Safe Travel
Last week the Safe Travel Committee met again to discuss how we can ensure safety for students travelling to and from school. The Safe Travel Committee is made up of representatives from MBRC including Cr Shipway, staff from TMR, the P & C and Department of Education. We discussed further possibilities and currently have engineers drawing up possible plans for a number of initiatives.
Yesterday a student had an accident on their scooter riding home from school. The student was hit by a car and thankfully is okay. Staff have reinforced with students the importance of road safety, particularly stopping and looking both ways before crossing roads. Please discuss and reinforce this with your children.
Well done to Jacob, Emerson and Taylah for scooting to school safetly with their helmets on.

Community Consultation
As mentioned last week, we are very keen to consult with parents regarding a range of school policies that have been reviewed this year. Thank you to the parents who have made contact to express interest. Below are further details.
Reach Selection Process and Gifted & Talented Policy
On Monday the 7September we will be providing two opportunities for parents to learn more and provide feedback on the Reach Selection Process and the MHSS Gifted and Talented Policy.
Reach classrooms have been part of MHSS class placements for a number of years. This year we have worked collaboratively with staff to create a process that provides transparency and clarity to our families around how class placements for Reach are created. In this meeting we will discuss how informed decisions are made each year about the students selected for the Reach classrooms.
The Gifted and Talented Policy consultation will provide an opportunity to learn about the process for identifying students as gifted and talented and the learning opportunities within our school to support identified learners. It has been aligned to EQ policy and Mango Hill State School inclusive learning opportunities within and beyond the classroom.
We look forward to seeing you on the Monday 7 September for your feedback.

Push up Challenge
One baby every 4 days is born with Cystic Fibrosis.
“The Neverrest challenge was born out of a need to take action to support Nathan Clarence who had CF. He passed away in January 2019 aged 40. He lived an inspiring life, constantly pushing himself to get the most out of himself despite his illness. We hope to honour his memory by inspiring others to get the most out of their lives through the Neverrest challenge.” Sean Clarence
This year they wanted to get the entire CF community involved. This is about everyone contributing something special. One million people in Australia carry the CF gene. Most people have no idea. So Nathans’ brother has set a challenge for everyone to contribute to the target of One Million push ups in 24 hours. Our school community will be doing 10 push ups each on Thursday morning to contribute to the 1 million push ups. This is not about raising money but awareness for CF. We will have our annual Go Red for CF day in November this year.
Have you Booked your Parent Teacher Interview?
A reminder that parent teacher interviews start next week. All parents are offered the opportunity to meet with your child’s teacher to hear about student progress and next steps. The booking for these interviews closes Thursday. Please book via SOBS
https://eq.sobs.com.au/pt3/parent.php?schoolid=70371
We look forward to collaborating and partnering with parents to provide positive outcomes for each child.
Stay Safe!
A reminder that we must not become complacent despite the low community transmission. Please continue to socially distance if you need to come on site. If your child is unwell, please keep them at home!
Student Free Day Friday
A reminder that this Friday is a student free day. I hope your children and family have a wonderful long weekend!
Have a wonderful week

Focus of the Week
The focus introduced on Friday and carried on throughout this week is ‘Regulating Our Feelings.’ Regulating our feelings is the ability to control and manage feelings and emotions. It is a learnt skill that with practice can become routine. When we are able to regulate our emotions, we are more likely to have success socially and academically. Being able to regulate our feelings helps us to be happy health humans.
When I care for self, I use appropriate strategies to regulate my feelings
When I care for learning, I use appropriate strategies to regulate my feelings so that I can be ready to learn.
When I care for others, I use appropriate strategies to regulate my feelings so I react appropriately with others.
Here is a helpful clip about regulation of feelings https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m4UGDaCgo_s

First Aid Training
This week our Years 6, 5 and 4 classes participated in their annual First Aid awareness training. These sessions are aimed at providing students with skills and knowledge of what to do in an emergency. As our children grow and enter different situations, for example camps, these skills may be vital. The students I spoke to said that it was great thinking that they knew what to do if their friends were in trouble. Great care for others Years 4-6 students!

Playgroup
It has been wonderful to see so many families coming along to playgroup each Friday morning. We have really enjoyed having you all visit our school each week. We have one last Playgroup session for this term which will be held on Friday 11 September at 9:00am. This session is filling up fast so please RSVP to Jasmine at jbenf10@eq.edu.au if you would like to come along. Please note that Playgroup will not be held this Friday (4 September) as it is a Student Free Day. Please keep your eye out early in Term 4 on our Facebook page and through our newsletter to see dates and times for playgroup in Term 4. A big thank you to Miss Livy who has done a wonderful job running the Mango Hill State School Playgroup all term.
Thinking Routines
This week in Prep we have added a thinking routine to our guided reading groups. Thinking routines help to scaffold our conversation and direct our thinking! This can be hugely helpful with our little learners, who can sometimes take any opportunity to divert from the topic and share everything about their current life situation!
When we introduce a new text to students, we conduct a ‘Book Walk’. This walk through the book with the teacher is crucial in introducing new vocabulary so students have much greater success when they read the text. It can be a challenge to narrow the focus of students to just the text (instead of sharing broadly) and this is where a thinking routine comes in handy!
‘See, Think, Wonder’ has been very successful in focusing student thinking to stay in the text, whilst making some connections to their world. We use the front cover. “What do you see?” “What do you think might happen in this story?” And then, once we have looked at a few pages, “I wonder what might happen?”
You could try using this strategy at home with picture books!
As the weather warms up, it’s crucial our students have their hats and water bottles with them each day. We ask our Mango Hill students to wear their hats to and from school. Thank you for your support with this.

Have a lovely week

Year 2 Learning Through Incursions
Today has been so exciting as the Year 2 students have experienced two incursions consolidating their learning for History and Italian.
In History (HASS), the students have been learning about 'how people's lives have changed over time'. Today, in their incursion, they learned about how people washed, made butter, played, dressed and even had tea parties in the past. The telephones, irons and even typewriters of the past were such a surprise for our little ones! What a great way to learn to compare olden day lives to our contempoary lives.
In Italian, the students completed their term 3 assessment when ordering their gelato icecream from the Italian speaking Gelato shop owners. It was great to see them using their Italian to order, say please and thank you and even pay for their gelato. What a great real world learning experience!

Year 1 – Emotional Regulation to get Ready to Learn
This term, as discussed in our Inclusion DP’s newsletter article last week, our Year 1 teachers have been working hard to explicitly teach students how to be in charge of their emotional regulation, using the language from a research-based program, Zones of Regulation. The students are able to identify which zone they may be in Green Zone, Blue Zone, Yellow Zone or Red Zone and importantly then what they need to do to get themselves back into the Green Zone (which we alsoidentify by using our school language – Ready to Learn).
Many of our Year 1 students are now able to self-regulate and use strategies that work for them to ensure that they are ready to learn in the classroom. On my visits, I often hear students saying, “I need to get a drink to calm down”, “The reset space helps me to calm”, “I think I need a movement break to get my sillies out”. The Year 1 staff are fabulous at differentiating the strategies to ensure that the students know that they will be supported to listen to their bodies and their emotions and respond.

Have a wonderful week

Working Together to Solve Problems in 3T
Going on a fractions question trail in 3T this week proved to be quite the challenge. Ms Turnbull organised the students into partners to solve the problems to a series of questions which would allow them to follow the correct path of clues. One mistake and they would find themselves coming to a road block and having to think again about their answers. It was great to see the students drawing pictures and making representations of their thinking as they solved each question. Well done 3T, what super stars!
Please take a look at these photos of 3T on their fractions problem solving journney.

Care for Learning in Year 5 and 6
Last week I had the pleasure of visiting 6V as they continued their learning of equivalent fractions, decimals and number lines. Students had clarity of their learning as Mr Vlieg did a super job at communicating a clear learning intention and then co-constructed a success criteria for the lesson with the students. Students then formed collaborative learning groups, talked about their understanding of the maths learning and then worked together to apply this knowledge. Following this students completed a gallery walk and observed the responses of other groups and reflected on their peers’ learnings. It was great to be a member of 6V’s wonderful learning culture. Great work 6V!
Please see the photos below of 6V and all their hard work.

Year 6 Graduation
Graduation is at the Eaton’s Hill Hotel on 7 December 2020 commencing at 5:00pm. As soon as students return their RSVP forms to the office the school will invoice families so that families have time to pay off their tickets. To help raise money to fund the event the Graduation Committee is hosting the Queensland Election Day on Saturday 31 Octoberat the school. From 8:00am-2:00pm we will be facilitating a sausage sizzle, drinks and bake stall. If you are interested in volunteering your time, drinks or baked goods, please see my email sent to all Year 6 families. We are also asking each Year 6 class to provide a hamper to be raffled off during the day. These hampers are always popular and are awarded at the Art Show each year and will be drawn at the Election Day event. If you can, please donate something for your class hamper. The themes are: 6V and 6K – "for him", 6H "for kids", 6B and 6D – "for her", 6L – "gourmet savoury" and 6T – "gourmet sweet". All goods can be submitted to the classroom teacher. Thank you for your help in making the Year 6 Graudation a wonderful night for all of the students.
Have a great week

RUOK?
Next week we will celebrate RUOK? Day on Thursday 10 September. Our Year 6 students will explore how we can engage with others we are worried about and how we can get help for ourselves as well. We will also welcome some Mango Hill State Secondary College staff and students to our school to help out on the day.
RUOK? Day aims to inspire and empower everyone to meaningfully connect with the people around them and start a conversation with anyone who may be struggling. As RUOK? say, “You don't need to be an expert to reach out - just a good friend and a great listener.”
RUOK? Suggest these four steps and to potentially have a conversation that could change a life:
1. Ask R U OK?
2. Listen
3. Encourage action
4. Check in.

Science Competition
We were blown away by the wave of incredible entries that we had for the Science Week competition this year. It was wonderful to see how proud students and their families were of their projects. The STEM team were very impressed too!
The theme of the 2020 competition was “Deep Blue”. Students in Year 1-2 created sustainable ocean habitats; Year 3-4 students designed fish traps that helped promote sustainable fishing; and Year 5-6 students designed a prototype of a mechanism that helps free our oceans from pollutions.
Students were also required to provide a written response explaining their design. These written explanations were of high quality. Combined with their designs, we saw evidence of thorough research and critical and creative thinking from all of our entrants.
Our entrants demonstrated amazing creativity, innovation and scientific thinking with their designs. Our STEM team will be looking through all of the design and responses over the next week and prize-winners will be announced on Virtual Parade next Friday. Thank you to all of our students who participated in this year’s competition. We are very proud of you all!

AR Millionaire Readers
It has been a huge week for Accelerated Reader Millionaires! This week Batsi and Anja both reached 1 million words. This is a great achievement and a recognition of their ongoing commitment to reading. Well done Batsi and Anja! We are very proud of them and have added their photos to our special AR wall.
This week also saw Prithuvi read 6 million words! This is an extraordinary achievement and we were very excited to add another photo of Prithuvi to our special display. Prithuvi’s ongoing dedication and commitment to reading has resulted in such a high number of words! We can’t wait to see how many more words he will read this year – it is bound to be a record!
There is still plenty of time this week for everyone to visit the Hub and borrow a book to support their AR reading goals. Perhaps you are aiming for a special level, a number of books or a number of words. Pop on down before school (open at 8.15am) or after school (till 3pm) to choose something special for the last couple of weeks of Term 3.

Premier’s Reading Challenge
All Reading Record forms for the Reading Challenge should now have been submitted to the Hub. The Premier’s Reading Challenge is now closed for 2020.
Have a wonderful week

Voluntary Library Contribution
At Mango Hill State School we receive funds from the state government that provide the core services and materials for our students. We also have a Voluntary Contribution scheme which we use as a Library Fund to purchase additional library books for our Hub.
It has been a pleasure to watch our Hub collection of books grow each year, now providing more than 10 000 books for our students from Prep to Year 6 to enjoy. Books include those in the general collection that all students have an opportunity to borrow as well as English unit books, Guided Readers and Home Readers for use within classrooms.
The voluntary contribution of $50 per family per year allows us to continue to purchase new books each year, supporting students’ learning in all areas and providing lots of choice for everyone. There is nothing better than when a student finds the perfect book – just what they are looking for, so with now more than 1300 students at Mango Hill we need plenty of books to make this possible.
Donations to the Library Fund are tax deductible and receipts will be provided. Donations can be made online through the QKR payments APP or at the cashier’s window either Monday, Wednesday or Friday morning between 8am and 9am, or you can contact the office for other payment alternatives. We look forward to receiving your contribution to support the development and love of reading across our community.
For assistance with the QKR app or if you would like to know anymore please do not hesitate to contact me to discuss further. I can be reached on email kklip1@eq.edu.au or by contacting the office on 3481 8111.
Thank you
