Thank you to our student leaders, staff and parents who attended the ANZAC Day commemoration and march at Kallangur.
Thank you also to those who were able to join us for our school commemoration on Friday 26 April.

This term our senior leadership team is working alongside teachers to analyse Term 1 data and plan the deliberate decisions we will make in order to continue to shift our students’ learning before the end of Semester 1. Team Mango works relentlessly to improve student well-being and academic achievement. In relation to academic achievement some of the deliberate decisions made include the following.
- The use of individualised and targeted feedback. Feedback thrives on errors and is aimed at growing the learner. Feedback focussing on what students already know does not change learning. As a team, we spend a lot of time getting to know the learner and finding out exactly what the learner’s next steps are in order to make the biggest difference.
- We use Bump It Up Walls and Learning Walls to assist with student learning. These walls provide supports for our students to assist them with their work as well as understand the purpose of the unit.
- Our staff are lifelong learners. We have a huge skill set that we draw upon at Mango Hill. Teachers and members of the leadership team work collaboratively to provide feedback on each other’s practice. We are fortunate to be able to work in teams to plan and assess together. This helps us to ensure consistency in approach and marking.
I’d like to acknowledge the work of our staff and thank them for their continual drive and unrelenting focus on contributing to make a difference to our students.
This week I was fortunate enough to conduct one of the State’s first Precinct Pre-review conditions in North Queensland, Mt Isa. Precincts are part of Education Queensland’s Equity and Excellence Strategy. Precincts are being trialled to implement targeted approaches in response to local needs. It involves interagency collaboration and involves developing partnerships and pathways through co-design.
Here are two beautiful photos looking out of the windows where I was working. One is at night time and looks amazing!

This week in Care Class we will be focusing on Care for Self by identifying stress in our bodies and expressing emotions appropriately. Some physical signs of stress include the following.
- muscles tighten
- heart starts racing
- breath becomes shorter and faster
- thoughts speed up
- getting sweaty
- start feeling a big emotion.
As a class we will look at ways to de-stress. Some activities may include meditation, deep breathing, going for a walk, having a drink of water, listening to music, counting to 10 and drawing. This can help to calm breathing, express thoughts more easily, feel happy, listen to instructions and feel more relaxed. When we recognise the signs of stress, we are able to find ways to help so we can be ready to learn and more relaxed.
We will also focus on being in the right place at the right time. Before school for Prep – Year 2 that is the Junior Undercover Area and for Years 3-6 it is the Piazza or Middle Years Area. When their bell rings students will walk sensibly to their classroom and follow the class routine including unpacking their bag and begin the assigned activity.
Active School Travel
Team Mango is excited to be one the first schools to launch the City of Moreton Bay (Council) Active School Travel (AST) initiative. This initiative is part of Council’s Accessible Schools Program (ASP). You would have seen a number of infrastructure changes and upgrades happening around our school recently, including new supervised crossings at Kinsellas Road East and Bonnet Parade, new footpaths, and a number of safety improvements such as pedestrian fencing at Opal Street and signs and line marking changes in surrounding residential areas to better manage parking behaviour during school peaks.
Now it’s time for the next phase: the Active School Travel (AST) initiative.
What’s the Aim?
The goal is to see more students walking, riding or using public transport to and from school. Get to know our local community, meet other Team Mango families and have a healthy start and end to the school day by walking, riding or using public transport!
The map below, shows walking routes to use. Our Council is partnering with us to give prizes to students we see walking, riding or using public transport. These prizes will be given at random. Who knows when the prize givers will turn up! There are also raffle tickets to go in the draw to win one of four scooters at the end of the year.

So - the more you walk or ride, the more tickets you get for the raffle. Check out the other prizes you might get too!
Pssssst! Friday 17 May might be a great day to walk or ride to school. Join us in the piazza after you walk or ride to school, to hear more information about the Active School Travel initiative, public transport options, and safe walking routes to school.
Viewing Virtual Parade
From this week, virtual parades for ALL year levels can be accessed through our Student Portal (link via the school website, under the ePAL section). To login and watch the parade with your child, parents will need their child to login using their school username and password. If your child is unsure of this, please contact their class teacher.
In our virtual parades, we celebrate our Students of the Week, Golden Ticket winners, Specialist Class awards, as well as deliver key messages. We encourage you to check them out!

Prep learning in Maths
This week I had the pleasure of joining Prep M during Maths. This term, Prep students are learning to compare the length of objects. Prep M were set some challenges and did a great job inside and outside of the classroom practising their skills of accurately comparing the length of objects. They were able to find objects longer than their pen and even found objects that were longer than their little finger but shorter than their pen by making direct comparisons! It was delightful to see how engaged the learners were and by the discussions they had with each other when looking for objects. Great work Prep M!
Getting ready for iPads in Prep
In Semester 2, Prep students will begin to integrate the use of iPads into learning in class. Please keep an eye out for an email from us with further information on this.

A Quick Goodbye is a Good Goodbye
Our Year 1 teaching team is working hard to ensure a smooth start to each school day - and we need your help!
When we reflect on our school days, we find most “bumps” are happening in the first session of the day.
And when we unpack these “bumps” we can track them back to the very beginning of the day at drop off and settling in time.
Our Year 1s are Ready to Be Their Best when they:
- arrive at 8.15 and have time to unpack their own bags and connect with their teacher and friends
- say a quick goodbye to caregivers - one kiss, one hug, “see you this afternoon” is a long standing routine that works best for most students. Prolonged goodbyes can actually increase uncertainty. Us adults lead the way!
- have their belongings for the day - hats hats hats. Did I mention hats?!!
- have a water bottle and brain break snack easily accessible
- have iPads switched off on the way to school and they arrive to school with them fully charged.
We use the Ready Scale in our rooms to identify our starting point for the day. We have a class morning meeting each morning, to establish our daily routines and connect with each other. When carers linger, or when many students are late to arrive, it doesn’t allow for this vital Time for Connection. Our little people thrive on connections with teachers and classmates and we develop our classroom cultures through our routines, especially our morning ones.
We hope you can help us to ensure our Year 1s have a smooth start to each day and we thank you for your support.

Exploring Money in Year 2
This term the Year 2s are exploring money. They are learning to recognise each of the Australian coins and notes and to count mixed collections of them. The students are also learning to read and write amounts and compare if they have enough to make purchases.
There are lots of ways you can help your child develop their confidence with money.
- Allow your child to play with money at home. Give them an opportunity to explore the coins and notes in their money box.
- Do a coin rubbing by placing a coin under a piece of paper and rub a crayon over the top. Talk to your child about what animals they see and who is on the back of each of the coins.
- Allow your child to pay for items at the shop. Show them the coins and notes you are using to pay for items.
- Count pocket money and money in your child’s money box. Talk about which coins could be traded in for a note of the same value (e.g. 3 x $1 and 1 x $2 coin could be traded for 1 x $5 note)
- If there is something special your child is saving up for, talk about how much money they have and then how much they need to save.
The students in 2E have been busy making different amounts using coins of mixed denomination.

Caboolture Historical Village
What a wonderful few days our Year 3’s had visiting the Caboolture Historical Village. The feedback from the volunteers at Caboolture Historical Village was glowing, with how well our students showed respect, cared for others and engaged in their learning outside of the school. I am so proud of our Year 3 friends. A big thank you to our wonderful parent helpers and teachers who attended on the days. This experience will be invaluable in our HASS unit exploring perspectives from the past and present.
I have thoroughly enjoyed hearing all the exciting adventures our students were able to enjoy. The gem sieving, old school house and the train ride were the standout highlights for many of our students.

Cooler Weather Uniforms
As we approach our cooler season, now is a great time to start thinking of getting out jumpers, trackpants and tights. A reminder that our expectation is that students wear the correct navy jumper/trackpants with the Mango Hill State School logo. You can help us out at home by ensuring your child’s warm clothes fit properly and are labelled.

Learning in Year 4!
Our students are continually learning their number facts, in order to develop efficiency with solving mathematical problems. Our teachers focus on teaching strategies and then throughout the week, students engage in a range of number fact games to consolidate this understanding and develop fluency. It was great to visit 4C while they played a game called 'headache'. You can support your children at home by quizzing them on their number facts.
Deadly Choices
Our First Nations students have had the opportunity to participate in the Deadly Choices program this term. This runs on Mondays during middle session.
Our Prep-Year 3 students have loved the Traditional Indigenous Games Program, while our Years 4-6 students are completing the Healthy Lifestyle Program.
Check out some photos below!

ANZAC Day- We Thank You
A special thank you to the school leaders who represented Mango Hill State School at the Pine Rivers ANZAC Day march. You did a great job of representing our school. Thank you to the families that contributed to our Year 5 ANZAC Day wreath.
Thank you to our community members who have served in both the Australian and New Zealand Defence Forces. It was wonderful to see some of our community members attending our classrooms to help educate our students.
Writing - Compare and Contrast
During the past week, students have been studying language features of diary entries and information reports.
When writing a diary entry, students have been learning how an author uses evaluative language to create judgement, opinion or a point of view.
When creating an information report, students have been learning the importance of scientific language including noun groups to describe an animal.
Math
In Math, students have been interpreting and creating graphs. This includes ensuring they have all the key features that help us make meaning including a title, data points, axis labels and a scale.

Learning in Year 6
This week I enjoyed visiting 6G and 6B during their writing lessons. In both classes, students were writing an introduction for their analysis of Tim Winton’s text, Blueback. This unit requires students to identify the author’s key message within each chapter (and the text as a whole) and argue how the author has communicated a message through their story.
In 6G, students focused on writing an introduction that included the author’s overall message, along with their opinion about the text. They provided feedback to one another on their writing and identified celebrations within each other’s text.
In 6B, students wrote an introduction that included the author’s overall message, then collaborated to find quotes from the text to support their opinion. I was impressed to see the careful selection of evidence from the text to support their opinion for the overall message.

Cybersafety in Year 6
At different times throughout the year, I have been made aware of students in Year 6 uploading content to social media, commenting in social media and participating in group chats outside of school. Unfortunately, some of this content and communication is negative and inappropriate, causing problems and conflicts between students at school. This ultimately impacts on their learning and wellbeing.
Our children are savvy users of technology and often know more than we do in terms of what it is capable of. It is important that we continue to remain informed on how we can best monitor our children’s use of technology; what they are uploading, who they are talking to, and what they are saying.
Tonight, we have a cybersafety presentation targeted at parents and delivered by QLD police. The presentation will give us insight into what to look out for with our children as they engage with technology independently. I strongly encourage those who can attend to come along.

Scholastic Book Club
Thanks to all of those who have already placed their online orders for the Scholastic Book Club. Orders close today and we are unable to receive any more orders after 1 May.
Lost property
Outside of the Hub we have a special spot for all of our school lost property. While every effort is made to regularly check and return these items to their owners, we are unable to return items that are not clearly named. While hats, water bottles and umbrellas might look familiar and special to you, don’t forget we have more than 1600 children at our school so it is easy for these to be mixed up and then lost for ever. Please feel free to pop in during Hub opening hours to check the lost property. The very best way to avoid this spot is to clearly name all items with children’s first and last names (and classes if possible).
History on Display
This week in the Hub we have a special display focussing on items from ‘the olden days’. While I haven’t used one of these irons or a slate, I did have a school port exactly like the one from the Museum… so maybe some of the things are not that old!? Pop in to see for yourself!
The Hub is open every morning from 8:15 am and every afternoon until 3:00 pm.
Have a fantastic week

P&C Update
Mothers' Day is fast approaching. We are still looking for volunteers! Please get in touch if you can help out.
A Letter From Moreton Bay Regional Council
“Dear Parents, Guardians and Carers,
The City of Moreton Bay through its Accessible Schools Program is committed to deliver infrastructure around schools to improve safety for children, promote active transport as an alternative to car travel, and reduce congestion on our network around schools.
Council is planning the installation of a new raised crossing at the back of the school on Neptune Court to provide a safe pedestrian crossing to the school. The crossing will require that vehicles give way to pedestrians crossing the road.
The crossing is expected to be completed during the months of May and June 2024, and will be constructed during the hours of 9am to 2pm. Work is expected to be completed within approximately one week, weather permitting.
During construction, some disruption to traffic is expected and there will be times when Neptune Court will not be accessible from Mallard Street and vice versa.
Parents may wish to take advantage of Council’s extensive pathway infrastructure around the school by completing part of their journey by foot and avoiding school traffic. Parking in nearby local streets and walking, scooting, or riding the last leg to the school is a great way to enjoy the benefits of active travel while avoiding traffic congestion at school.”
