Dear Parents and Carers,
Last week we held the P&C whole school disco. Thank you so much to the P&C for their organisation and a big thank you to our parents/carers for supporting this event. It’s really tricky organising these events, this is made even harder by the number of students/families we are catering for. Our P&C is always after volunteers to share the work load. If you are interested in volunteering or assisting the P&C with future events, please contact the school office and leave your details.
The winners of the lucky door prizes from the disco have been drawn. Congratualtions to the following students- Lexi M and Aubrey H. A big thank you to Jarod Faulkner from Ray White North Lakes for supplying these prizes.
Last week was World Teachers’ Day. Thank you to parents/carers who made contact with staff and to those that sent me an email outlining their thanks to our teachers for their unrelenting positive regard shown towards all students. Our teachers care and your words filled our buckets. Thank you.

Outside School Hours Care
As previously communicated, our school recently retendered our outside school hours care service. Helping Hands has been successful in gaining this service. I am meeting with Helping Hands this Friday to plan the transition moving forward. I will communicate to Helping Hands that our parents want to know how they can book in for vacation care and to the service for the 2024 school year. I also know some parents are wanting opportunities to talk to staff from the new service about their children’s individual needs.
2024 Student Leaders
We are starting to commence our Year 5 student leader shortlisting process. The first step in this process is ensure that the Year 5 students hand their Student Leader Passports in by Friday 3 November. These will then be reviewed and students will be shortlisted for group interviews. Students will be shortlisted for interviews based on how they have displayed the Mango Hill values, leadership attributes and passport application. This will take place over the next couple of weeks. Students will then be notified if they are successful to move to the next step. The next step will involve speeches. You can help your child by reminding them to ensure that their passport is handed into the office by this Friday.
I wish all student nominees the very best of luck and I thank them for having the courage to nominate.
Semester 2 Awards
We have a number of awards that will be presented at the end of Semester including the Principal Excellence Award, the Academic Excellence Award and the Deputy Principal Encouragement Award. The criteria for these awards are attached below.
Gold Badge Awards (Year 3-6)
At the end of each year, students in Year 3-6 can apply for a gold badge for academic, sport and/or cultural excellence. Thank you to those students who have nominated for these badges by filling out the application form and submitted this to the office by the due date (Friday 20 October 2023). The applications have now closed. We would now like to ask that all students who applied for a Gold Badge Award who have previously been awarded a gold badge to please return their badge back to the school office in a sealed clear clip bag with the students name (first and last) and class on it. Please see photo below for example. We asked that these be handed back to the school office by Friday 10 November 2023. Please remember this does not mean that your child’s application was successful. All students who are unsuccessful will have their badges returned back to them.
Please see below criteria for awards.
Diversity Day
Our annual MHSS Diversity Day will be celebrated at a whole school parade and followed up with Diwali activities in Care Class on Friday 10 November. Our Diversity Day parade will commence at 8:50 am for all year levels. All parents are welcome to attend.
Our community values and embraces diversity and one of the ways we celebrate this is through our annual Diversity Day parade. Class teachers will be leading Diwali activities in Care Class and may be seeking parent volunteers to assist. If you are available to volunteer, please get in touch with your child’s or children’s class teachers.
Students and parents who are from a cultural background with a traditional cultural dress are welcome to wear traditional cultural dress. All other students should wear formal school uniform for this parade. Whilst this means that not all students will be in traditional cultural dress themselves, all students share in the enjoyment of seeing some of their friends, teachers and other community members in their cultural dress. In alignment with our Term 4 theme of respect, we ask students not to attend in dress up or soccer kits etc.
2024 planning
School staff are currently involved in 2024 planning. This week, teaching staff will commence placing students into 2024 classes. Thank you to those parents for sharing information around class placements for next year. Teachers will use their knowledge of each cohort to map the best fit class/teacher for all students. The process is very involved and I appreciate your anticipated support with individual class placements.
School staff are also busy mapping out the school’s Annual Improvement Plan (AIP) for next year. The school currently has an explicit plan that carefully and deliberately maps out strategies and actions to progress student learning. We are refining this plan and deciding what actions are still needed, what actions need to stop and what actions need to be added. The AIP will be grounded in the DoE’s strategic plan, Equity and Excellence which has three focus areas: Education Achievement, Engagement and Wellbeing, and Culture and Inclusion. I look forward to sharing this AIP with the school council, P&C and wider community for feedback.
Thank you!
Again, we have had another amazing week with our motorists being patient, mindful of others and respectful by parking and dropping off in the designated zones. We have a few motorists continuing to ignore directions but the majority of our school community is doing a fantastic job. This is having an impact on easing the congestion. Well done and thank you for considering the safety or our students.
Have a wonderful week

On Tuesday 28 November we will be hosting our Carols by Candlelight event on the school oval. Gates will open at 4:30pm for a 5pm start. The idea is for this to be an informal community event where families can come along, bring some snacks, sit on their picnic blanket and join in with the singing of carols led by year level groups.
The year levels performing on the night will be Years 1, 3 and 5 but all year levels are welcome to come along and sing. Just like with the concert, classes will be grouped together to perform one song each. This is a non-compulsory, informal event so whoever turns up on the night, will get up and perform. Students will be encouraged to wear Christmas clothes.
On the night, children will sit with their families and join their class when it is time to perform. They will re-join their families at the end of their song.
We are looking forward to a wonderful evening!
The Care Class focus that will be delivered this Friday is ‘Unconditional Positive Regard’. We will be revisiting this focus and learning more about what this concept means here at Mango Hill State School.
To have unconditional positive regard towards others means expressing empathy, offering support, regardless of what the person has said or done e.g. offering compassion to people even if they have done something wrong.
Unconditional positive regard emphasizes the healing power of human connection by offering kindness to one another even if they have made a mistake.

Prep Concert
In Week 9, on 27 November we have our very first concert for our Prep students. This night is a great celebration of the hard work our students have put into their dance lessons. Our concert begins at 5:15pm with our students dancing on stage, along with performances from the Junior Choir and of course the always popular Teacher Dance. This event is held in our Gigum Hall and we would love our Prep families to join us for an exciting evening.
Representing Numbers
Over the course of the year, we have been building on our counting skills. This term we have been learning how to represent addition and subtraction problems. Over the last fortnight I have been visiting Prep J, Prep V and Prep L and Prep R who have all been representing their addition problems in multiple ways. By representing in many ways, our students are provided with strategies to best solve each problem they encounter. How clever are our students using these different representations to solve problems!
Have a great week

It’s Crunch Time!
The learning year is on the downward slide - we’re cramming every small bit of learning, into every available minute.
It’s getting hot and we’re all tired!
How can you help your Year 1 make it to the end of the school year?
* Keep packing those healthy lunches, with food that will sustain your child through the whole day
* Pack a full water bottle each day
* Hats, hats, hats! To and from school please + each lunch break
* Early to bed - as much sleep as possible is needed now
* Rest, rest, rest - as much as possible, after school and on weekends
* Outside time! Nature helps us all to reset.
* Low key connection time together; read those books and lock the screens away
It’s a team effort! Let’s work together to make the remainder of Year 1 successful for our Year 1 friends.
Have a great week

Learning All About Time in Year 2
Not only are the students in Year 2 exploring calendars and seasons, they are also learning to tell the time to the quarter hour using the language of ‘past’ and ‘to’. They are learning how to show times on analogue and digital clocks as well as read times that are written in words.
Some ways you can help your child to learn about time are as follows.
- Note the time of day you do particular things with your child (e.g. What time do we wake up, have breakfast, drive to school, go to bed?)
- Note how long events take by discussing their duration using the words minute, hour, week, month and year.
- Try drawing your child’s attention to clocks in their world (e.g. clocks on their iPad, phones, car, wall clocks, T.V., computer screens). Ask your child to read the o’clock, half past and quarter to/past times on these different types of clocks.
Checkout these superstars in 2M and 2P. They’ve made large analogue clocks on their classroom floors and have used their bodies to make different times.

Day for Daniel
Last Friday, Year 2 was a sea of red for Day for Daniel. In Care Class teachers discussed the 3Rs which are recognise, react and report. Students will revisit the 3Rs again later in the term within our Health unit.
Have a wonderful week

Learning in Year 3
It has been such a pleasure to visit classrooms this week and see the many ways our Year 3 classes are using digital learning. In 3C, students and Ms Gough used Socrative to support their Math warm up and to help Ms Gough understand the “sticking” points for some of her lovely friends in Money. In 3L, students and Ms Whitta used an online thesaurus to help them choose words that bumped up their poetry eg yummy crunchy muesli became scrumptious crunchy muesli and fine became five-star.
Friendship in Year 3
What a celebration of friendship was our school disco! Fun all round as we dressed up and danced, played games, chatted with friends, and then got to relive it all when our parents collected us. The Year 3 team appreciate all the parents who planned, dropped off, visited the Piazza (or did a soccer run etc) and came back all smiles to collect the dancers. We know not everyone can make it to every event, so we now look forward to our other events and hope to see you at one of them.
Whole school parade
Our next opportunity to welcome our parents is our whole school parade on Friday 10 November. This parade marks our own Team Mango Diversity Day. Parade will start at 8:50 and will feature a performance by Rhythm Nation. You are most welcome to join us!
Take care and have a wonderful week

Care for Learning in Year 4
The purpose of this term's writing unit for Year 4 is to create an engaging argument to persuade your audience to take action.
Throughout the unit, our students have been learning how to structure a persuasive text, using the TEER structure for their paragraphs, as well as purposefully using a range of language features including text connectives, rhetorical questions, evaluative noun groups, verbs with high modality, figurative language and a range of sentence types for effect. Our teachers have been working hard to support students to understand the purpose of their text and how authors make deliberate choices in text, language and structure, to appeal to a particular audience.
While visiting classrooms, I have had students present their arguments to me on a wide range of topics. Students have been very persuasive, evoking feelings and using examples to really argue their point of view!
Have a wonderful week

Student Leader Passports
A reminder that Friday 3 November is fast approaching and this is the due date for the Student Leader Passports. If a student would like to be considered for a leadership position they need to have the passport completed and submitted to the office by the end of this date. Please encourage your child to work through the process of completing the passport. We look forward to building their ability to be leaders in our school. Our next step will be to interview all the students next week that have nominated for a leadership position and use this to shortlist our candidates.
Attendance
It’s so important for your child to attend school each day they are well enough. Students are impacted by absences, in their learning, in their relationships and sense of belonging at school, and in their routines. If your child is experiencing attendance issues, please reach out to your child’s teacher so we can work in partnership with you for your child’s best outcomes.

Learning in Year 6
Walking past 6R during the week, you’d be forgiven for thinking it was August and that you’d need to rug up expecting the chilly winds, with a real EKKA type atmosphere coming out of the classroom. As a part of their unit on Chance and Probability, 6R designed games for a mini-EKKA that they held in their classroom. Students had to consider if the games were fair or if they privileged certain outcomes by design. What a fun and exciting, real-world learning experience created by Mrs Robinson!
6D were also working on Chance and Probability this week. They were recording outcomes from chance experiments and recording them in a table and then in a graph. Students then compared the observed frequency of chance events against the expected frequency of chance events to determine if the chance event or game was fair. Good luck trying to get an ‘unfair’ chance event or game past 6D!
6D are taking off!
Over the next few weeks, Mrs Drummond and 6D will be doing a mini-unit using drones. Last week I visited their first lesson in the Wandani Centre, where students were learning the basics about safe flying of drones. From what I saw, there were a number of students who’ve flown them before! I know Mrs Drummond has some engaging challenges lined up for 6D to complete in coming weeks using the drones.
Debating
Our Year 5 and 6 debating teams have their final round of debates held at Ascot State School tonight. The Mango Hill Debating Team have represented themselves and the school very well at every competition, demonstrating respect, teamwork and excellence. While doing debating, our students have developed their public speaking skills and learned how to respond to the opposing team’s arguments respectfully and using evidence. Having watched the previous debates, I have been so impressed with how our students quickly think on their feet to confidently present counterarguments.
We wish the debating team good luck at their final debate for the year this evening!
Year 6 Graduation
Our next Graduation Committee meeting is scheduled for Thursday the 2 November at 5pm (tomorrow!). Following this, information including how to order food as well as formal invitations will begin to be sent out to families.
A reminder that graduation will be on Wednesday 6 December, with arrival between 5-5:30pm with the ceremony beginning at 5:30pm. Parents of students will be invited to the event and will need to RSVP.
Following the ceremony, students and their parents will be able to enjoy dinner (Subway, Sushi or Dominoes), dancing, lawn games and dessert!
We are looking forward to celebrating this important milestone with all students and their parents.
Please take a look at these photos.

Accelerated Reader
Well done to all of those students who have continued to focus on their AR goals over the last couple of weeks. There is still plenty of time to read and quiz! Even if you only take small steps towards your goal, you will get there in the end!
Congratulations to Lucy who reached her goal of 4 million words late last week. This is an outstanding effort and is a result of Lucy’s commitment and resilience throughout the whole of 2023. We are very proud of her efforts and have added her photo to our special AR display in the Hub. Great work Lucy!
Scholastic Bookclub
Our bookclub orders arrived last week and have now been distributed to the students. Please let us know as soon as possible if your order did not arrive.
Special thanks to Meaghan B and Emma W for their help with the distribution of the books. Thanks also to everyone who so generously supported our school by purchasing books. We really appreciate you!
Have a fantastic week
