Cybersafety Parent Information Session
Our school will be hosting a ThinkUKnow cybersafety presentation on Wednesday 17 May at 5:30pm in the Wandani Centre. All parents and carers are encouraged to attend.
ThinkUKnow Australia is an evidence-based education program delivered nationally to keep children safe online.
ThinkUKnow Australia is a partnership between the Australian Federal Police, Microsoft Australia, Datacom and the Commonwealth Bank of Australia. The program is delivered in collaboration with policing partners New South Wales Police Force, Northern Territory Police, Queensland Police, South Australia Police, Tasmania Police, Western Australia Police, as well as Neighbourhood Watch Australasia.
This is a fantastic opportunity for you to learn more about young people and the online environment, and how you can help them to be safe and responsible users of technology.
For more information, you can visit www.thinkuknow.org.au
The Care Class focus that will be delivered this Friday is ‘What makes me stressed’. We will also be consolidating this focus throughout next week.
We will be learning about ‘what stresses you’, ‘how you feel when you are stressed’ and ways we can manage our stresses. In Care Class we will identify family, school and friendship things that can make us stressed. Each of us differ in both what makes us stressed and how we respond to it. Students will discuss various techniques to help with stress management.
Upcoming Mid-Year Concert Details – Year 2 and Year 4
We are very excited to inform you about our Mid-Year Mango Hill State School Concert which will be held on Tuesday 13 June in our school’s Gigum Hall. The concert will be a celebration and showcase of the students’ performing arts skills and talents and it will be a great opportunity for all our Year 2 and 4 students to be on a stage in front of a large audience!
We look forward to seeing you all on the night!

Fun with Numbers and Shapes
This term in Maths we are learning to show numbers in different ways. We have been practising the following.
- Counting forwards and backwards past the number 10. We are trying to get to 20!
- Showing numbers in different ways – in written form, as a numeral, as a picture or an array. We are learning to represent numbers in lots of different ways including explaining how we know they match and be able to talk about how we know when the don’t match.
You can help us explore numbers at home or when we are out and about in their environment by playing counting games, recognising numbers and counting objects. Remember to ask us to share our thinking and give reasons behind our thinking – What makes you say that? How do you know?
Whilst we are busy developing our understanding of numbers, we are also beginning to explore 2D shapes. Our teachers have been teaching us the name of the shapes and to sort them into groups by looking at the number of sides, the shape of the sides (straight or curved) and how many corners. We have loved learning and playing with shapes this week. Take a look at PL's shape houses and the puzzle of the day from PB!

Have a great week

Learning about Length in Year 1
This term, one of our maths units is all about length. We are having fun exploring longer, shorter, longest and shortest. There’s some rules for measuring that we’re figuring out.
To be accurate, you need to have the objects to be compared, lined up together at the same starting point. We also have to use the same unit to measure. This is tricky because some units are a better choice for some objects than they are for others!
In 1S, some of us were tricked by our friends! Using our eyes, we could tell which pencil was longest and which pencils was shortest. But why was the shorter pencil 6 blocks in length yet the longer pencil was only 4 blocks in length? How could this be?
Well, the answer to that is that someone muddled the blocks and used TWO different types of blocks, big and small - not exactly the same size - to measure the length of the pencils.
That’s when we all realised that when we measure, the units we use to measure need to be exactly the same, so it’s a fair comparison.
Measuring the length of objects in the home is a fun activity. Don’t use rulers, use other items. Lego blocks, paddle pop sticks - what else can you find around the home that would be a clever unit to measure with?

Diving into Three-Digit Numbers
The Year 2s have been starting off the term diving into three-digit numbers in Maths. They’ve been practising counting forwards and backwards from 1000 and learning all about place value.
Place value means the value of each digit in a number. For example, the 3 in 853 represents 3 ones while the 5 represents 5 tens and the 8 represents 8 hundreds. It is important that children understand that whilst a digit can be the same, its value depends on where it is in the number.
Children’s understanding of place value is strengthened when they have lots of opportunities to represent numbers using a range of different materials. When students manipulate these materials they start to understand the value of each place in a number.
Check out our students showing their thinking using numerals, number lines and partitioning mats.

Ways you can help at home…
- Practise counting aloud every day. Practise counting forwards, then backwards and then from any given number.
- Practise counting large collections. Encourage your child to use efficient counting by grouping objects into groups of a hundred or ten and then adding on the remaining ones.
- Practise reading three-digit numbers when you are out and about. Price tags, house numbers, signs … They’re everywhere!
Mother’s Day Stay and Play
Special loved ones are invited along to our upcoming Stay and Play afternoons to celebrate Mother’s Day. These special events will take place on the following days.
- 2C, 2H, 2R and 2F – Monday 8May 1:45 – 2:15pm
- 2I, 2O, 2P and 2L – Tuesday 9 May 1:45 – 2:15pm
- 2M, 2W and 1/2B – Thursday 11May 1:45 – 2:15pm
We’d love to see all our loved ones there celebrating with us!
Have a wonderful week
Thank You
to our parent volunteers on our Caboolture Historical Village yesterday, today and tomorrow. Your support and generosity is remarkable. We are grateful for you.
Learning in Year 3
The highlight of Week 3 is without doubt our excursion to Caboolture Historical Village. The classes on Tuesday enjoyed the blacksmith, the train ride, panning for “gems” and a tour of the village. Our Wednesday and Thursday classes will visit the blacksmith, take the train ride, tour the village and experience an exciting transport activity. Here are a few photos of all the fun from Tuesday …

Playing in Year 3
Please remind your child to bring their hat to school every day. Students should wear their hats as they come to school and as they head home. We expect our students to wear their hats at break times and of course for lessons like PE.
Date Claimers
Parents, you may wish to mark your calendars for 2 June as we will be participating in Colour Explosion that day. Parents are very welcome to attend and watch their child complete the Colour Explosion course. More information to come in the next week.
Take care and have a wonderful week

Deepening Clarity
I had the pleasure of spending some time in 4M this week, watching them improve their writing by starting sentences with feelings to show emotion and editing for punctuation and spelling. The students in 4M collaborated to proofread their work to ensure their spelling, punctuation and organisation communicated emotion and feelings within their diary entries. As I spoke with students and asked them how they were going with their learning, they were able to explain their learning and progress to me, by self-assessing against the lesson success criteria. Super clarity in learning from 4M and Ms McGuinness!
Our students in all classes are using their scales to self-assess and strive for four stars. It’s fabulous hearing students talk about ‘bumping up’ their work and using the BIUW for help.

First Aide Awareness Training
Last week our Year 5 students participated in their First Aid Awareness Training. This training is aimed at providing awareness to students on when to utilise First Aid procedures when they or others are in trouble. This opportunity is provided to our students prior to school camp and forms part of a wider agenda of providing our students with real life skills to ensure they make healthy choices.
When I spoke to one Year 5 student they said, “It was great to learn some strategies of how to care for others if they are in trouble – this means I can help more people.” What a great ambassador for our Cares.

Have a super week

Learning in Year 6
Across Year 6 classrooms this term, our teachers have committed to supporting students to have clarity about the ‘big purpose’ behind their learning each lesson. When I look around at the learning walls in Year 6, you can see the evidence of this work, with lots of example of how students have worked collaboratively to unpack and understand the purpose of their English unit.
Another focus across Year 6 is the giving and receiving of feedback, both from the teacher and from peers. At MHSS, we use the scale as a tool for effective self, peer and teacher feedback, as it supports us to identify what we might see evidence of in different levels of writing. In 6W, I was able to see some excellent examples of peer feedback, where students were finding evidence of scale elements in each other’s pieces of writing and then giving next steps to their peers, based on what is missing in their writing from the scale. Well done 6W and Mr White!

Preparing for high school
Throughout the year, Year 6 students will have the opportunity to hear from the local high schools about some of the exciting programs they have on offer, as well as attend transition days later in the year. Throughout Semester 2, we will set-up a range of internal transition opportunities for our students too.
The first of these experiences will occur next Tuesday 9 May, when staff from Murrumba State Secondary College come out to our school to share about some of their academies on offer.
Graduation
It feels like a long time before graduation, but there is a lot to plan to ensure our students and their families have a memorable night. I will be sending an EOI email out soon for Year 6 parents to join our graduation committee. Further details of what this involves will be detailed in the email. If this is something you are able and willing to commit to, we’d love to have you on board!

Premier’s Reading Challenge
We are very excited to once again participate in the Premier’s Reading Challenge. Students all over Qld will join us as we read, read and read some more! We would love everyone to participate. All you need to do is download the Reading Record Form (attached here or available from the Hub) and complete this as you read at home. The books can be library books, home readers, magazines or an old favourite that your children want to reread! Once all books are completed return the form to the Hub – but there is no rush. Completed forms are not due back until the end of August!
Scholastic Book Club
Scholastic Book Club has now closed. Thank you to all those who generously supported our school by purchasing books. We will let you know when the books have arrived back and are ready for distribution.
Reading to our Mothers
Don’t forget that a super way to celebrate Mother’s Day would be to read your special mum, gran, auntie or friend a favourite book! They might also like time to read their own favourite book, but if you’d like to find a book to read, pop on down to the Hub and I’m sure we can help!
The Hub is open every day from 8.15am and until 3pm every afternoon. See you soon!
Have a fantastic week

Term 2 PE
Well this term is all about Sports Day (Prep-2) and the Athletics Carnival (Yr3-6). All students in PE from Prep-Year 6 will focus on preparing for these big events which are held at the end of Term 2.
More information will come out later in the term but at this stage our confirmed dates are as follows.
- Week 10 Monday 19 June – Junior Sports Day (all Year Prep, 1 and 2 students compete)
- Week 10 Tuesday 20 June – Senior Athletics Carnival – Discus, 200m/800m Finals (Some Yr 3-6 students compete)
- Week 10 Wednesday 21 June - Senior Athletics Carnival – 8 & 9 Year Old students (Year 3’s and some Year 4’s compete)
- Week 10 Thursday 22 June - Senior Athletics Carnival – 10,11 & 12 Year Old students (Some Year 4’s, all Year 5’s & 6’s compete)
Due to large student numbers at Mango Hill SS, we have a split Senior Athletics Carnival. This is to ensure students get the maximum opportunity to participate, students have enough space to compete safely and we have enough room for all spectators who attend. It will be a busy end to the term but we are thoroughly looking forward to it!
Interschool Sport (Year 5-6)
A reminder that all Year 5 and 6 students will get the chance to participate in the Pine Rivers Interschool Sports Competition. Students compete against teams from other schools in a variety of sports. The confirmed dates for Pine Rivers Interschool Sport in Term 2 are as follows.
- Friday 12 May (Term 2 Week 4)
- Friday 26 May (Term 2 Week 6)
- Friday 9 June (Term 2 Week 8)
Pine Rivers District Sporting Trials (10-12yr Old’s)
Pine Rivers District School Sport offers 10-12 year old students the opportunity to try and make the Pine Rivers District team for a variety of sports. If successful, they compete at Metropolitan North trials and carnivals, with the possibility of selection into teams competing at State events. Students must be nominated by their school in order to attend a district trial or carnival.
District trials are held at various venues within the Pine Rivers District (e.g. Les Hughes Sports Complex) and are not attended by MHSS staff. A Pine Rivers District Coach and Manager will facilitate the trial.
Students who express an interest to trial can collect forms from our PE office. They will be given the Pine Rivers District forms and the relevant trial information. Completed district forms are to be returned to the PE office by the due date. Once the forms are collated, students will be nominated for the trial. Forms are then handed back to students and must then be taken to the coach/manager at the District Trials. Students will NOT be allowed to trial if district forms are not handed in completed. Unless specifically organised by the school, it is the parents’ responsibility to transport students to and from district trials.
Most Pine Rivers District trials are limited to students turning 11 or 12 years of age and who are considered at a high level in the sport e.g. Div. 1 or A Grade. Cross Country, Athletics and Swimming trials however are open for students turning 10, 11 and 12 years of age. Sports that students are able to trial for include the following.
- AFL
- Basketball
- Cricket
- Football (Soccer)
- Golf
- Hockey
- Netball
- Rugby League
- Rugby Union
- Softball
- Squash
- Tennis
- Touch
- Triathlon
Mango Hill can normally nominate up to three students for each district sport trial. If more than three students wish to be nominated Mango Hill will select the three best candidates for the trial. The selection of these students may be either based on past performances/current club form or through a selection trial at school.
If you are interested in your child trialling for Pine Rivers District more information can be obtained from the Mango Hill State School newsletter, with regular trial updates listed. You can also contact Mr Nick Hills - nhill96@eq.edu.au (MHSS PE Teacher) so he is aware of your intention to attend the trial.
Pine Rivers District Cross Country
Mango Hill competed in the Pine Rivers District Cross Country trials on Tuesday. In wonderful conditions, runners made their way to Pine Rivers Park to compete against the 22 other schools in the district.
Students were extremely excited and nerves were definitely present. The course, which consisted of laps around Pine Rivers Park, was in excellent condition with 10-year-old competitors completing 2km and 11- and 12-year-old competitors completing the 3km course.
The attitude that Mango Hill runners displayed prior, during and after running was excellent. All competitors completed their race to the best of their ability with many students happy to improve on their performance from the MHSS Cross Country.
Mango Hill had two runners finish in the top eight, which qualified them for the Pine Rivers District team to compete at the Metropolitan North Cross-Country Trials later this term. Jayda (3rd – 11yr Girls) had a fantastic race to gain her first podium finish at a district event.
Mango Hill SS in its history has never had a student win a PRD Cross Country event. However, that has now been achieved with Cloudia (1st – 10yr Girls) taking out her race in what was a fantastic run and a great reward for all of her training efforts.
There were a number of other very gutsy runs by our athletes including Charlotte (23rd – 12yr Girls) and Jeremy (15th – 11yr Boys) putting in great efforts.
Well done to all the Mango Hill runners and a special thankyou to the parents who came on the day to cheer on our team.
