Our students returned to school with a fantastic attitude towards learning and displayed the Four Cares with gusto. When talking to students, particularly our senior students, our school wants our students to recognise the link between the school’s Four Cares and how these cares can support students to make positive life choices in the future. Our school’s expectations reflect the expectations of what it takes to be a kind, safe, respectful and a future’s thinking human being.
A public holiday will be held on Thursday 25 April, to commemorate ANZAC Day. Members of the school and student leadership team will be marching in the Kallangur Parade on Thursday. As a school, we will be holding a special ceremony on Friday 26 April at 9:00 am. Families are more than welcome to attend. As we gather to commemorate ANZAC Day, we are reminded of the courage and sacrifice displayed by the men and women who served or are currently serving our country in the armed forces. We also acknowledge the families who supported those who served or are serving. Their contributions are a testament to the strength and resilience of our nation. To all who have served in the past and are currently serving for all Australians, thank you.
Due to current industrial and workforce complexities, our school has had to reimagine the way we will be running our disco this year. Therefore the disco on May 3 will no longer be occurring but stay tuned as the school and the P&C are working to restructure what the disco will look like this term.
We welcome Mrs Bex Orole back to Team Mango. Mrs Orole will commence teaching on the Year 1 PACE classroom as Mrs Jordan Olsen moves into other various roles as she prepares for impending maternity leave. Thankfully Mrs Olsen will stay with us a little longer before commencing this leave.
As we approach the end of Week 2, classroom teachers are orientating students to the big purpose of their English unit. This looks like teachers unpacking, collaboratively with the students, the ‘why?’ of their learning. It’s important students understand the purpose as they are more likely to take these learnings from that unit and transfer and apply this learning to new contexts. Members of the senior leadership team regularly conduct Learning Walks and Talks to talk to students about their learning and to track how students are applying new knowledge and feedback from their teacher. We generally ask five questions along the lines of:
- What are you learning? (Do students know the unit intention?)
- How are you going with your learning? (Do students know the success criteria?)
- How do you know? (Do students understand the descriptive feedback they have received?)
- How can you improve? (Do students know their next steps?)
- Where do you go for help? (Are students working towards being self-regulating learners)
Although it’s only early days and teachers have just commenced new units, I encourage you to ask your child some of these questions to ascertain their understanding. As the term progresses, their understanding of the unit will deepen and their answers will show more depth.
Lastly, we’d appreciate it if you would participate in the survey below via the link below, conducted by the council. The purpose of the survey is to track how our students travel to school. The council have been proactively working in conjunction with our school to minimise traffic congestion and upgrade the infrastructure and resources to assist families to walk/ride/scooter or bus to school. The survey will only take a minute to complete.

This week in Care Class we will be focusing on Care for Others by showing gratitude. We will be learning how to be grateful for things in our lives and to commemorate Anzac Day. It is important to show respect for others and value the contributions made.
Students will attend a whole school parade on Friday morning in Gigum Hall. We will take this opportunity as a whole school to remember the service men and women who served and are currently serving to help shape our nation.
When I am grateful:
- I focus on experiences rather than on material things.
- I am more empathetic and forgiving.
ANZAC DAY - School Service
Students are required to wear their formal uniform.
Cybersafety Parent Information Session
Our school will be hosting a ThinkUKnow cybersafety presentation on Wednesday 1 May at 5:30 pm in the Wandani Centre. All parents and carers are encouraged to attend. Please note that the presentation for parents, carers and educators is not suitable for children due to the nature of the topics discussed.
ThinkUKnow Australia is an evidence-based education program delivered nationally to keep children safe online.
ThinkUKnow Australia is a partnership between the Australian Federal Police, Microsoft Australia, Datacom and the Commonwealth Bank of Australia. The program is delivered in collaboration with policing partners New South Wales Police Force, Northern Territory Police, Queensland Police, South Australia Police, Tasmania Police, Western Australia Police, as well as Neighbourhood Watch Australasia.
This is a fantastic opportunity for you to learn more about young people and the online environment, and how you can help them to be safe and responsible users of technology.
For more information, you can visit www.thinkuknow.org.au
Guidance Officer
From 22 April through until 3 May we are celebrating Guidance Officer week.
At Mango Hill State School did you know that we are lucky to have a whole Student Support Team? In addition to our full time Guidance Officer, Tracy, we also have our Student Wellbeing Professional, Hannah, our Student Welfare Officer, Tegan and our Speech Language Pathologist, Emma.
Our fabulous team works together to provide a variety of different supports to help our students be ready to engage in all academic and social aspects of school.

Ditto Show
This week our Prep friends enjoyed the Ditto show which shared key messages around personal safety. The children enjoyed singing and dancing whilst hearing the message that if they ever feel unsure or unsafe in a situation they can ‘recognise, react and report’. Recognise refers to how their body might feel, for example butterflies in the tummy. React might include leaving the situation and report refers to talking to a trusted adult.
Our Prep friends have had a great start back this term and I have been so impressed at the care for learning going on in class!

Hi Year 1 Friends
A few reminders for our Year 1 families.
- Hats, hats, hats! We need to wear our hats to and from school each day. When we wear our hat to school, we’re not only protecting ourselves from the sun… we’re also making sure we have our hat with us for playtime!
- Right place, right time. Before school, we need to be waiting in the junior under covered area, if we don’t have our parents with us. If our parents are with us, we wait behind the blue lines.
- We are big enough and strong enough to carry and unpack our own bags.
- Share important information with class teachers. We’re here to help. If you missed your parent teacher interview, please make sure you reach out to your child’s class teacher and connect with them. We want to partner with you.
- Payments for Nudgee Beach are open. It’s the best excursion! We love Nudgee Beach and we don’t want anyone to miss out. Make sure you pay or arrange a payment plan.
- iPADs come to school each day, switched off, fully charged, and in our school bags. We unpack these from our bags each morning and bring them into the classroom.
- Water bottles everyday.
When we have our things ready, and when we have a smooth start to our day, it helps us to be Ready to Be Our Best!

Exploring Stereotypes in Year 2
This term the students in Year 2 will explore how authors use stereotypes in stories. They will read and view a range of versions of ‘The Three Little Pigs’ and ‘Little Red Riding Hood’ and unpack how the characters in these stories can be labelled as either good or bad based on the choices the author makes around the language and also how the illustrator portrays them through the types of drawings used.
The students will then springboard from their reading into writing, unlocking their imaginations by writing from the perspective of one of these characters. They will write to recount the day in the life of a fairy tale character that doesn’t follow a traditional stereotype.
- What if the Big Bad Wolf wasn’t really bad? What would his day be like if he was trying to be good?
- What if the three little pigs weren’t all that hard working? What if they decided to down tools and be lazy for a day?
- What if Little Red Riding Hood wasn’t very sweet and kind? What mischief might she get up to on her way to Grandma’s house?
We can’t wait to read those recounts at the end of Term 2!

Year 3 Lunch Clubs
This term we have some fantastic new lunch time clubs on offer for our Year 3 students. Each Tuesday at second break, Mr Paul is running a Martial Arts club where students can practise their fitness and skills in the Wandani Hall. This term we also have Mrs Verster running the gardening club on Thursday at second break behind the canteen to learn all things gardening. It is so great having wonderful structured play at lunch time.
Charlotte’s Web Diary
This term we have started reading a childhood favourite, Charlotte’s Web. Across Term 2, our students will learn skills on diary writing, writing from the perspective of a character from the book. In this unit our students learn all about creating overall feelings and mood. I was blown away by the standard of work our students demonstrated in Week 1. I can’t wait to see where we can get to.
Have a great week.

Year 4 Writing
Over the past week, our students have started reading 'Rowan of Rin', discussing the thoughts, feelings and events of the characters. It has been great seeing students taking on the role of Rowan in their classrooms to really develop their understanding of the feelings before writing diary entries from Rowan's perspective.
Be sure to ask your children about the different events in the book and discuss the different thoughts and feelings linked to these.

Uniform
A friendly reminder about uniforms. We encourage all of our students to wear the Mango Hill State School uniform correctly and with pride every day. This includes wearing all black shoes, plain white socks and the Mango Hill State School jumper/jacket during the colder weather. Please remember to label your child's jumper. It is important that students also have a Mango Hill State School bag, or navy bag as an alternative. We also have an increasing number of students without hats at school. It is really important our students have their school hat to wear, for playtimes, before/after school and PE lessons to remain sun safe. Thank you for your support in helping our students to uphold the uniform expectations.

Maths
In Maths students have been focussing on data and how data can be visually represented. Students are using comparative language to determine how to best represent data.
Please continue to speak with your children about what they are learning in the classroom!

Camp Deposit Payments Due
Don’t forget that camp deposits are due this Friday! Year 6 camp at Tallebudgera is always a highlight of the year. If you have specific concerns about camp that you want to discuss prior to paying your deposit, please contact myself or your child’s class teacher. All deposits must be paid by Friday. Learning in Year 6
Teamwork makes the dreamwork! At our school we always here the phrase ‘Team Mango’. What I love about this phrase is that we don’t just hear it said but we see it enacted every day. This week I’ve enjoyed seeing our students collaborating during their learning in English and Maths to solve problems, annotate texts and provide feedback on each other’s work.

Accelerated Reader
We are very pleased to announce that the first AR Millionaire of Term 2 is Lucy! Lucy has been working hard all year to read, read and read! We are very proud of her and have added a photo to our Millionaire’s display in the Hub. Well done Lucy!
Now is a great time to set some new goals and to get started with AR! Ask your class teacher or pop into the Hub to see if we can help. You might like to reach a million words, or you might have a specific level to reach or a number of quizzes to pass. Whatever the goal, now is the time to start reading and quizzing!
The Hub is open every morning from 8.15am and until 3pm each afternoon. See you soon!
Scholastic Book Club
This term our school will participate in the Scholastic Book Club. Some time this week Class teachers will send home a Book Club brochure with all students. The Book Club is a great way to buy some new books for sharing with families and friends, while also supporting our school. A percentage of all sales are returned to the school in the form of new books for our Hub collection. All purchases help our school so we are always so very grateful for your support.
We can only accept online orders and all orders must be submitted before Wednesday 1 May.
Have a fantastic week

A final team to attend the QLD Netball Cup Day will be selected early in Term 3.
Students interested in trialing can add their name to the signup sheet which is located on the PE notice board in M Block (in front of PE office). Please also see the attached information sheet

A Letter From Moreton Bay Regional Council
“Dear Parents, Guardians and Carers,
The City of Moreton Bay through its Accessible Schools Program is committed to deliver infrastructure around schools to improve safety for children, promote active transport as an alternative to car travel, and reduce congestion on our network around schools.
Council is planning the installation of a new raised crossing at the back of the school on Neptune Court to provide a safe pedestrian crossing to the school. The crossing will require that vehicles give way to pedestrians crossing the road.
The crossing is expected to be completed during the months of May and June 2024, and will be constructed during the hours of 9am to 2pm. Work is expected to be completed within approximately one week, weather permitting.
During construction, some disruption to traffic is expected and there will be times when Neptune Court will not be accessible from Mallard Street and vice versa.
Parents may wish to take advantage of Council’s extensive pathway infrastructure around the school by completing part of their journey by foot and avoiding school traffic. Parking in nearby local streets and walking, scooting, or riding the last leg to the school is a great way to enjoy the benefits of active travel while avoiding traffic congestion at school.”
