep breathing, going for a walk, having a drink of water, listening to music, counting to 10 and drawing. This can help to calm breathing, express thoughts more easily, feel happy, listen to instructions and feel more relaxed. When we recognise the signs of stress, we are able to find ways to help so we can be ready to learn and more relaxed.
We will also focus on being in the right place at the right time. Before school for Prep – Year 2 that is the Junior Undercover Area and for Years 3-6 it is the Piazza or Middle Years Area. When their bell rings students will walk sensibly to their classroom and follow the class routine including unpacking their bag and begin the assigned activity.
Active School Travel
Team Mango is excited to be one the first schools to launch the City of Moreton Bay (Council) Active School Travel (AST) initiative. This initiative is part of Council’s Accessible Schools Program (ASP). You would have seen a number of infrastructure changes and upgrades happening around our school recently, including new supervised crossings at Kinsellas Road East and Bonnet Parade, new footpaths, and a number of safety improvements such as pedestrian fencing at Opal Street and signs and line marking changes in surrounding residential areas to better manage parking behaviour during school peaks.
Now it’s time for the next phase: the Active School Travel (AST) initiative.
What’s the Aim?
The goal is to see more students walking, riding or using public transport to and from school. Get to know our local community, meet other Team Mango families and have a healthy start and end to the school day by walking, riding or using public transport!
The map below, shows walking routes to use. Our Council is partnering with us to give prizes to students we see walking, riding or using public transport. These prizes will be given at random. Who knows when the prize givers will turn up! There are also raffle tickets to go in the draw to win one of four scooters at the end of the year.

So - the more you walk or ride, the more tickets you get for the raffle. Check out the other prizes you might get too!
Pssssst! Friday 17 May might be a great day to walk or ride to school. Join us in the piazza after you walk or ride to school, to hear more information about the Active School Travel initiative, public transport options, and safe walking routes to school.
To help us monitor the success of the AST initiative, it will be appreciated if you can tell us how you currently travelling to school by completing a very short four question survey by clicking on the link or using the QR code below.

Viewing Virtual Parade
From this week, virtual parades for ALL year levels can be accessed through our Student Portal (link via the school website, under the ePAL section). To login and watch the parade with your child, parents will need their child to login using their school username and password. If your child is unsure of this, please contact their class teacher.
In our virtual parades, we celebrate our Students of the Week, Golden Ticket winners, Specialist Class awards, as well as deliver key messages. We encourage you to check them out!

Patterns in Prep!
In maths this term, along with length, we are learning about patterns. Our learners are recognising the element within a pattern and creating patterns of their own. Here are prep N making and describing patterns this week – great job Prep N!
We look forward to seeing our Mums and special people on Friday afternoon and wish you a lovely day on Sunday.

Thank you Team Year 1 Families for supporting our young friends to have the best start to each day. Massive shout out to all the families who have been trying so hard to be on time. I see you! We really value your efforts!
Our next challenge to tackle together is hats, hats, hats. When we wear them to and from school, we definitely have them for playtime.
Let’s see if we can all wear our hats to and from school for the rest of this week!
We’ve got this, Year 1!

Measuring Up in Year 2
This term the students in Year 2 have been exploring measurement. students have been comparing and ordering objects based on their length, capacity and area.
When students are measuring:
- length, they are focusing on whether an object is longer or shorter, longest or shortest.
- capacity, they are exploring how much space a container holds.
- area, they are investigating how much space a surface covers.
In Year 2 students do their investigating not with measuring cups, rulers or tape measures but with informal units like unifix cubes, ice cream scoops, paper clips, pegs and post-it-notes. The manipulation of informal units helps prepare students for when they do come to use standard units in later year levels.
When students are given opportunities to work with informal units, they start to understand the importance of starting at the edge of the object that they are trying to measure and then making sure there are no gaps when lining up a unit or filling an object.
Look at these super stars in 2F measuring the area of different shapes using unifix cubes.

Year 3 Stay & Play
I would like to invite our families to attend a stay and play this Thursday, celebrating all the wonderful mothers in our lives. We would love to see you in our classrooms from 8:30am - 9:00am. All our family members and carers are welcome to attend.
Caring for Learning
Earlier this week I participated in Learning Walk and Talks across Year 3. I was amazed at the standard of work our students are producing in our writing unit this term. Each Year 3 class has been working hard on creating a diary entry and adopting the role of a specific character. This week our writers have created sad and frustrated moods to match the chapter in the book, Charlottes Web. By carefully choosing noun and verb groups to match the mood, our authors have painted a picture in the reader’s mind.
I have also popped into rooms to observe maths lessons. Our students have been investigating number patterns. This term we have built our understanding of creating and describing number patterns into growing patterns and number patterns that have a combination of operations. How amazing is the complex number pattern created by our clever teaching team!

Learning in Italian
It was wonderful visiting the Year 4 classes while they engaged in their Italian lessons this week! Students have been exploring different holiday locations in Italy and had fun trying to convince me why I should travel there. They discussed the activities that could be completed there and the features of the holiday destination. You should definitely ask your children about these places! Please check out some photos below.

Stay and Play
Just a reminder that our Stay and Play is this week from 8:30-9 am in the Year 4 classrooms. We would love you to join us, if you are available.
Upcoming Zoo Excursion
Please ensure permission forms and payments are being made for our upcoming Zoo Excursion. If you require support or have any questions, please reach out to your child's class teacher.

Ready to Learn Scale
At Mango Hill State School, we acknowledge students arrive at school with varying degrees of being ‘ready to learn’. Being ‘ready to learn’ is a complex mix of both internal and external factors. Helping students increase their awareness of where they are at on the Ready Scale allows them to identify and implement strategies to increase the readiness to learn.
The Berry Street Education Model identifies 5 steps in the self-regulation process.
- Emotion and feeling identification
- Preferred feeling state or emotion (goal / intention)
- Identification of required input to feel better (unmet need)
- Initiate healthy action to meet the need
- Evaluate if this worked
Information Reports
As part of creating information reports during Term 2 students have been working hard at applying feedback to improve their information reports focusing on the following.
- Selecting and organising Ideas – I include two well researched ideas including carefully chosen images
- Choosing words – I use precise scientific and technical language in the reports
- Creating sentences – I start sentences focussing on and linking to main ideas.
- Checking punctuation and spelling – I check spelling for accuracy

Learning in Year 6
This term in Maths, our students are deepening their understanding of fractions. In Year 6, students locate a range of fractions, improper fractions and mixed numbers on open number lines. They are also learning to calculate fractions of a quantity and add and subtract fractions.
Fractions is a great concept to consolidate with your children at home. So many things in everyday life can be represented as fractions, especially food! Some great discussions with your children could be prompted by asking questions like, “would you prefer 1 ½ pizzas or 7/4 pizzas?”. Students reasoning through mathematical thinking is an important skill and a great one to practise!

Transitions to High School
This week we had Murrumba State Secondary College visit our school to share about the academies they have on offer. I know that some other local high schools have open days on this term, including Mango Hill State Secondary College. The transition to high school is an important one and something that we want to support our students and families with as best we can. The sooner we know where your child is attending, the sooner we can begin planning transition supports (transition supports with Mango Hill State Secondary College will begin in Term 3). If you are yet to confirm where your child is attending high school in 2025, now is the time to act.
Interschool Sport
This Friday, Year 5 and 6 students will be attending interschool sport. Our students always do a great job of representing MHSS by displaying the Four Cares and 5 Values while competing. I know that our Year 6 students will demonstrate great leadership on Friday. Good luck to everyone participating!

Accelerated Reader
It has been fabulous to see so many students in the Hub before school and at lunch times reading, quizzing and finding their next AR books. AR requires plenty of commitment and dedication – and what a great way to develop this skill!
Congratulations to Leah who has plenty of commitment and dedication… she has been reading and quizzing with great gusto this year to reach her goal of finishing AR. Leah has now completed all of the levels of AR right up to 9.0! We are very proud of her and included a photo here to show her joy as well! Well done Leah!
Premier’s Reading Challenge
We are very excited to once again participate in the Premier’s Reading Challenge. This year the challenge begins on the 7 May and continues until 23 August. Children should read as many books as possible and record these on the special PRC Reading Record Form. The form is attached here but also available in print from the Hub.
Students from Prep to Year 4 need to read 20 books, and students in Years 5 and 6 need to read 15 books. There is plenty of time to read, but this is a great week to get started! All participants will receive a certificate from the Premier as an acknowledgement of their participation in this yearly event.
All books read or listened to can be included on the PRC Reading Record Form so don’t forget to include your library books, Home Reading books, AR books and favourite books from home! Completed forms should be returned to the Hub – but there is no rush!
Have a fantastic week

Physical Education News
Well this term is all about Sports Day (Prep-2) and the Athletics Carnival (Year3-6). All students in PE from Prep-Year 6 will focus on preparing for these big events which are held at the end of Term 2.
More information will come out later in the term but please see confirmed dates as follows.
- Week 10 Monday 17 June – Junior Sports Day (all Year Prep, 1 and 2 students compete)
- Week 10 Tuesday 18 June – Senior Athletics Carnival – Discus, 200m/800m Finals (Some Yr 3-6 students compete)

Due to large student numbers at Mango Hill SS, we have a split Senior Athletics Carnival. This is to ensure students get the maximum opportunity to participate, students have enough space to compete safely and we have enough room for all spectators who attend. It will be a busy end to the term but we are thoroughly looking forward to it!

A reminder that our Boys and Girls AFLQ Schools Cup Training Squads will be training Thursday 3:00 pm-4:00 pm on the MHSS Oval.
Pine Rivers District Cross Country Review
Mango Hill competed in the Pine Rivers District Cross Country trials last Wednesday. In wonderful conditions, runners made their way to Pine Rivers Park to compete against the 22 other schools in the district.
Students were extremely excited and nerves were definitely present. The course, which consisted of laps around Pine Rivers Park, was in excellent condition with 10-year-old competitors completing 2km and 11- and 12-year-old competitors completing the 3km course.
The attitude that Mango Hill runners displayed prior, during and after running was excellent. All competitors completed their race to the best of their ability with many students happy to improve on their performance from the MHSS Cross Country.
Mango Hill had three runners finish in the top eight, which qualified them for the Pine Rivers District team to compete at the Metropolitan North Cross-Country Trials later this term. Jayda K (2nd – 12 year Girls) had a fantastic race to gain her second podium finish at a district event. Cloudia (4th – 11 year Girls) and Emilia (6th – 11 year Girls) also ran fantastic races to gain their selections.
Well done to all the Mango Hill runners and a special thankyou to the parents who came on the day to cheer on our team.
