Congratulations to our Wakakirri Team
I had the pleasure of attending Wakakirri on Monday night. It was the first time I have attended such an event. I loved every moment of it. Our team told a story of change through a performance called ‘Struggles to Strength’. Congratulations to the Mango Team for winning two awards – ‘the Lead Cast award for performance in dancing and acting’ and ‘the Spirit of Wakakirri’. To say I was proud of our team, is an understatement. I saw happy, healthy, talented and connected students dance as one. The performance was an absolute stand out. These events are not possible without parent volunteers, so I pass on my thanks to our amazing parents who assisted our team. A huge thank you also to Mrs Kostoglou and Miss Sheehan for their inspirational and clever choreography. These teachers have dedicated so much of their time to this event. Thank you also to Mr Vlieg for helping on the day.

Next Wednesday and Thursday we will hold our annual Father’s Day stall. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to purchase a gift for their Dad or other precious loved one. Students will attend the stall with their class. Gifts range from $1 to $6.
We are looking for assistance from some parents. If you can help for an hour or two at the stalls, please sign up at https://volunteersignup.org/8PYM3
Children love to see their parents helping and showing how much they value our school. Please assist if you can!
Have a wonderful week

Pace Classrooms 2024
As we continue our journey in the redesign of the Mango Hill State School Reach Framework our goal is to continue to enhance and enrich the learning and wellbeing of high ability learners but broaden and recognise the scope of enrichment opportunities being offered across the school.
In 2024 we will move to Pace Classroom placements; these classes will no longer be called Reach. Using a range of data sets students are identified for the Pace classroom placement as they tend to be learning at a faster pace than their peers. These students often require less repetition in most areas of the curriculum; therefore, they tend to move through the learning at that faster pace. This allows for enriched learning opportunities such as Personal Projects with a focus on going deeper in the learning.
Pace classrooms are designed to meet the differentiated needs of students demonstrating very high academic achievement in multiple learning areas. To further ensure we continue to support the wellbeing and connection of our learners, Pace classrooms will be engaging in collaborative learning experiences and curriculum areas with their fellow peers from neighbouring classes, that is another exciting opportunity for our students. It is very important to acknowledge that Mango Hill State School has many very high achieving students across each and every classroom. Through quality curriculum design and collaborative approaches all teachers in all classrooms modify the learning journey, catering for the needs of each child, based on ongoing student data and engagement to stretch, enrich and provide every opportunity for all students to reach their potential.
2024 Pace Classroom Identification Process
Data collected by class teachers, support personnel and parents are triangulated and utilised to identify individual students who may require curriculum modification and inclusion in the Pace Classroom Placement and/or provided enrichment and extension opportunities under the wider Pace Framework. A combination of subjective and objective measures is utilised in the identification of students to inform classroom selection and further enrichment and extension.
These data sources include
Whilst there is one Pace classroom in each year level, Mango Hill State School ensures inclusive programming and curriculum design for all students through rigorous moderation and differentiated learning opportunities. Each year, Pace class placements are reviewed based on current student data sources. We are excited to be on this journey and look forward to continuing to enhance and enrich the learning of all our students at Mango Hill State School.
The Care Class focus that will be delivered this Friday is ‘Unconditional Positive Regard’. We will also be consolidating this focus next week.
In classrooms this week we will be learning about what it means to have unconditional positive regard towards others. Students will begin to understand that this means expressing empathy, offering support, regardless of what the person has said or done e.g. offering compassion to people even if they have done something wrong.
Unconditional positive regard emphasizes the healing power of human connection by offering kindness to one another even if they have made a mistake.
Enrolments are now open for students attending Year 7 in 2024 at Mango Hill State Secondary College. Information regarding enrolments, including submitting an enrolment enquiry to access the enrolment application form, can be found on the College Website.
We encourage all future families to complete their enrolment application no so as to ensure all of our future students are able to attend our first Transition event on Wednesday 13 September (Week 10). Students must be enrolled to attend Transition.
There are two enrolment sessions remaining this term to support completion of the enrolment process ahead of the first transition event. These are Thursday 24th August and Thursday 7 September. Submit your application for enrolment ahead of these events so as to secure a enrolment interview this term.
Year 7 Future Scholars 2024
Are you a Year 6 student who enjoys being a problem solver and ‘out of the box’ creative thinker? Do you enjoy facing learning challenges and collaborating with other learners? Then Future Scholar is for you!
Applications for our Year 7 Futures Scholars class for 2024 are now open on the Mango Hill State Secondary College Website.
Future Scholars aims to build adaptable, resilient learners through igniting curiosity in critical local and global contexts. Students will engage in deeply collaborative experiences, developing problem-solving, critical and creative thinking, and self-reflection, towards personal goals and pathways for tomorrow.
Applications, including submission of digital entry projects, close 15 September 2023.
Positional Language to Describe Location
Over the past weeks our Prep superstars have been learning how to use the appropriate language to describe location in maths. We have been using our positional language to describe and explain the position of everyday objects. By playing different games, sharing scenarios, and even drawing pictures, we have been able to represent our understanding. This language is important to help our students with their communication skills, ability to follow directions and cognitive development.
Please check out our photos below.

Understanding Regulation
Through our Care Classes we’ve been working hard to understand regulation and what it means to be a regulated human in the world. In Year 1, there’s been some Big Feelings recently and this Care Class work has helped us to help ourselves and our friends to be their best at school.
We are very proudly an inclusive school; if you’re in our catchment, you’re welcome to join Team Mango! We’re diverse; with many different cultural backgrounds, social needs and disabilities.
We’re a family. And like any family who spend a great deal of time together, sometimes our Big Feelings can get the better of us! Plus, we’re kids - so we’re bound to make mistakes. We work hard to reflect on our choices so that if there’s something we can change, we can try to do better next time.
You can help to support us at home by doing the following.
* asking open ended questions, “tell me about” - this helps our kids to learn to share in their own words
* helping our child see the world from all perspectives, “I wonder how Sam felt when you said he couldn’t play?”
* promoting kindness, always. “You don’t have to be best friends with everyone, but we do expect you are kind to everyone.”
* acknowledging Big Feelings by noticing and naming these feelings and talking them through, “I can see you’re frustrated. How can I help?”
* modelling self-care, “Gosh, that was tricky, I’m going to need some big, deep breaths to regulate.” Or perhaps, “Today was a tough day for me, I’m going to have a shower to relax.”
We don’t always get along, in families, in friendship groups, in life. But we can always learn the skills needed to manage conflict and to be kind to everyone.
Have a great week

The Ready Scale in Year 2
The children in Year 2 have spent the last three Care classes learning all about our new whole school Ready scale.
What’s the purpose of a Ready scale?
A Ready to Learn scale is a prompt to support students to check in on their internal world of sensations and emotions. If students are not yet ready to learn, this is an opportunity to support them to label strong emotions or sensations. Next we can offer strategies for de-escalating the stress response so that they can get back into the learning – Berry Street Education Model.
Ultimately, we want students to be able to recognise, name their feelings and choose a strategy to help them de-escalate when they feel stressed. The Ready scale gives students a way to name how they are feeling. In Care Class we have been exploring strategies that can help students feel more regulated.
Look at these students from 2I who have been drawing how they look and feel when they are at a 5 on the Ready scale.

The children in 2I have also identified the following strategies to help them feel more regulated: draw, sing, go for a walk, cuddle a Squishmallow, do yoga, do some breathing, count and jump on the trampoline.

Book Week Parade
We are very much looking forward to our Year 2 Book Week parade on Friday. Please join us at 11:00am in Gigum Hall for a parade of costumes. At this parade, children are invited to dress up as their favourite book characters. We’d love children to bring along a copy of the book their character comes from to share at this parade.
Have a wonderful week

Deputy Principal- Year 2

Learning in Year 3
Our Year 3 students are in the thick of assessments this week. Teachers continue to make reasonable adjustments during the assessment tasks so that all students can showcase the best of their learning. Teachers also ensure that students are having lots of Ready to Learn breaks. That way, students can get a social break, a movement break or some other cognitive break. Do you know our teachers make very deliberate decisions about the sort of Ready to Learn break the class will take? Sometimes, the teacher may want to lift the mood or energy, at other times the teacher sees that students need to moderate the energy, excitement or restlessness in the group. I have included some photos of learning in Year 3 this week. Check out our engaged learners!

Friendships
If your child is having trouble finding a friend at break time, encourage them to try out the lunchtime Clubs. Our clubs are led by teachers and students are all joining in on a common interest. It’s a great way to meet or even just catch up with a friend in another class. If the issue is ongoing, please make a time to discuss this with your child’s teacher. Our upcoming parent teacher meetings are a possible opportunity. For longer meetings, please request a special meeting time with your child’s teacher.
Attendance
It’s so important for your child to attend school each day they are well enough. Students are impacted by absences, in their learning, in their relationships and sense of belonging at school, and in their routines. If your child is experiencing attendance issues, please reach out to your child’s teacher so we can work in partnership with you for your little one’s best outcomes.
Book Week Parade
Yay, we are counting down to Friday! Parents, you are invited to attend the Year 3 Book Week parade this Friday 25 August at 11:45 am. We’ll be parading around, showing off our Book Week costumes. Please see parade details in this newsletter.
Take care and have a wonderful week

Traditional Tales
This term, Year 4 have read and written traditional tales based in Asia. Students have learned how many tales include a moral or lesson that becomes clear in the end. They have been cleverly working away for the past 6 weeks at creating their own tale that teaches an important lesson. It has been inspiring to read some of the incredible work from our Year 4 authors recently!
Check out these photos!

Book Week
We love Reading!!! On Friday, we are celebrating Book Week with our year level parade in Gigum Hall starting at 10:00 am. Reminder to students to dress as a favourite character from a book. Lots of students bring the book with them, but you can also take a colour copy of the book cover if the book is precious. All parents are welcome to attend the parade and see us as we honour books.
Stay and Play
On Tuesday 29 August our Year 4 classes are hosting a Stay and Play from 2:15 – 2:45 pm. You will receive further information from your child’s class teacher, so please keep an eye out for this.
Have a wonderful week

Year 5 Authors
This week our Year 5 authors are busy finishing off their writing pieces for their assessment. They have worked diligently to create an imaginative text that maintains a consistent mood and point-of-view in response to a stimulus. I visited 5F during the week and enjoyed watching students work collaboratively in small groups to brainstorm many language features that matched the given mood. I saw wonderful examples of idioms, hyperboles, similes and personification! The discussion and creativity amongst the groups was exciting to see. Following on from the group activity, students were able to take their new learning and use it to bump up their own writing. Well done Ms Faulkner and 5F!

Learning in Year 6
This week I had the pleasure of visiting 6D during a Maths lesson where they were exploring 3D shapes and their properties. Students are working towards designing their own complex shape and describing this shape based on their properties including the number of faces, edges and vertices they have. 6D spent time analysing a variety of 3D shapes, pulling them apart and exploring the 2D shapes that combine to create the 3D shape. I look forward to seeing some of the complex 3D designs that students create by combining multiple 3D shapes.
Yesterday, I spent some time in 6H as they began a unit learning how to calculate percentage discounts; a valuable life skill! Miss Hutton worked with Mrs Vaf to get an understanding of the students prior knowledge on this concept, before dividing them into groups to teach to their area of need. The students in 6H were able to walk away with a clear understanding of the process for calculating percentage discounts and some resources that can help them with doing this in the future. Well done 6H!

Student Leaders
A special shout-out to our student leaders who do a wonderful job every week visiting classes to share and promote the focus of the week and to collect Golden Tickets from classrooms. Every Friday our student council meet to discuss upcoming events and what they can do to continue to make Team Mango a great place to be. Thank you, student leaders, for all that you do for Team Mango!

Updated AR Webpage
Our Accelerated Reader webpage has recently been updated to a new and improved site. When students next log in they will be automatically prompted to go to the new web page. Don’t forget to save the new link and to delete the old shortcuts. We have created a new QR code to help students find their way to the new site.
Students should continue to log in with their previous username and password, and should now be able to continue quizzing! Please let Class teachers know if there are any issues with the new site.

AFLQ Schools Cup Brisbane North-Wide Bay Finals
The MHSS AFL teams last week competed at the AFLQ Schools Cup Brisbane North-Wide Bay Finals. This day comprised the winners of each regional AFLQ Schools cup competition day so both teams were going to be up against some of the best schools in Queensland.
For the girls this was their first attempt at this level of competition. Great commitment at training had the girls excited and raring to go to represent Team Mango. Unfortunately, results didn’t go our way with 2 losses in the pool games which included an agonising 8-6 loss to St Thomas. This led to a Qtr. final payoff against Yeronga State School. Yeronga proved too strong for our girls and we were bundled out of the competition.
All of the girls performed extremely well as a team and we are very proud of their efforts. The commitment shown by these students to not only attend the day, but also to participate in training after school is a credit to them and their families.
The boys were now in their 3rd year at the Brisbane North-Wide Bay Finals. While we had a couple of early losses, the boys played very well and were competitive. We then won our quarter final game convincingly. Unfortunately, we were outplayed in the semi-final game, with the ultimate winner of both pools progressing to the State Titles.
Coaches look forward to next year when the current team’s year 4 and 5 students compete again building on from this years’ experience.
