Welcome, Ms Padgett
Today we welcome our new Principal, Mrs Ange Padgett. She is substantive principal of Burpengary State School and has been appointed at MHSS as a result of Tracy Egan’s new role. Mrs Padgett has hit the ground running and your child may have already met Mrs Padgett throughout the day.
Members of our leadership team and a number of our class teachers already know Mrs Padgett through MHSS collaboration with some of our local schools as the Critical Friend Network. Our schools won a Showcase award last year for the innovation and impact of this collaboration. We are excited to continue learning from Mrs Padgett.
Our awards in Years 1, 2, 3 and 5 continue this week, and we have our second day of 2024 Prep enrolments. We encourage you to refer back to the Term 3 Parent Overview included in our Term 2 Week 10 newsletter to stay on top of your date claimers.
School Opinion Survey
Remember that the annual suite of School Opinion Surveys will be conducted in Term 3 and will close on 18 August 2023. All families, school staff and students in Year 5 and 6 will be invited to participate. We encourage you to take this opportunity to have your say about what our school does well, and how we can improve.
An invitation to complete the Parent/Caregiver Survey will be emailed to one parent/caregiver per family in the week beginning 17 July. The invitation will be sent from the Department of Education, not the school, and it will have the subject line School Opinion Survey for parents and caregivers, 2023. Check your junk email folders if you can’t find it. The survey can be completed as soon as the invitation is received and will take approximately 5 minutes using a computer, tablet or smart phone.
Parents/caregivers who do not have access to the internet at home are welcome to speak with our office staff to arrange a time to complete their survey online at the school on a school iPad.
Have a wonderful week

SPORTING SCHOOLS TERM 3
There will be a free afterschool sporting program for students who would like to try a new sport, starting Week 4 and ending Week 8. Both the Prep – Year 2 program (Thursdays) and Years 3 – 6 program (Tuesdays) will be learning the game of golf. Be quick as there’s only 20 spots in each program! See the office for sign up forms and further details below.
The Care Class focus that will be delivered this Friday is ‘What makes me stressed’. We will also be consolidating this focus throughout next week.
We will be learning about ‘what stresses you’, ‘how you feel when you are stressed’ and ways we can manage our stresses. In Care Class we will identify family, school and friendship things that can make us stressed. Each of us differ in both what makes us stressed and how we respond to it. Students will discuss various techniques to help with stress management.
Changes to Payment Window
Please note due to a change in staffing the Payment window will no longer be open on Monday mornings.
Payments can be made anytime via QParents, BPoint, and Qkr! and at the window Wednesday and Friday Mornings 8:00 am to 9:00 am.

Bumping Up our Writing
Mrs V’s class this week were super busy learning how to persuade others by sharing their opinions about the stories they have been reading in class. This week they read the story ‘The Grufallo’ and then generated ideas using a mind map to list all their likes and dislikes about the story. Then Mrs V showed the students how to create a 4 star poster sharing her opinion and telling the reader they should go to the Hub and borrow it today! When it was time for Prep V students to have a go, they did a wonderful job using the mind map and the Bump It Up wall to create their own poster sharing their opinions with others. They were so clever that Mrs V couldn’t help but share their great ideas back to the class and putting some of them up on display in her room.
It is always such a celebration to see the students' clever ideas going up on display. They get very proud of seeing their ideas be acknowledged and celebrated!

Awards Ceremony
We did so well at our very first awards ceremony yesterday in Year 1. Heaps of us missed out - it was our first turn at this awards thing - but even though we may have missed out for ourselves, we were so happy for our friends! We were cheering and clapping for them with such excitement. We showed such incredible teamwork and pride for our classmates, that everyone got golden tickets galore after parade for showing such sensational kindness, respect and care.
Hats
We’re still reminding our Year 1 poppets daily to bring their hat and wear their hats. I think I sound like the world's biggest nag every lunch break! “Put your hat on!” “No hat? Go to the undercover area!” It’s just so incredibly important that our children learn how to be sun safe from a young age. If your child wears their hat to and from school, it helps to show them that wearing a hat outdoors is super important to you as their parents and carers. Do they wear hats outdoors at home? In my family I do almost wear a badge of “Sun Safety Queen”… we’re the ones outdoors with our full brimmed hats and at the beach with our sun safe swimmers. And yes, my own poppets do ask, “Can I wear a cap?” And yes, it’s tricky to reinforce the sun safe rules at times. However, in our climate it’s vital our children understand being sun safe is as essential as being road safe and being water safe.
You can help support us at school by ensuring your child has a hat on their heads when they leave your care in the mornings. Chat to them about why sun safety is important (and why we “nag” about the hat wearing so much) and why we can’t allow them to run around in the outdoors for 30 minutes at a time without a hat on. Of course six year olds want to play, where they want to play - but it’s our collective job to keep them safe - and this means, wearing a hat or playing undercover.
Have a lovely week.
Have a great week

Exploring Fractions in Year 2
This term the students in Year 2 have started exploring fractions. In particular, they are learning all about halves, quarters and eighths. They are learning to cut shapes into these fractions as well as use these fractions when talking about collections.
Check out the children in 2O and 2P who have been using manipulatives to explore halves in their classroom.

Ways you can help at home...
- Noticing halves/quarters/eighths in the kitchen e.g. half a glass of water, a quarter of a sandwich, an orange cut into eighths.
- Folding things in half/quarters/eighths like towels, paper and clothing.
- Cutting things into halves/quarters/eighths like bread, fruit, magazine pictures. Talk about if the parts look the same and are fair and equal.
- Filling up containers half way e.g. ‘Can you fill the bath up half way tonight?’
- Divide collections of things into halves/quarters/eighths e.g. ‘Can you share the packet of M&Ms between the four people in our family?’
Making these connections at home to learning at school helps strengthen children’s understanding of these early maths concepts.
Have a wonderful week

Gowth Mindset
This term, our theme is Growth Mindset. In Care Class we learned more about what it means to have a growth mindset and we learned the power of YET! As in, I am not great at fractions/handball/forgiving yet. We know that with effort and intention, we can always get closer to our goals. If we show ourselves that understanding, our next step can be understanding our friends, family and teachers are also on a learning journey.
Learning in Year 3
This term in Math, our big purpose is to solve real world problems using multiplication and division. Students are not using a Math scale this term, rather teachers and students are unpacking the language of the Australian Curriculum together. Across the term, we are also learning about measurement, fractions and decimals and location and transformations.
Communication
A reminder that all Year 3 class teachers email home a class newsletter once a fortnight. This email is full of updates, reminders and other great information.
Awards Ceremony
Tomorrow, it’s our turn for our Awards Ceremony starting at 8:45 am. You will have received an email invitation if your child is receiving an award. Of course, all parents are welcome to attend. If your child asks why they didn’t receive an award, encourage them to set a goal of achieving an award in Semester 2. The Principal’s award which recognises effort, behaviour and uniform is a great one to aim for.
Take care and have a wonderful week

Learning in Year 4
This term in Maths, Year 4 are learning all about fractions! I have been so impressed by the level of engagement and enthusiasm from our students while visiting classrooms this week. I have seen students representing fractions in different ways including on a number line and using diagrams, with some students even being challenged to convert between improper fractions and mixed numbers! What a talented group of mathematicians we have in Year 4!
In Science, our Year 4 scientists are learning about the key processes in the water cycle and how water cycles through the environment. Our students are very excited about their upcoming excursion to Bunyaville, where they will get to see examples of water cycling through the environment, amongst other things. As a part of their exploration of the water cycle, our classes have set-up an investigation over the past week looking at terrariums.
Year 4 Awards Ceremony
Congratulations to all Year 4 students who received an award at our Awards last Friday. How fabulous for those students to enjoy the acknowledgement of the peers on all their special efforts. It was wonderful to have so many parents and friends attend too. I encourage every Year 4 student to strive for an award this semester.

Care for Learning in Year 5
Thank you to all of the Year 5 classes that invited me into their classrooms this week to observe their great work. It is great to see the engagement of our students and observe the coming together of the Bump-It-Up-Walls. These tools within the classroom allows students to develop clarity of success in writing. This term, our Year 5s are creating an imaginative text that maintains a consistent mood and point-of-view in response to a stimulus. Our teachers have been unpacking what this means for our students and what this might look like.
Awards Ceremony
This Friday is our Year 5 awards ceremony, recognising student effort and achievement from Semester 1. The ceremony will be in Gigum Hall from 8.45am. Students are encouraged to be in full formal uniform for the event. I look forward to celebrating a successful Semester 1 with everyone.

Learning in Year 6
It’s a unique week for our Year 6 cohort this week, with half of our classes at camp and the other half at school.
At school, our students have begun their new English unit on creating a multimodal advertisement to persuade a target audience. So far, I have seen students using persuasive language to convince their audience to go to Movie World, experience ziplining, visit the aquarium and participate in high ropes, along with many more. To be successful in this unit, students need to carefully select the language they use, and use a range of sentence types for effect.
I visited 6D during a Maths lesson this week where they were practising the multiplication and division of decimal numbers by powers of 10. After consolidating this skill, students used their iPads to create a poster to teach this skill to others.

Tallebudgera Camp
6L, 6R, 6B and 6W have had an amazing start to their week at camp. Although the weather was a bit wet early in the week, the smiles remained bright! Camp is a fantastic opportunity for our students to be stretched out of their comfort zone and develop their independence, while in a safe and supported environment. I know our students will come back from their camp experience with some new skills, increased confidence and wonderful memories.

Have a great week

Learning about ourselves in Health
Throughout Term 3 all of our students from Prep to Year 6 will be involved in learning about themselves as part of their Health unit. Health is a part of the HPE syllabus and these units allow us to focus specifically on these important understandings.
In Prep students will identify actions that help them to be healthy and physically active and in Year 1 students will consider how their body reacts to different physical activities. In Year 2 students will begin to explore how our strengths and achievements contribute to our identities, and also learn how we can all ask for help when we need it. Our Year 3 students will explore all things related to bike safety and in Year 4 students will identify some strategies and choices for healthy eating. In Year 5 students will investigate how important people and the media influence our identity, and in Year 6 students will explore how drink products contribute to our health.
All of these topics are so important for our students as they develop their understandings related to healthy choices. Perhaps at home you will be able to continue the conversations about the choices we make every day which may or may not contribute to our health and wellbeing.
Book Week Competition
This term we will celebrate all things books with Book Week. As part of our Book Week celebrations we are holding a special Book Week Competition. We will have lots of super prizes and would love everyone to enter. Even though the entries are not due until 25 August, you might like to start thinking about your ideas now!
Premier’s Reading Challenge
Don’t forget it is not too late to start the PRC! All completed Reading Record forms should be returned to the Hub!
Accelerated Reader
Congratulations to Evie who this week reached her goal of 1 million words. Evie is an avid reader and has done so well to stay focussed and committed to her goal throughout the year. We were very happy to add her photo to our special AR Millionaires display in the Hub.
This week we also celebrated with Chris, who after many years of reading and reading and reading, finished AR. This means Chris has successfully reached AR 9.0. This is a very special achievement and we are very proud of him! Now he will be able to continue his reading journey, but he will be able to choose AR books at any level.
Perhaps now is a great time for everyone to set some AR goals. Would your children like to reach a particular level or read a specific number of books? There is always someone in the Hub to help find the perfect book so we look forward to seeing you soon!
The Hub is open every day from 8.15am and until 3pm every afternoon.
Have a fantastic week
