Dear Team Mango
It’s so nice to welcome everyone back and welcome our
new students, families and staff to the Mango Hill State School Team. I’m hoping everyone is feeling recharged and ready to charge into Term 2. I’m optimistic about this term and know students will continue to work hard to enact teachers’ feedback to progress their learning and personal and social capabilities.
We have had some staffing changes for this term. Mr Ben Mills, Year 6 Deputy Principal, is now working a four-day week and Mrs Jess Rivett, HOD, will step into the role of Year 6 Deputy Principal on Fridays. Mr Ben Goulding has been successful in winning an Acting HOD role at another school. He will finish at Mango Hill State School this Friday. Mr Goulding is a big loss to our school and we wish him all the very best of luck with his new venture. We welcome back Mrs Suzie McEvoy who will work alongside Mrs Katie Thomas on 6G. Mrs McEvoy will also work in the role of Year 6 inclusive learning teacher for two days per week, allowing Mrs Pam Penrose to take on the role of Pedagogy Mentor. Mrs Steph Curran will work a four-day week this term. Mrs Nicole Carr will work the fifth day in 6C. Mrs Reena Singh returns to teach five-days a week.
We have lots of exciting events being held this term but one of the most popular events is the School Disco hosted by our fabulous P&C. The disco will be held on Thursday 2 May, 2024. Last year this school community event was hugely successful and we know this year will be just as wonderful. Please read the disco flyer and information closely and we ask that all parents/carers meet the disco deadline re. payment of tickets. In order to keep everyone safe and allow everyone to have fun on the night, there are associated rules, so please ensure you pay close attention to the ‘dos’ and ‘don’ts which will be realeased closer to the date.
Lastly, it was wonderful to see our students return to school in full school uniform. Thank you parents/carers! As the weather gets colder, it’s important students wear the Mango Hill State School jumper and continue to wear full black shoes, with black laces. Should any family be requiring financial assistance in decking your child out in the school uniform, please make contact with Jasmine Benfer - jbenf10@eq.edu.au
Here’s to what’s going to be a great term.

This week in Care Class we will be focusing on Care for Learning by working collaboratively as a team, setting personal goals for Term 2 and following our class Consistent Predictable Routines.
It is important to be prepared for learning. We can do that in the following ways.
- Have all of your equipment organised.
- Complete work on time.
- Ask for help respectfully when needed.
- Take pride in your work.
- Use computers and internet appropriately.
This week we will be creating a personal goal for Term 2 – this will be a smart goal to help us to achieve and feel successful. Smart goals can help us to work out how to get to our end goal. It can provide practical ways to obtain our goals. Setting goals helps us achieve things that we want in life. These goals can be immediate, short term or long term. At Mango Hill State School, we believe goal setting is valuable in all aspects of life.
ANZAC DAY - School Service
On Friday 26 April we will be conducting the Mango Hill State School, ANZAC Day service in Gigum Hall. This will be a whole school event to recognise our service men and women. We welcome our wider school community, parents and carers to attend this service, particularly current or former service men and women. We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your service. Students are required to wear their formal uniform.
Cybersafety Parent Information Session
Our school will be hosting a ThinkUKnow cybersafety presentation on Wednesday 1 May at 5:30 pm in the Wandani Centre. All parents and carers are encouraged to attend. Please note that the presentation for parents, carers and educators is not suitable for children due to the nature of the topics discussed.
ThinkUKnow Australia is an evidence-based education program delivered nationally to keep children safe online.
ThinkUKnow Australia is a partnership between the Australian Federal Police, Microsoft Australia, Datacom and the Commonwealth Bank of Australia. The program is delivered in collaboration with policing partners New South Wales Police Force, Northern Territory Police, Queensland Police, South Australia Police, Tasmania Police, Western Australia Police, as well as Neighbourhood Watch Australasia.
This is a fantastic opportunity for you to learn more about young people and the online environment, and how you can help them to be safe and responsible users of technology.

Welcome to Term 2
It has been wonderful to see our Prep friends back this week and ready to learn.
Learning in English
Last term in English, we learned how to share our ideas through drawing. This term we move into sharing ideas with others through creating text by retelling and writing about familiar events. To do this, children will first talk about an experience. They will learn how to use interesting words and describe what they did and how they felt. This is something you can support at home by discussing events that have taken place during the day or over the weekend. For example, ‘On Saturday, we went to the big park. It has a new, blue slide. I went down it really fast. I had so much fun!’
Helping your child talk through their ideas is a great support as they begin their learning journey as a writer. Please refer to your class newsletter for more information on the learning ahead this term.
Hearing screeners
Prep hearing screeners are taking place in April and May with spots still available. If you want to book your child in for this, please return a consent form and questionnaire to your child’s teacher as soon as possible. We highly recommend you take advantage of this opportunity.

Welcome to Term 2 Year 1 Friends!
This is the term where we usually see our Year 1s “rise” to the occasion of being Big Schoolers. Term 1 is often about learning how to navigate this new world of one teacher in the classroom, parents (mostly) not walking us to class anymore and managing age appropriate chores a bit more independently.
We can do hard things!
It’s important to let our students do as much for themselves as they are capable of doing. Year 1 students are more than capable of carrying their own bags and unpacking their own bags each morning. We aren’t asking them to walk barefoot through the snow for kilometres to get themselves to school (does anyone else have boomer parents who like to share their hard luck getting themselves to school stories?!!)
Our little ones are very privileged to live in a safe area. When you drop your child in the mornings, we always have staff at the front gate and our Year 1s can definitely navigate their way to their own classroom. They can get themselves to and from the tuckshop, the Hub, the Piazza and their classrooms and play space.
Thank you to everyone for booking and attending parent teacher interviews with your child’s class teacher. It’s such valuable time to collaborate and share about how your child is travelling, both at home and at school. Please be honest with us, about how your child is travelling in the home environment – we can often help! Whilst what we might see at school differs, there’s often some similarities too. And the more we chat and collaborate, the more we are on the same page about what we are seeing and how we can work together to help your child be successful – with school work and with play.

Welcome to Term 2
I hope you all enjoyed a restful and refreshing break. It has been terrific seeing so many smiling faces return for an action-packed Term 2. Visiting rooms, our students have hit the ground running and engaging in learning from Day 1, well done!
This term we have many exciting events and excursions upcoming. In Week 3 we will be visiting the Caboolture Historical Village to gain further insights into our HASS unit and how Australia has changed over time. We are still looking for volunteers to join us on this excursion. Please contact your child’s class teacher if you are available to attend.
Indigenous Art Workshop
Today we had our Indigenous Art Workshop that was run by Miss Shanahan. As part of our Visual Arts curriculum our students created an artwork using texture, taking inspiration from artworks created by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders. I can’t wait to see them all on display at the Art Show later this year.

Have a great week.

Welcome back to Term 2!
It has been wonderful to hear about many holiday adventures and seeing students returning ready to leap into learning!
This term, our students are exploring Money in their first Maths unit. Students have spent time exploring efficient strategies to calculate money problems and applying these strategies to solve more complex problems. Our teachers work hard to provide fun and engaging lessons every day for our students, with a focus on ensuring they have clarity in understanding what they are learning and why. I encourage you to ask your children about their learning in Maths, so that they can consolidate their understanding of this important concept.
Ways you can support at home:
- calculate the cost of the grocery order for the week
- calculate change you would receive after purchasing items
- read through catalogues and determine what you could buy given a certain amount of money
- read through menus, discussing the price list.
See some photos below of our students exploring money and solving problems in class!

Welcome to Term 2
I hope you all had a good break.
It has been great to see students return to school refreshed and ready to learn.
Curriculum
This term, in English, students will investigate how authors can share ideas and feelings through diary entries and can also present information through reports. Students will explore how language features help convey a message to an audience.
In Maths, students will engage in a range of maths activities and experiences as they solve simple problems involving multiplication and division. Students will learn to convert between 12- and 24-hour time, as well as gather, classify and interpret data. Students will also further develop their understanding of decimals.
Uniforms
As the cooler mornings start to take hold in Term 2, please ensure students have the correct school uniforms. Please ensure all uniforms are clearly labelled, especially hats and jumpers.

Welcome
Welcome back to all of our students and their families! To our new students and families, welcome to Team Mango!
I’ve enjoyed going around to catch-up with the Year 6 students upon their return to school and hearing about their holidays. It’s been fantastic to see the positivity about being back at school as they have all caught up with their friends over the past few days.
This term, I will be offline on Fridays. Mrs Jessica Rivett will be supporting the Year 6 cohort as Deputy Principal on Friday each week. She can be contacted on jxqui5@eq.edu.au or by phoning the school.
Learning in Year 6
Our students have jumped straight back into learning to start the term, with classes spending the first few days unpacking their units of work for Maths and English in Term 2. In English students are learning to argue how an author communicates a message through their story by writing a persuasive text analysis. Students have spent the first few days exploring what this text type looks like and how author’s use language to create meaning.
In Maths, students are learning all about fractions: how to locate them on a number line; how to identify a fraction of a quantity; and, how to add and subtract fractions. There are some great examples of fractions all around us in every day life. Look for opportunities to ask your child how they can share their knowledge of fractions with you, day-to-day.

Cybersafety Session for Parents
Last term, we had a visit from Queensland Police to talk to the students about the importance of being safe online. This term, we have a parent session available, where the presenters will go through cybersafety and online dangers from the parent perspectives, sharing strategies for how we can support our children to be safe and responsible online. I highly recommend blocking out Monday evening the 1May into your calendars to attend. The session will begin at 5:30 pm and end at 7:00 pm in the Wandani centre (on the far side of the Piazza).
Camp deposits
A reminder that camp deposits are due by Friday 26 April and will not be accepted after this date. Once we have confirmed numbers for students attending camp, we will allocate classes to specific weeks.
Camp will be held in weeks 1, 2, or 3 of Term 3 (8 - 12 July or 15 -19 July or 22 - 26 July 2024), at Tallebudgera Outdoor and Environmental Education Centre.
Please email your child's class teacher if you have any questions regarding camp.

Commemorating Anzac Day
As part of our school’s commemorations around Anzac Day, we have a special display in the Hub with a range of items from the Qld museum. These include some items from both World War 1 and the Vietnam war. We also have plenty of picture books and non-fiction books for students to borrow that highlight this topic.
The Hub is open every day from 8:15 am and until 3:00 pm each afternoon. Pop on down in the next week or so to have a look at these special items.
Term 2 Curriculum
This term students from Prep to Year 6 will continue their learning in English, Maths, Science, Technology and Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS) as well as their specialist subjects including Music, Physical Education and Dance. All students will also build their skills and understandings related to Visual Arts. Each year level will focus on a different aspect of visual art (e.g. line, colour, sculpture, perspective) as they prepare items for the Wandani Arts Fest which will be held in Term 3. The attached Curriculum Overview provides more details about the curriculum offerings in Term 2.
Accelerated Reader (AR)
The beginning of the term is such a great time to set some new goals for AR. How many books might you read this term? What level will you reach? How many quizzes will you pass successfully? How many words will you read?
Our library staff are always happy to help children find the perfect book as they strive towards their goals.
At the end of last term we were happy to celebrate with Violet, who reached her goal to complete AR. Violet has successfully quizzed all the way up to AR 9.0! This is an extraordinary achievement and a celebration of commitment and resilience. Congratulations Violet!
Have a fantastic week
