Community News

Dear Parents and Caregivers,
Welcome back to school. We are so pleased to see our students and families back into the swing of school. I’d also like to take this opportunity to welcome our new families to our beautiful school community. Our staff are looking forward to working alongside families this year to get the best for our students. I trust everyone has had a fantastic break. I managed to spend some quality time with my family doing what makes us happy, spending time by the water, either the beach or the pool.
Thank you for preparing your child for their return to school with the stationery and uniform requirements. We have a small number of students without full black shoes and it would be appreciated if everyone could be wearing the correct uniform with pride. If any family is struggling to do this, please send us an email and the school will see how we can assist. Please email Jasmine jbenf10@eq.edu.au.
Parking will always be a little congested with such a large number of students enrolled at our school. We need your help! Please be patient, polite and follow the signed rules. Please do not park in the bus zone as this only causes traffic issues and you will be asked to move. Please also be respectful to our neighbours and park appropriately. Student safety is of paramount importance so please do the right thing. As from next week, Year 6 student leaders will be assisting with the drop off zone in the look out, therefore we encourage parents to drop and go in this zone. Please note if you are using the look out drop off and pick up zones, it is important you stay in your car.
Please see map below of the car park. This will help you decide which lane is best for you to drive in and where not to park.
Yellow line- follow this if you'rer a little early. Please do a lap and drive right through.
Green line - follow this if you are doing the drop and go option
Pink line- follow this if you are parking your car and walking into the school to collect your student from their classroom or another spot inside the school ground.
Red crosses- NO PARKING, only for buses. Please do NOT use.
Mango Hill State School is an Independent Public School (IPS) and as such is required to establish a school council. The purpose of a school council is to enable greater involvement of the school community and other stakeholders, such as industry, in setting the strategic direction for the school. The school council must perform its role in accordance with legislation and in a way that achieves the best learning outcomes for the school's students. The school council assists in monitoring the school’s strategic direction including the annual estimate of revenue and expenditure. We thank Mr Netterfield for his tenure on our school council. Unfortunately, Mr Netterfield has moved out of the area and no longer has links to the school therefore we need to elect an additional parent member. To be eligible you must:
- not be the principal of the school or the Parents and Citizens’ association (P&C) president
- be available to attend a meeting at least once per term
- have not been convicted of an indictable offence, unless the Minister gives approval under the Act (s.93)
- attend a meeting called for the purpose of electing parent members or staff members
- be the parent of a student attending the school (for elected parent member) or be a member of staff at the school (for elected staff member, and
- submit a completed nomination on time.
The general term of office for elected parent members or elected staff members is two years, although a different term may be set by the school council to create uniformity in the end dates of members’ terms of office.
If you are interested in nominating for this voluntary position, please complete the attached nomination form and email Jasmine Benfer on jbenf10@eq.edu.au by Monday 26 February.
We will be holding our Welcome Afternoon on Thursday 8 February. We are hoping to see as many families as possible. Please refer to the flyer below for details.
Communication and Facebook
At Mango Hill State School, we value effective methods of communication. Each week on a Wednesday we publish our weekly whole school newsletter. This will be sent directly to your nominated email address. We encourage you to take the time to read through the newsletter each week. Our weekly newsletter is a hub where you can find lots of information on everything that is happening in and around the school. Another great way to stay in touch with the school is by joining our official school Facebook page (please see picture of landing page below). On the school’s Facebook page, we will post important reminders, event information, updates, weekly videos from staff and best of all, some snippets of the children “Growing, Learning and Achieving”. Please note that any posts made by the school on the school’s official Facebook page are not to be snipped or screen shot and re-posted on any other community Facebook page. The school’s page is the official page, all other Facebook pages have no affiliation with the school. We appreciate your understanding and support with this matter. If you have any concerns at any time about our school, Facebook is NOT the place to post this. We want this page to remain positive. Should you need to inform us of any concerns, we encourage you to please contact the school to discuss these. Please contact Jasmine jbenf10@eq.edu.au or call 3482 8111.
Student Phone or Smart Devices
Student Phone or Smart Devices
If students choose to bring their phone to school, they must switch it off and hand it in to the office on arrival to school. Personal devices are not to be used on school grounds. Smart watches and other devices can be worn, however, must be switched off. This approach is being implemented on all QLD state schools to:
- Reduce distractions in the classrooms
- increase face to face interactions between students
- promote health and wellbeing
- reduce the potential for students to be exposed to negative impacts of the digital world, such as cyber bullying.
Should you have concerns or any issues relating to your child, please initially talk to your child’s class teacher. Should your concerns continue, please make an appointment to meet with your child’s Deputy Principal. If your concerns are still not alleviated, then it would be appropriate to make an appointment to talk to me (Principal). It’s important teachers are given the opportunity to address any issues prior to members of the leadership team being involved unless the matter is one of urgency.
Collection of Students early
We understand that from time-to-time appointments and circumstances occur where parents and carers may need to collect students early from school. While we do not encourage parents to collect students from class early, our office staff are happy to help you with collecting your child early as per the following procedure.
If you need to collect your child early from school, we are no longer taking over the phone requests to organise students to the office for a nominated time (unless in emergency situations). We now ask that you factor enough time to come into the school office when you are ready to collect your child and office staff will call them to the office from their classroom after you have been into the office to sign them out. Please take note of the break times as it is often very hard to locate a student during outside playtime as they don’t always hear their name being called over our PA system. Break times are as follows.
Senior- 10.40-11.10am
1.00-1.30pm
Junior- 10.00-10.40am
12.30-1.00pm

Back to School Information From The Road Safety Team
I am excited to be joining the Prep Team this year as the Deputy Principal for Prep. I have worked across the early years for over 20 years and am committed to supporting a strong start to schooling. It was a delight to see our Preps arrive on Monday wearing their school uniform with pride. They have done an amazing job learning new routines, making friends and sharing with us their strengths and ideas. Visiting classes and starting to make connections with you and your children has been my highlight of the week, along with seeing the highly skilled work our Prep teachers and teacher aides do on a daily basis - thank you Prep Team!
Thanks must also go to our parents for the part you play in supporting a smooth transition to school. The following things seem minor but help us enormously to start and end the day well:
- waiting behind the blue lines or gates in the mornings and afternoons
- the 'kiss and go' (a relatively quick drop off that does not prolong the goodbye)
- clear communication with your child’s teacher about how they will be travelling home each day.
Thank you for helping us in setting up these important school routines, we look forward to the learning ahead.

Leaping Into Learning
Wow! Our Year 1s have leaped into learning from the very start. We are so proud of how well they have managed the transition from Prep to Year 1 and we know this is because of the diligent efforts of our Prep teachers and our families.
The first few weeks are all about learning about our new teacher, our new classmates and our new Year 1 routines. There’s no full time teacher aide in the room in Year 1, so we have to take that little bit more responsibility for our own belongings and for being in the right place at the right time. It helps us to be independent, when our parents allow us to do the jobs we can do, for ourselves. Please let us carry our own bag and unpack our own belongings - then we know exactly where we’ve put the things that belong to us!
Before school and after school is busy! We ask that all parents wait outside our gated community and behind the blue lines on the concrete until the 8.15 and 2.30 bells. These routines are long standing “traditions” at Mango Hill and have been in place since before I arrived! It helps us to ensure the safety of all students, when our parent community follows these routines. With such large numbers of students beginning and ending the school day at the same time, it’s vital we work together to ensure smooth movement around our school.
We strongly encourage our families to use our Look Out pick up option in the afternoons. In the initial part of the year, our teacher aides walk our Year 1 students out to the front Look Out, until they develop the confidence to do this themselves. Please make sure you let your teacher know how your child is getting home each day, so we can help your child to be in the right place.
I’ve been able to pop into each room, each day and I’ve been greeted by happy, smiling faces and lovely manners. What a wonderful start to the year!

Welcome to Year 2
It was so lovely to see so many smiling faces back in classrooms and in the playground on Monday.
This week we have been:
- getting to know one another through games and activities including our class Morning Meetings.
- learning new classroom and playground routines.
- revisiting the Four Cares and establishing our classroom rules.
- diving into our new units of work to see what we already know and what our next steps are.
- enjoying our first specialist lessons with our Italian, STEM, PE and Arts teachers.
- exploring the Junior Playground and new clubs on offer at lunchtime.
Highlights from our students:
- Archie in 2F said, ‘I loved having an ice block to cool down.’
- JC in 2T said, ‘I liked doing Circle Time and finding out who was ready for learning.’
- Mason in 2F said, ‘I loved doing the whole class name search.’
- Zoe in 2T said, ‘I loved when Miss Peckham asked us what rewards we wanted in our class.’
- Charlotte in 2T said, ‘I liked decorating my name tag.’
Some reminders for morning drop off.
- Please consider using the Stop, Drop and Go in the morning. The children are really developing their confidence with drop off. Your child may be ready to independently walk themselves in and unpack at their classroom. What a great way to foster your child’s independence!
- If arriving before 8:15am, please have your child wait in the Junior Undercover Area. Just a reminder that the playground and Astro turf areas are out of bounds. Please stay away from the Year 2 classrooms until the 8:15am bell rings.
Some reminders for afternoon pick up time.
- Please ensure you have communicated with your child and their classroom teacher about how they will be getting home each day so we can help your child move to where they need to be.
- Children will walk themselves to the Lookout Zone at the front of the school at 2.30pm. This is a great way to pick up your child easily.
- Parents/carers wanting to collect their children from in the school should wait away from the classrooms. The Junior Undercover Area is a great place to wait.
- Children waiting for sibling pick up will be supervised in the Piazza until 3:00pm. Children attending Sibling Pick Up should be seated on the concrete under the shade structure opposite the uniform shop.
- Helping Hands will meet the Year 2 children in the Junior Undercover Area.

A Wonderful Start Year 3!
What a wonderful start we have made to our school year. I wanted to introduce myself to our new families and those I am yet to meet. I am looking forward to working with our families and students as the Deputy Principal of Year 3 this year. Outside of work I love all things sports, spending time with my young family and traveling around the world.
Thank you to everyone for your efforts in making our first week a success. I know everyone is very eager to get to class in the mornings, but please remember in Year 3 we must wait for the bell until 8:30 to approach our rooms. I look forward to seeing you out in the Piazza or at the front gate before and after school. Have a lovely week.

A Fantastic Start
It has been a fantastic start to 2024 in Year 4! It has been great to see students building connections within their classrooms and I have been thrilled to see so many happy faces and engaged learners as I’ve made my way around classrooms during the week.
In specialist lessons, our classes are working as a team to achieve a score out of 10 in each lesson. It was great to hear so many 10/10 scores across the cohort during their first lessons. They have set the bar high and I know they will continue to do so.
As we start the new school year, it is important to remind your children of the before school procedures. We kindly ask that Year 4 students and parents wait in the Middle Years Area, Piazza or Oval where there is supervision until the 8:30am bell, and not in front of classrooms or outside the bag racks. Our teachers are all working hard in this time before school, preparing engaging lessons for the day.
Also, if you arrive to collect your child prior to 2:45 pm you may wait in either Piazza or in the middle years area. Please be mindful not to wait directly outside a classroom or in the immediate surrounds of a classroom. This helps everyone care for learning! We appreciate your support in reinforcing these procedures with your children.
Check out the photos below from across our classrooms!

What a great first week back from the holidays!
I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself as the Deputy Principal for Year 5.
Although I am new to Mango Hill I have worked in a variety of roles as a school leader for the last decade. I am passionate about knowing our students and knowing the next steps to help them achieve. I am a strong believer in working together with families to support children and to care for the environment in which we learn.
This term, in English, students will focus on writing to entertain and to persuade. In Mathematics the focus will be on using strategies to solve problems, factors and multiples, fractions, number facts and perimeter.
Please help us reinforce school wide expectations including wearing the correct uniform, following before and after school routines and being ready to learn.
I look forward to getting to know the Year 5 students and families as the term progresses.

Welcome back to school!
It’s been a wonderful few days welcoming our Year 6 students for their final year at MHSS. Our classes have spent time getting to know each other and developing classroom structures and routines to set them up for success for the coming year. A special welcome to the new families that have joined us in 2024! After being the Deputy Principal for this cohort of students in 2021 and 2022, I am excited to once again be closely involved in their learning journey.
Over the first few weeks of Term 1, we will be reinforcing key messages with students, such as uniform expectations, before and after school waiting areas and playtime areas. A reminder to all families that students may wait in the Piazza or on the Senior Astro-turf Area (underneath the Year 5 and 6 block) before school. They can also play on the Oval or Multipurpose Court. Each day, students should have plain back shoes and plain white socks to go with their Mango Hill State School uniform. Our students have made a great start at meeting these expectations.
Many of our Year 6 students also carry a phone with them to and from school. If students are bringing their phone to school, they must sign it in at the office before school and collect it again after school. Phones may only be used once outside of the school grounds. If your child is bringing a phone to school with them, please reinforce this message with them.
I’ve enjoyed visiting classrooms over the past few days and seeing students reconnect with old friends and develop new friendships as well. Year 6 is a wonderful year where our students will make many great memories. I look forward to being a part of the journey with them and you in 2024!

Curriculum happenings for Term 1
We are so excited to be back at school, especially as we think about all of the things that we will learn in Term 1. All students from Prep to Year 6 have already begun their new English and Maths units of work. This term students will also develop their understandings in Science, Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS), and Visual Arts. Students will also have the opportunity to work with our Specialist teachers in a range of learning areas including Physical Education, Music, Performing Arts, Italian and STEM (Science and Technology).
Attached is an overview of the learnings for each year level, as well as the contact details for all of our teachers. Exploring ideas and concepts in all of the Learning areas helps us develop our smarts in lots of different ways! We look forward to sharing some of the learnings in the weeks ahead!
Borrowing from the Hub
All students will be able to visit the Hub in Week 2 to borrow a book for their reading pleasure. Choosing a book that appeals is an important part of building a positive disposition towards reading, so parents and carers might be surprised by the choices some of our students make… but as we visit the Hub each week there are plenty of other opportunities for different choices!
In order to ‘care for the environment’ and our precious library books, it would be great if all students had a special library bag when borrowing. This can be a Mango Hill library bag purchased from the uniform shop or any kind of plastic or material bag. We don’t mind what the library bag looks like, but we know it will be super important to protect our books from the other things (including lunch boxes and water bottles) in our school bags.
We look forward to seeing everyone next week!
Hub opening hours
The Hub is open every morning from 8.15am and until 3pm every afternoon. All students are welcome to visit before or after school to choose and borrow a book.
Have a fantastic week
