Music Gala Evening
Tomorrow night we will hold our mid-year music gala event in Gigum Hall starting at 6pm. The evening will showcase the musical talents of our instrumental and vocal ensembles. I can’t wait to hear our students perform!
A reminder that pre-ordered grazing boxes will be available for pick up from the café in Gigum Hall from 4.45pm. Parents will also be able to purchase coffee, soft drinks, water, and chips.
School Concert
Our Year 2 & 4 students, choirs, dance clubs and eisteddfod teams are getting excited for their school concert next Tuesday evening.
We will have around 700 seats for adults so should have plenty of space.
There will be items for sale at the canteen in Gigum hall including coffee, water, softdrink and chips from 4.45pm.
We look forward to a fabulous evening of singing and dancing!
Success!!!
Congratulations to the AFL Teams with both our boys and girls teams making it through to the next round of the AFLQ Schools Cup. Our boys finished the Brisbane North Regional competition in 1st place and girls in 2nd place. Tremendous effort by all players, teachers and parents. They will now play in the Brisbane Metro Playoff for a spot in the State Finals. Go Team Mango!!!
Congratulations also to our choir who sang beautifully and with great enthusiasm at the Choral fanfare last week. The students really enjoyed singing and listening to other primary school choirs. The judge liked the way they sang and they met the criteria to achieve a gold award. Well done Mango Melodies!
We recently had 29 students attend a chess tournament with wonderful results. We are so proud of their efforts!
Our Colour Explosion was a successful event last week. Thank you to everyone who assisted on the day. A huge shout out to Casey Bettridge our main organiser who was well supported by Ellaine Warner and Jasmine Benfer. Almost $30 000 was raised toward the P & C target of $50 000 donation this year. This will go toward books, music, PE, science and early years equipment. Well done Team Mango!
Special congratulations to 2H as the highest-class fundraiser and to Mere in Prep S as the highest individual fundraiser. Prizes for these winners will be distributed soon.

P & C Meeting
Our June P & C Meeting will be held next Monday night from 6.30pm in the Wandani Centre. I hope you can join us!

Team Mango You Tube Channel!
Don't forget we now have our Youtube channel up and running. if you can't make it to our 'Chit Chats' clicking on the links below is a great way to stay informed.
The Care Class focus that will be delivered this Friday is ’Centring the body’. We will also be consolidating this focus throughout next week.
Being centred is key for children and adults to self-regulate our emotions. It is important to find our body balance to encourage focus and concentration in creating a state of readiness to work and learn.
Activities such as silent ball, poses, yoga, stretching and breathing can help us bring our awareness to the centre of our bodies.
Mango Hill State School will once again be participating in the 2023 ICAS Assessments. ICAS is designed to target students’ higher-order thinking and problem-solving skills in English, Mathematics, Science, Spelling and Digital Technologies. Each assessment celebrates students’ accomplishments by providing opportunities for recognition. Top performers will be eligible for medals and the opportunity to attend a special award ceremony to have their academic excellence publicly recognised.
Please find attached the details regarding registration and Online Parent Payment System. Specific details of assessment days and times will be released in the near future.

Colour Explosion
Last Friday we were super lucky to take part in our very first Colour Explosion. We came to school all in white and waited in anticipation for our turn at the obstacle course. It was so much fun running with our teachers around the oval, jumping through hoops, balancing on the beams, jumping over hay bales and running through the tunnels. We loved being splashed with the coloured powder and watching our lovely whites become covered with all the colours of the rainbow. Thank you to all our families who came and cheered us on and those that volunteered to help. Colour Explosion was most definitely the highlight of our day! This week we have been writing all about our Colour Explosion experience. Together we have brainstormed interesting words to describe the course so we can share with others how exciting the event was. We can’t wait for others to read what our favourite part of the course was!

We’re at the tricky time of the term, where we are all very tired and “pushing honey uphill”. The weather is cooler, it’s more difficult to get out of bed – and even when we drag ourselves out of bed when the alarm goes off, we are still on the “go-slow”. And I’m just talking about the adults!
We’re noticing our little ones are becoming a little fractious with each other, as the semester progresses. This is normal. We spend six hours a day together and we end up bickering like brothers and sisters sometimes. We are continuing to focus on using our strategies to regulate. Specifically, we have learned and are practising:
- How to breathe and how breathing techniques help to calm our minds and our bodies
- How to be present, centred and grounded
- What it looks like in our own bodies when we are stressed – and using breathing techniques to de-stress
Us Year 1 adults are modelling the way. We are showing our students how to do this and working hard to name and notice in our rooms, when we see students actively taking a moment and walking away to centre ourselves. It’s tricky work and it will take practice.
This Thursday afternoon and this coming Friday morning we are running Parent Chit Chat sessions around regulation and the things we’ve been learning in our Care Classes this term. If you’re available to come along, please do; we’d love to see you. In the coming weeks, we will create another You Tube clip around this topic. Did you know we have a You Tube channel? We have two clips for parents already, around helping your child with reading and helping your child with writing. Check them out via these links below.
Have a great week

Teaching for Positive Play Times
As children come to the end of the term, they can get tired and lose their capacity to deal with difficulties in the playground. We know ourselves as adults, that when we feel energised and refreshed, we can solve problems easily. However, when we are feeling tired and run down, sometimes little bumps in the road can feel like big mountains.
In Year 2, we recognise that we have some tired little people on our hands at this time in the term. Sometimes when our students are exhausted, they resort to using hands on strategies rather than using their words to solve problems.
Over the last two weeks, we have been focusing on building the children’s skills around how to deal with unfavourable situations in the playground. We’ve talked about what words are productive and can help when solving problems. We’ve also explored how the tone of voice we use can effect how our needs are perceived by others. In addition to this, we’ve revisited the steps of the High 5 and gone one step further to investigate why it is important to listen to others if the High 5 is used on us.
To help the children learn about what to do in different situations, we’ve created a series of videos showing scenarios students might encounter both in the classroom and the playground. Classes watch the videos together and talk about how they would respond and why that is appropriate. A big shout out to Dylan, Jayan, Archer, River, Azalea, Isaac, Blake and Harper who were amazing actors and helped act out some scenarios for the Year 2.

Have a wonderful week
Gratitude in Year 3
All the Year 3 teaching team and I were so grateful last Friday seeing our students participate in the Colour Explosion. Students loved this super fun time together and they all ran the course caring for themselves and others. Congratulations to Year 3! Thank you to all families who supported this P&C fundraiser event.
Learning in Year 3
This week in Year 3, student learning and assessment continues. I joined 3T for a lesson on angles – acute, obtuse, reflex, straight – and students then located these types of angles in their environment. Students are learning to solve problems involving shapes and angles.
The whole Year 3 teaching team is proud of the efforts our students have made this term and we are celebrating the steps forward by each student. Our school is an inclusive school and we teach Year 3 to recognise that whilst students may learn a little bit differently to each other, all of our achievements and personal successes are to be celebrated.
Date claimers
Wow, the term is flying by and it is nearly time for our Year 3 Stay and Play. You will have received your invitation to Stay and Play at 8:30-9:30 am on Friday 16 June. We hope you can join us. At the same time, we know that parents can’t be at every event. If you are unavailable on Friday 16 June, please rest assured that Stay and Play will still be a wonderful morning for your child. Please also circle 21 June in your calendars as Year 3 participate in their Athletics Carnival or 22 June for some students (depending on their age). We hope to see you there.
Take care and have a wonderful week

Care for Learning
Well done to all our friends in Year 4 who have demonstrated Care for Learning this past week. It has been a very busy time and our students have really strived to demonstrate their best learning collaboratively and independently.
Our Year 4 students have been working hard applying all of their mathematical learning to solve complex unfamiliar problems! It has been great to see students demonstrating a growth mindset as they solve these problems in multiple ways and explain their answers using mathematical language! Well done Year 4 ?
Concert!
This week, Year 4 have all been practising for their big performance at the Mid-Year Concert. I’ve been lucky enough to get a sneak peek and we are all in for a treat next week! We are looking forward to welcoming you all to Gigum Hall on Tuesday for the big performance. Doors open at 6.45pm for Year 4.

Chess
On Thursday 25 May Mr McGregor took 22 eager students from Year 4 to 6 to Nundah State School to compete in a Chess Competition organised by Gardiner Chess. They played a number of games against students from different state and private schools. The students had a great day challenging themselves and by learning new skills and strategies. Overall, it was an engaging day with many students coming home with medals and merit ribbons. The students are to be commended on their effort, behaviour and sportsmanship throughout the day. They represented our school exceptionally well. Way to go Team Mango!
The following students were individual place getters.
Malakai 2nd in Grade B, Chester 1st in Grade C. Team 1 came 3rd place in Grade B and Team 5 came 1st place in Grade C.

Learning in Year 6
This week I spent some time in 6R as they were learning to solve multi-step fraction word problems. Mrs Robinson taught the class ways to simplify what can often look complex, as they worked to pick out the relevant information from their word problems, before then going on to solve them. I saw students not only calculating answers, but proving their answers using diagrams and number lines. Such a strong conceptual understanding of fractions on display in 6R!
During a brief visit in 6L, I was lucky enough to see students working together to give each other feedback on their writing tasks. 6L took this role seriously, ensuring they carefully read their peer’s text before sharing specific feedback to help them improve on it. I love seeing examples of Teamwork such as this so often around our school. It certainly makes me feel privileged to be a part of Team Mango!
Colour Explosion
What a blast Colour Explosion was! Thank you to all of the parent volunteers who were involved, ensuring our students had a great time. Not only is Colour Explosion an excellent fundraiser, it’s also a great team bonding experience for our classes. How fantastic it was to see some of the teachers joining in on the fun too!
Interschool Sport
This Friday will be our first Interschool sport day for the year. The senior students have spent the past term training during break times for their respective sports and I know they are excited to compete against other local schools. I know that our students will represent Mango Hill State School with pride by demonstrating excellent sportsmanship!

Boy’s AFLQ Schools Cup
On Wednesday 1 June, 19 boys from MHSS represented our school at the annual AFLQ Schools Cup Competition which this year was played at Burpengary Sports Complex. This was the 7th year Mango Hill SS had entered into the competition.
MHSS were the reigning Brisbane North Regional winners from 2022, so the team was excited to continue in this success. There were five teams competing with our long-time rivals Banksia Beach amongst them.
With an easy start to the day for MHSS, the boys team captained by Cohen C amassed big wins over Dakabin SS 55-1 and Morayfield SS 55-0. The next game was a very tight game against a much-improved Nudgee college. It came down to the wire but MHSS eventually won 25-18.
In the last round match, MHSS played a very important game against Banksia Beach SS. A win would ensure 1st place finish. A loss would mean a three-way tie on matches won and it would come down to percentage.
The match began with points scored by MHSS. However, our long-time nemesis Banksia Beach fought back, proving that this would indeed be our most difficult game of the day. The match concluded with an exciting couple of goals. Banksia Beach eventually came out on top 25-18.
Thankfully, this result was still good enough for our boy’s team to take 1st place and to progress onto the Brisbane Metropolitan finals in term 3.
All boys did the “team” jobs, following our game-plan to perfection. Each player trusting their team mates and focussing on their individual tasks. Coaches Mr V and Mr Goulding were very impressed!
A very special thank you goes out to the wonderful parents who came as team supporters and to help out on the day. Without this wonderful support days like this would not run as smoothly as they did at the AFLQ Schools Cup.
Resuls
Rd 1 vs Dakabin SS – WIN 55-1
Rd 2 vs Morayfield SS – WIN 55-0
Rd 3 vs Nudgee College – WIN 25-18
Rd 4 vs Banksia Beach SS – LOSS 18-25
Girl’s AFLQ Schools Cup
16 girls from MHSS represented our school at the annual AFLQ Schools Cup Competition, which this year was played at Burpengary Sports Complex. This was the 6th year Mango Hill SS had entered the girls into the competition. In that time, MHSS has improved each year and were confident of taking it to the best teams in our region. There were three teams MHSS were placed against including Banksia Beach, Morayfield East SS and Dakabin SS.
MHSS first game was against Dakabin SS. Coming out of the blocks very quickly, MHSS kicked a few early goals and ended up winning the game 23-0 with Annlea, Willow and Charlotte all playing extremely well.
The second game was against Banksia Beach SS, who were the reigning State Champions of 2022. A really tough game ended in a 0-42 loss. Again, Annlea played extremely well with Zahra and Harper also stepping up.
In the last game MHSS played Morayfield SS and with the girls determined to finish strongly and have a 2nd win, they played with great tenacity and determination to come out on top 42-9.
The girl’s team ended up finishing in 2nd position for the competition. Finishing in the top 2 meant that for the first time ever our MHSS girls’ team will now get the opportunity in Term 3 to compete at the Brisbane Metropolitan finals. Well done girls!!!
All of the girls performed extremely well and as a team, MHSS were significantly improved. Mr Hills and Miss Stanley were extremely proud of each of the girls who participated on the day and could not have asked for a more committed and lovelier group of students. The commitment shown by these students to not only attend the day, but also to participate in training after school is a credit to them and their families.
A very special thank you goes out to the wonderful parents who came as team officials and helped out. Without this wonderful support days like this would not run as smoothly as they did.
Results:
Rd 1 vs Dakabin SS – WIN 23-0
Rd 2 vs Banksia Beach – LOSS 0-42
Rd 3 vs Morayfield SS – WIN 42-9

Interschool Sport (Year 5-6)
A reminder that all Year 5 and 6 students will get the chance to participate in the Pine Rivers Interschool Sports Competition. Students compete against teams from other schools in a variety of sports. The confirmed dates for Pine Rivers Interschool Sport in Term 2 are:
- 9June (Friday Week 8)
- 23June (Friday Week 10)
- 14July (Friday Week 1, Term 3)
* Due to cancellation of week 4 and 6 interschool sport, new dates have been set
Pine Rivers District Sporting Trials (10-12yr Old’s)
Pine Rivers District School Sport offers 10-12 year old students the opportunity to try and make the Pine Rivers District team for a variety of sports. If successful, they compete at Metropolitan North trials and carnivals, with the possibility of selection into teams competing at State events. Students must be nominated by their school in order to attend a district trial or carnival.
District trials are held at various venues within the Pine Rivers District (e.g. Les Hughes Sports Complex) and are not attended by MHSS staff. A Pine Rivers District Coach and Manager will facilitate the trial.
Students who express an interest to trial can collect forms from our PE office. They will be given the Pine Rivers District forms and the relevant trial information. Completed district forms are to be returned to the PE office by the due date. Once the forms are collated, students will be nominated for the trial. Forms are then handed back to students and must then be taken to the coach/manager at the District Trials. Students will NOT be allowed to trial if district forms are not handed in completed. Unless specifically organised by the school, it is the parents’ responsibility to transport students to and from district trials.
Most Pine Rivers District trials are limited to students turning 11 or 12 years of age and who are considered at a high level in the sport e.g. Div. 1 or A Grade. Cross Country, Athletics and Swimming trials however are open for students turning 10, 11 and 12 years of age. Sports that students are able to trial for include the following.
- AFL
- Basketball
- Cricket
- Football (Soccer)
- Golf
- Hockey
- Netball
- Rugby League
- Rugby Union
- Softball
- Squash
- Tennis
- Touch
- Triathlon
Mango Hill can normally nominate up to three students for each district sport trial. If more than three students wish to be nominated Mango Hill will select the three best candidates for the trial. The selection of these students may be either based on past performances/current club form or through a selection trial at school.
If you are interested in your child trialling for Pine Rivers District more information can be obtained from the Mango Hill State School newsletter, with regular trial updates listed. You can also contact Mr Nick Hills - nhill96@eq.edu.au (MHSS PE Teacher) so he is aware of your intention to attend the trial.

As we look towards the end of term we have the Athletics Days coming up! Does your hat colour match your house? Athletics Day is a fun and exciting time where students get to represent their house in a variety of sporting activities. The lining of your hat should match the house your student is in, as the hats get turned inside out and so it is easy to see which house they belong to - Flynn (blue), Barton (green), Walker (orange).
If you need to get a new hat to prepare for this day, pop in to see us at the uniform shop where we can get you all sorted in the correct hat for your house.
With the cooler weather well and truly upon us, we have tracksuit pants available. These are wonderfully warm and are the same fleecy material as the zip up jacket.
We also offer online orders. Orders can be placed through our website any time at www.wearitto.com.au/schools/mango-hill-state-school
Mango Hill State School - Schools - Wearitto Wearitto delivers high quality uniforms in a way that makes things easy for schools and parents. We create clothing for school, work and play. |
Orders are packed through the uniform shop during our opening hours and an email is sent to let you know when your order is ready to be picked up, or, if you'd like your student to bring the uniforms home with them, email us at mangohill@wearitto.com.au with your student's name and class name and we can get it to them.
