Dear Parents and Carers,
The school will be emailing student reports on Wednesday 6 December. On this same day, parents and carers will also receive an important email about 2024 class placements and other vital information. If we don’t have your latest email address, you won’t receive this. If you have changed your email address and haven’t informed the school office, please do so as soon as possible.
The school has worked tirelessly on formulating classes for 2024. We thank you for your anticipated support and respect of the school’s position on class placement. Where possible, we have aimed to fulfill as many parent considerations as possible but please note, it’s not always possible and it may not always be in the best interest of the student/class. Mango Hill State School teachers and leaders have valuable expertise in creating highly productive student learning groupings and environments. Many aspects are taken into consideration, including learning styles and preferences, academic ability, friendships, behaviour and special needs. The teachers and leadership team have worked hard to ensure that your child is placed in the learning environment that is best for them. Staffing in state schools is not finalised until the eighth day of school (1 February) and while every effort has been made in the organisation of classes for 2024, there is always a possibility that we may experience change and your child may be affected by this change.
Our school has been successful in obtaining a School Transport Infrastructure Program (STIP) grant to the value of $35,000 to build a bus shelter at the front of the school. The school is hoping to get this work underway as quickly as possible.
Today we held our Volunteer’s Morning Tea to thank our amazing parents, friends and family members for volunteering their time and services to our school. I understand there are many more volunteers who were unable to attend. Please know that you are appreciated and we really value all that you do for our school.

Early next year, we have been advised by Translink, that there will be changes to the 6722 bus route. The route will include some streets in the Capestone area, including Stodart Terrace. I encourage parents living in this area to log onto the transport journey planner https://jp.translink.com.au/plan-your-journey/journey-planner to see how this may assist your family. We have been advised that there will be no changes to pick up times.
As we are getting closer to the end of the year, the school has many events to celebrate the 2023 school year. These include:
Please note students are to be in full formal uniform for all awards ceremonies. Please talk to your child about this expectation. This includes: Long hair back, school coloured hair accessories, full black shoes, white socks and school approved jewellery (medical/religious) only.
Students are permitted to wear free dress for Thursday’s, Week 10, Farewell Assembly. This free dress must be sunsafe and shoes are to be enclosed.
We are looking forward to celebrating these end of year events alongside our students and their families. We do again, remind everyone, that finding a park will take time and patience. Please continue to be mindful of our neighbours when parking.
Have a wonderful week

Carols By Candlelight
In less than a week we will be celebrating the end of the year with our Carols By Candlelight event. Students in Years 1, 3 and 5 will be performing but all year levels are welcome to come along to join in the singing. We encourage everyone to wear Christmas outfits.
Families are encouraged to bring their own snacks, sit on a picnic blanket and enjoy the evening together. The mosquitoes are out and about, therefore please bring your own mozzie spray.
The following food options will be available for purchase.
- Pizzas can be pre-ordered through the Qkr! app from now until Sunday, 26 November, 8:30pm. Regular pizzas can be pre-purchased for $12 with the gluten free option charged at $14. Orders can be picked up at the Canteen between 4:30 – 5pm.
- Jamie Bayliss and the crew from Ray White Newport will be running a barbeque. Sausages will be on sale for $2.50. Cash and card are accepted here.
- The P&C will have a stall selling cold drink, chips and chocolates. Cash and card are accepted here.
This event will be held on our school oval. The main entry to this event will be via the oval steps near the Middle Years building/playground. The other entry points will be via the path past the multipurpose court and up the path coming out at the PE shed. The event will open at 4:30pm for a 5:00pm start time.
Children will need to sit with their families for the duration of the evening. Families must supervise their own children at all times during the event (unless they are performing). The playground will be strictly out of bounds.
When class group are announced, children will need to meet their teacher in the holding area to the right of the stage. Class teachers will lead students on to the stage to perform and off at the end of their song. Students will be asked to walk back to find their families at the end of their performance. If you are concerned about your child finding you, we have organised a collection point at the back of the event. Teachers will wait with students in that area if you’d prefer to collect your child there.
A copy of the words for the night can be downloaded by using the QR code below. This code will also be available on the night.
Thank you to the parents and carers who have filled in a expression of interest form to join the Instrumental Music Program next year on strings, brass, woodwind and percussion. We are still working our way through all of the expressions of interest forms as well as suitability testing for students. We had over 60 applications from current Year 2 students and approximately 50 applications from Year 3 and 4 students with a total of 35 places on offer in the strings program and another 35 places on offer in the band program. You can expect placement offers and waiting list letters at the end of Week 9. Thank you to all of the families who have applied.
Prep and Year 6 Concerts
On Monday 27 November we celebrate our Prep and Year 6 Concerts. Over the past Semester our students have been practicing their routines in preparation for a wonderful evening celebrating the Performing Arts. Earlier this week we started our rehearsals. What amazing performers we have in Team Mango! There are two rehearsals remaining, one Friday 24 November and our final rehearsal the day of the concert. Students do not require their costume at the rehearsal but should come to the concert in their costume.
Prep concert- Doors open at 5:00pm for a 5:15 start.
Year 6 concert- Doors open at 6:30pm for a 6:45pm start.
The Care Class focus that will be delivered this Friday is ‘Images of the future and character strengths”. We will be consolidating this focus throughout next week.
By imaging the future, we are Caring for Self, and thinking about what is important to us by creating a picture in our mind. Visualising this can help to achieve many things in life. Expecting the best and believing that a positive future is possible can transform one’s future.
This focus is strongly associated with a growth mindset. We will also be discussing our unique strengths and exploring what we do really well.

First Year of Learning Celebration
Week 8 is here already! How time flies when you’re having fun. Before we know it, our Prep students will have completed their first year as part of Team Mango. On Friday 1December Mango Hill State School invites you to a special parade to celebrate our Prep students first year of learning. At this parade, we will acknowledge our student’s commitment and excellence and then invite all families back to their student’s classroom to share the celebrations for a wonderful 2023.
Prep Concert
Our concert rehearsal is in full swing as we count down to our very first concert. We have two rehearsals remaining on Friday this week and Monday next week. Our students have been working hard on their routines and are looking forward to the concert evening. A reminder that doors open on 27th November at 5:00pm for a 5:15pm start. We can’t wait to see everyone in their costumes.
Playgroup
We have 2 more Playgroup sessions remaining for 2023 with our final Playgroup on 1 December. We look forward to having our community join us for our Friday morning playgroup from 8:45am - 9:45am in the Prep Under Cover area. This is a great opportunity for your children to familiarise themselves with our school and for our families to connect with each other. This is open for ages from birth to 5years. Each week we have a range of activities and toys for children to engage in. We hope to see you there.
Have a great week

We only have two and a half weeks left of Year 1! We can’t quite believe it!
We’re looking forward to Year 2 because so much of it will be the same.
Here’s our list of same:
- same play spaces
- same break times
- some of the same friends in our class
- same place to wait before and after school
- same way to buy a tuckshop treat
- same dance and music teacher
- same area of the school
- same Bump It Up and Learning Walls
- same classroom layout with working together spaces and our interactive boards.
When big changes are upcoming with our young people, it’s really important not to overwhelm them with our own big emotions. Sometimes we’re more attached to class friends and class teachers than our kids are! We take transition work seriously at Team Mango and we’re already slowing drip feeding the “same” and “different” language to our Year 1 friends. Often, things are a Big Deal because us adults make it a Big Deal.
Change is a natural part of life and we can look at each school year as a season in our own child’s life. Some years they may be more resilient than others. Some years they may have a better connection with their peers than others. Some years they may have a better connection with their teacher than others. All of this is okay and part of the learning journey of life.
Coming to school isn’t just about the academics; the engagement, the well-being, the social learning all matters too.
Over the coming couple of weeks, join us in the “drip feed” or the “drive by” as we like to say. Our children are better armed for upcoming change when we present positively and notice and name something in passing like it’s “no big deal”, bit by bit over time, rather than through one big conversation.
As you walk around the school…
“Oh look at those Year 2s walking to their rooms, that will be you soon.”
At the shops…
“I wonder what books we will need for Year 2.”
In the local community…
“I wonder if that Team Mango friend will be in your new class.”
Keep your language light and bright.
We’ve got this, Team Mango Year 1!

Number Facts in Year 2
As part of our Mathematics program across Mango Hill, students in Years 1-6 learn strategies for recalling number facts. In Year 2, we focus on teaching addition and subtraction number facts that involve building to ten, doubles, near doubles and bridge to ten.
The Building to Ten strategy involves learning the combinations of numbers that go together to make ten. These facts are sometimes called Rainbow Facts. Once children know the number combinations that make ten (4 + 6 = 10), they can apply their understandings to take numbers away from ten (10 – 6 = 4) and extend the facts (40 + 60 = 100 and 24 + 26 = 50).
The Doubles strategy is used whenever a number is doubled (6 + 6). Often these facts need to be learned by rote. Once the Doubles facts are mastered, Near Doubles can be tackled. Near Doubles are facts where the numbers are almost near to doubling (6 + 7). Students need to think about the double that the fact is near, double that number and add on one more (6 + 7 think 6 + 6 + 1).

The Bridge to Ten strategy involves doing sums in parts by adding (or bridging) to the nearest 10 and then taking things from there. For instance, when given a sum like 9 + 7, students can use the bridging through 10 method as follows 9 + 1 = 10 which leaves 6 remaining. 10 + 6 is the equivalent of 9 + 7.
Number facts are the building blocks to having strong mental computation. Regular practise is the key. Over the holidays trying using Dr Paul Swan’s Number Facts practise app to keep practicing. It can be found at this website:

Learning in Year 3
Our Year 3 classes are finalising any outstanding assessments this week. Our students will continue with learning in Week 8 and 9. In Week 10, there will still be plenty of learning experiences, however teachers will be celebrating the year together with their students. These activities bring joy and a sense of “completion” for students as they finish their year in Year 3. I know you will be feeling incredibly proud, and that is how the teachers, teacher aides and all our staff who work with our 2023 Year 3 students feel. We can’t believe how much they have grown in so many ways.
Transition to Year 4
Another strategy for any worry or wondering about the transition into Year 4 is to think back with your child about other times in their life, particularly at school, when there has been a change and everything was still fine. What did they do then to be so successful at getting use to the new classmates, the new teacher, the new bell times etc? Remembering all the times we used our strengths to thrive and grow through change gives us optimism for the future and allows us to look forward to change. We know that some students need more support through the transition to a new year level than others. Ms Tanner, our Inclusive Education teacher, is collaborating with all the Year 3 and 4 teachers to ensure students experience a successful transition. If you have any concerns, please reach out to your child’s class teacher.
Special Events
We can’t wait to be part of the Carols by Candlelight Evening on Tuesday 28 November. We’d love to see you there if your family can make it. It’s just over a week until our first Swimming Carnival for our Year 3 students. Nearly all students in Year 3 will attend the swimming carnival on Thursday 30 November. We hope to see you there.
Take care and have a wonderful week

Technology Learning in Year 4
This term in Technology, students have been creating infographics; using graphs, tables, drawings and words to communicate messages clearly. Students have been using Key Note to represent and give specific and detailed messages. Check out some of the infographics below!
Proud Clouds
As assessment is finishing, our students have been celebrating their Year 4 journeys, adventures and highlights. It has been wonderful hearing and talking to students about what they are most proud of. Some of the highlights include the new friends students have created, going on camp for the first time and overcoming fears through resilience.

Care for Learning in Year 5
This week marks the final week of assessment and reporting in our Year 5 classrooms. As I have visited classrooms this week I have observed the values of commitment and teamwork. Students and teachers have been collaborating with one another in providing last minute support and feedback to ensure that all students learn and achieve.
Student Leadership
Congratulations to all of our Year 5 students who will be delivering their nomination speech on Thursday 23 November. All of these students should be very proud of the way they have conducted themselves throughout this process so far. I am looking forward to hearing the inspirational messages that each of these leaders have to offer.
Swimming Carnival
One of the exciting events coming up is the Swimming Carnival. All students in Year 5 will attend the swimming carnival on Friday 1 December. We’d love to see you there if you are able to make it.

Year 6 Leading The Way!
Throughout the year, I have shared a consistent message to our Year 6 students that they are all leaders of our school. Their younger peers look to them to model the Team Mango Way. With under 3 weeks to go, this message to our Year 6 students remains the same. I know that our teachers continue to set high expectations inside and outside of the classroom. We encourage our Year 6 students to continue to be positive role models of Team Mango by wearing the correct uniform, working hard and showing respect to our Team Mango community. I know that they will continue to represent our school in a positive way until their final day with us!
End of Year Events
We have so many events coming up involving our Year 6 students to celebrate the end of the year! This begins tonight with our Instrumental Gala evening. Good luck to all of the musicians performing! On Monday night, we have our school concert; the final one at MHSS for our Year 6 students. Later next week, Year 6 also have their final MHSS swimming carnival. Finally, in Week 10, we will celebrate Year 6’s last days with us with their awards ceremony on Wednesday morning, Graduation on Wednesday night, the farewell parade on Thursday morning and the Year 6 “walkout” on Thursday afternoon.
Check out the photos below for a sneak peek at what we are in for at the school concert on Monday!

Accelerated Reader
This week has been super busy in the Hub as many students finish up their AR quizzing for 2023. We are so proud of all of those students who have been reading and quizzing right to the end. Many of them have reached their goals and some have set new goals for 2024! Well done everyone who has done their very best on AR this year!
Congratulations to Amelia who last week reached her goal of 2 million words! She has been working quietly and consistently all year and what a great achievement! We are very proud of Amelia and have added her photo to our special 2023 AR display.
Congratulations also to Lewis who has demonstrated such persistence and resilience to finish AR this year. This has meant that he has reached AR 9.0 – the very top of AR at Mango Hill State School! This is an outstanding achievement and we are very proud of him.
Congratulations to Amelia and Lewis!

Returning all books
All books are now due back to the Hub. We look forward to receiving all of our books so that we can sort, collate and check what we need for 2024. All lost or damaged books need to be replaced. Please check with Class teachers or our Hub staff if you need help with this task.
