News from our Partners

Dear Parents and Carers
As we near towards the end of the term, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank you for your ongoing support and for partnering with us to educate our students. From experience I know how difficult it can be to juggle work/life as well as set your child up for educational success. Making lunches, washing uniforms, assisting with homework and so on requires effort and a huge amount of organisation. Thank you!
We value volunteers and know how it can be hard to donate time to volunteer. Often our parents have the perception that if they are to volunteer this has to be a regular and ongoing arrangement. This is not the case. Even if you are only available occasionally we would love your support. Safety is our number one priority and as such, parents with children attending the school do not require a blue card however extended family members such as grandparents do require an active blue card. As a school, we can assist with the organisation of blue cards. Should you or your extended family be interested in volunteering please contact Jasmine Benfer via jbenf10@eq.edu.au or alternatively phone the school and request to speak to her. Our Term 2 Volunteer Induction session will be held as per below.
Our Year 3 and 5 students continue with NAPLAN assessments this week. They are doing exceptionally well managing the additional assessments and everyone is trying their best. Well done to all Year 3 and 5 students.
Once again, over the next few weeks, and into early Term two, teachers will be holding parent teacher interviews. If you missed out on getting an interview time, please contact your child’s teacher directly to arrange a mutually convenient time.
School photos occur this week. Students are to wear their formal uniform. Due to the school operational requirements some classes have changed their photo times. Your child's class teacher would have communicated this with you if there has been a change of time or day with your child's class. Please see updated timetable for the next two days below.

Our teaching staff are committed to providing students with regular feedback on their learning. Visiting classrooms and talking to students about their learning is the best part of my week. It pleases me to hear students informing me about what they can do well and what their next steps are. Student agency is high and this is because we have a dedicated and committed staff who go above and beyond. I encourage you to ask your child about what they are learning, how they are going and what their next steps are.

This week in Care Class we will be focusing on Care for Self and how Unconditional Positive Regard helps ourself and others to be ready!
What is Unconditional Positive Regard?
- Showing your Care for Others, NO MATTER WHAT.
- Accept others for who they are.
- We’re all part of Team Mango, we all play a part in our group / class / school being 'Ready'.
- What I do and say affects others around me.
- My happiness/ positive good thoughts/ growth mindset can help others be 'ready' on the Ready Scale.
EVERYONE around you needs your positivity, your happiness, your support. They may not be a close friend. They may not like the same things as you. They may be very different to you or disagree with you sometimes – BUT everyone deserves your care and empathy - NO MATTER WHAT!
ANZAC DAY - School Service
On Friday 26 April we will be conducting the Mango Hill State School, ANZAC Day service in Gigum Hall. This will be a whole school event to recognise our service men and women. We welcome our wider school community, parents and carers to attend this service, particularly current or former service men and women. We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your service.
Mango Hill State School will be participating in the world-renowned ICAS Assessments once again this year. ICAS is developed by UNSW Global, a wholly owned subsidiary of UNSW Sydney, with over 35 years’ experience in educational assessments.
ICAS is designed to target students’ higher-order thinking and problem-solving skills in English, Mathematics, Science, Writing*, Spelling and Digital Technologies.
We encourage you to consider entering your child into ICAS this year. The assessments are suitable for students wishing to extend themselves academically and take up the personal challenge of competing in an international assessment. Your child will be presented with high-quality, expert-developed questions, allowing them to apply their learning without the need for prior study or revision.
Please see below a letter with further information regarding ICAS.

Parent teacher interviews
Parent teacher interviews started this week and will continue into the start of Term 2. Interviews are an important opportunity for you and your child’s teacher to discuss your child’s progress, including celebrations of learning and their next steps. If you have not booked an interview yet, I encourage you to do so. Partnership between home and school is a powerful way of supporting progress in learning, as outlined in the quote below. If you need any help in arranging an interview, please reach out so we can assist.
“If done well, parent engagement could add the equivalent of 2 or 3 extra years schooling for a child” (Hattie, 2008).
Term 1
As we approach the last week of Term 1, we are reflecting on the learning achieved over the last 9 weeks. Your child has made new friends, connected with new teachers, learned new ways of working and has been learning content from the Australian Curriculum in a range of subject areas. We are so proud of the achievements so far and are excited to see how we can build on this learning next term. We have just over a week to go and we are committed to finishing strong by maintaining our routines and learning. One exciting variation to this will be the Hat Parade on Thursday 28 March at 9am in the Piazza. Everybody is welcome, we look forward to seeing you there as we celebrate on the last day of Term together.

Mathematical Problem Solving
We’ve been learning how to solve open-ended, multi-step addition and subtraction problems in mathematics. Sometimes, we think we know the answer – and maybe we do! But we need to share our thinking, using mathematical language. Sometimes there is more than one answer.
Here’s a problem for you to solve at home together, with your child.
We are at the zoo. In the zoo enclosures, there are giraffes, flamingos and lions. Ben counted 26 legs in the zoo enclosures. Draw what Ben saw at the zoo.
Now that you’ve solved this problem, can you show your thinking using a part / part / part / whole model? What about a number line? Can you write a number sentence that matches your zoo drawing?
And, now that you’ve solved the problem and shown your thinking and proved you are right…
Can you solve the problem again, but in a different way?
Happy mathing!

Care Class
Every Friday we come together in our classes for Care Class. This is the time in the week where we explicitly teach our whole school expectations and how they relate to the Four Cares. The expectation is taught in class on a Friday and then revisited as a focus throughout the week.
In addition to teaching our whole school expectations, Care Classes this year have also focused on teaching students skills around self-regulation. Self-regulation is the ability to understand and manage your behaviour and your reactions to feelings and things happening around you.
It includes being able to do the following.
- Regulate reactions to strong emotions like frustration, excitement, anger and embarrassment.
- Calm down after something exciting or upsetting.
- Focus on a task.
- Refocus attention on a new task.
- Control impulses.
- Behave in ways that help you get along with other people.
(raisingchildren.net.au website)
In Care Class last week, students explored resilience. Students brainstormed different scenarios they might encounter where they need to show resilience. They then explored ways of responding to each situation that would show high resilience and low resilience responses. For example, a student might get a question wrong. A low resilience response would be to crumple up the paper, throw it in the bin and storm off. A high resilience response would be to ask for help to understand what to do next time.
Check out this great thinking from the students in 2C about high and low resilience responses.

Playtime in the Piazza
This week we have begun our trial to play in the Piazza at first and second break. A big thank you to Mrs Gough for arranging fantastic structured games and to our wonderful teachers for supporting our students with this new lunch time area. When playing in the Piazza, students can sit and chat with their friends on the seats or in the Astroturf area, play the structured games from the games cart and play handball across the multiple handball courts. A reminder that the stairs and playing around the buildings are out of bounds at break time.

NAPLAN
Well done to all our superstars who took part in NAPLAN for 2024. Across the last two weeks our students have demonstrated their understanding in literacy and numeracy tasks. I have been particularly impressed with the resilience and independence our students have shown. The first time completing any task can seem daunting, however our students have shown they were up to the challenge. Congratulations to all Year 3 students, you should be proud of your efforts.

Learning in Year 4
It is fantastic to see and celebrate the academic and personal growth of our students over this term.
In the final weeks of Term 1, our students are busy engaging in their Speaking and Listening units of work. They have been reading historical picture books, focussing on the ways in which the authors have used vocabulary and images to create these stories. They have also been learning how to express their points of view, using effective and appropriate interaction skills during group discussions.
Our students have been taking on different roles within their group discussions - summariser, extender, clarifier, encourager and presenter. Be sure to ask them about these roles!
Teachers have also been working with students on varying their tone, pace, pitch and volume using appropriate body language when working within their groups. Check out some of the photos below.

NAPLAN
Well done to all the Year 5 students participating in NAPLAN over the past fortnight. It was great to see students applying their knowledge they have acquired from Prep through to Year 5. NAPLAN is a point in time test which helps our school celebrate areas of success and helps schools identify areas of improvement. Thank you to all the families for helping students remain calm and relaxed during NAPLAN testing.
Kaboom Incursion
A reminder that Year 5 students will participate in the Kaboom incursion on Monday 25 April.
During the excursion, students will be undertaking the following activities.
- The students will see the performers demonstrate multiple aspects of the science of sound production in fun and engaging ways, while showing students how they can recycle and reuse everyday items to craft their own unique musical creations.
- They will explore dynamics and expression, using aural skills to identify and perform rhythm and pitch patterns. They will participate in body percussion to create rhythms and grooves throughout the show.
A reminder to complete permissions and that there is a cost of $7.00 via QParents.
Academic Achievement
It was great to see students over the term working collaboratively.
- Collaboration in the classroom is a deliberate strategy that helps students develop high-level thinking, oral communication, self-management, and leadership skills.
- Talking about text helps students organise their thoughts, clarify meaning and build on their current knowledge.

Learning in Year 6
This week, I visited 6K and 6D during their English lessons. Students in these classes have been working on their Speaking and Listening unit, that requires them to discuss a short story with a group. To do this well, students need to justify their point of view of a character with reference to language features and listen to points shared by their group members to then paraphrase and ask questions that clarify and challenge.
Well done to 6K and 6D who demonstrated respectful discussions within their small groups.

Student Leaders and Mango Mentors
You have likely seen our student leaders out and about before school, welcoming students at the front and back drop-off and raising the flags. Our student leaders also visit classrooms during the week to share and reinforce the focus of the week with students across the school.
This week, our Mango Mentors have started supporting students in Prep to Year 3 classrooms during senior lunch time. We have some of our Mango Mentors reading with students, building connections and playing games to support wellbeing. It is so wonderful to see our Year 6 leaders making such positive contributions to the Team Mango community.
A special visit from the Premier and Deputy Mayor
On Friday, we had a special visit from the Queensland Premier, Dr Steven Miles along with the Deputy Mayor of Moreton Bay, Councillor Jodie Shipway. During their visit, the Premier and Deputy Mayor participated in a Q and A with Mr Goulding about what it’s like to be involved in parliament or a part of council, where decisions are made to support the community. What a privilege it was to have them both come out and share their personal experiences, linked to the students learning in HASS this term.
School Photos
This week, we have our school photos held in Gigum Hall. In addition to class photos, many of our students are also involved additional groups for photos include Instrumental Music, Eisteddfod Team, Choir and Student Leaders.

English Learning in Term 1
While the holidays are creeping closer, there is still plenty of time for students to learn and to apply some English skills. While reading and writing are super important skills that are developed through the study of English, we are also keen for our students to become expert speakers and listeners.
This term all students from Prep to Year 6 have been involved in a range of opportunities to build their awareness of the qualities of a good speaker and a good listener. These are skills that you can also practise at home. For example when speaking, use a voice loud enough for everyone to hear, but not so loud that others have to cover their ears. Being able to adjust our voice for the purpose and audience really matters, especially if we are trying to persuade others to our point of view. Being a good listener is just as important. For example, we need to look at the speaker, and show them we are listening by nodding, smiling and waiting for them to finish before asking a clarifying question. I wonder what topics your family likes to discuss? Who do you think is the best speaker and the best listener in your family?
Easter Borrowing
Don’t forget to visit the Hub before the upcoming holidays to make sure you have a great book to read while away from school. We have a special display of books about Easter at the moment, with plenty of bunny and bilby books to choose from. The Hub is open every morning from 8.15am and until 3pm every afternoon. Hop on in and visit soon!
Have a fantastic week
