Parent Teacher Partnerships
It is great to see parent teacher interviews starting this week. A positive parent-teacher relationship contributes to your child’s success at school. Your child’s teacher is usually the second most important person in your child’s life (after his/her parents of course). We want to ensure the relationship between parents, teachers and students is a strong and rewarding one.
A positive parent-teacher relationship helps your child feel good about school and be successful in school. It demonstrates to your child that s/he can trust the teacher, because you do. This positive relationship makes a child feel like the important people in their life are working together.
Communicating well is a key factor for making this relationship work. Communication is especially important if you are worried about your child’s progress, development or an issue. Our staff want to help and want every student to be happy, safe and successful at school so please take the time to set up an appointment to discuss any concerns you have.
Finally, a reminder that if your child has conflict with another student, it is NEVER okay to discipline another person’s child at school. Any concerns must be referred to staff to manage.
“The secret is to gang up on the problem, rather than each other.” —Thomas Stallkamp
Special events
Over the next week we have a number of special events for the end of Term 1.
- Junior Cross-Country (Prep – Year 2) tomorrow. A gentle reminder this is non-competitive. We want all students to ‘have a go’ and enjoy the experience without the pressure of winning! Parents are welcome to join us.
- Senior Cross Country (Years 3-6) will be held on Friday. Parents are welcome to join us.
- Jersey Day will be held on Thursday 30 March. The Student Council want us to show we all belong to a team (Team Mango!) to raise money for their 2023 legacy project. Bring along a gold coin!
- On Friday 31 March we will celebrate with our Prep - Year 2 students at a Fancy Bonnet Parade at 8.30am in Gigum Hall. Students will make their fancy bonnet at school. Parents are invited to join us. We look forward to celebrating our Term 1 success!
Keeping Student Safe
A huge thanks to the 99% of parents who follow drop off and pick up procedures. By working together and following procedures, we can focus on student safety.
A few reminders.
- Please walk scooters and bikes across the road and in the school grounds. We have had a few parents on eScooters riding quickly across the road and in school grounds and this poses a safety risk with so many children moving in and out.
- It is a concern to see parents stop in the middle of the carpark and drop children or toot and at pick up and expect children to navigate through the traffic. Please take the extra few minutes to park and walk in if you choose not to use the Look-Out zone or Stop, Drop, Go area.
- If you wish to walk in and pick up your children, the children should wait in the school grounds NOT in the Look-Out area. It makes it tricky when so many parents walk down and collect their child from the Look-Out zone and disrupts the flow of the loading.
- Do not stop or park in the bus lane or parking areas for kindy or staff please.
- When parking in surrounding streets, please park legally and safely and be considerate of neighbours. MBRC have informed us there are rangers patrolling the surrounding streets, particularly in Zircon and Tourmaline where parents are blocking the street by parking on both sides of the road.
Thanks for your help with this.

The Care Class focus delivered on Friday, is ‘IT Safety and Conduct’. This topic will be discussed during Care Class and will also be revised in the classrooms throughout Week 10.
Teachers will be reminding students about the importance of using all devices and the internet safely. This topic ‘IT Safety and Conduct’ links to all four of our Cares.
Children will be involved in discussions and various activities that will remind them to use the correct apps at the correct time, not to share personal information and to be kind whilst online. Classes will be revisiting appropriate strategies and behaviours when working online. Our school ePal Student Participation Agreement sets out our school expectations. A great link is provided below should you wish to cover this topic at home.

Busy, busy, busy!
As we come to the end of our first Term of Prep we are starting to feel a little tired, which is very normal. It is a really important time to remember the power of a good night sleep, healthy breakfast and lunch and snacks to keep us going throughout the day! It is wonderful to see that our students are remembering their healthy fruit/ vegetable breaks in the morning and are coming to school with balanced meals for lunch and afternoon tea. Healthy food helps us with our concentration and readiness to learn.
Over the next two weeks our Prep students will be working very hard to showcase to their teachers all that they have learned. For us as their teachers, we are so proud of their progress. Their drawings are looking amazing and they are starting to use their sound cards to help them label and create simple sentences. An exciting next step as we move into Term 2.

Prep Interviews
Interviews started this week and will continue into the start of Term 2. Our teachers are very much looking forward to meeting with our families during parent teacher interviews to celebrate their progress and to discuss next steps. Thank you for booking in and making the time to meet with our Prep teachers to discuss your child’s progress. If by chance you missed out, please email your child’s class teacher and I am sure they will be happy to work with you

Being a Champion in Year 1
We’ve been working hard in Year 1, to recognise our Big Feelings and to help ourselves to be ready to learn.
We’re not always ready to learn. Sometimes we need a bit more time and a bit more space, to be ready to learn. Sometimes, when the work is really tricky, we might need more breaks from learning. We might need to get a drink, or go for a walk. Sometimes we might need a bit of movement; sometimes we might need a bit of calm and relaxation.
What we all need, differs. We are not all the same! We learned that from our friend Frank Mechler on Friday, when he came to visit and talk to us about being a champion.
Being a champion means recognising that we aren’t the same and that our differences are what makes us a fabulous team. When we build each other up, and help each other to be our best… that’s when we all shine.
In Year 1, we’re working hard to be champions, every day – this means, to give our friends space when they need it, help when they need it and to always be kind and understand that our differences are what makes us special.
You can help us to understand these Big Things by speaking positively about friends and other families at home. As parents, if you see a little one having a big emotion – use those exact words and name and notice this in a positive way. “I can see Bob is finding the morning tricky. He’s having some big feelings.” This helps your child to understand that having big feelings is part of life.
We all have big feelings – even the grown-ups. Naming and noticing these big feelings and showing our little ones positive ways to manage these big feelings, will help us to be our best selves.
Have a great week

Championing Kindness in Year 2
There was a sea of orange across Mango Hill last Friday as we stood together on the National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence.
We came together in Gigum Hall to listen to the messages from Frank Mechler who is the CEO of Bully Proof Australia. Frank spoke to us about what bullying is and isn’t. He said bullying wasn’t just one mean thing that happens to us but it is a repeated incident or behaviour that happens over time. He also said that people bully others to hurt them either emotionally or physically. Frank said we can all stand against bullying by being champions for kindness.
When I asked the children in 2I how they can be champions for kindness, they said the following.
‘If someone is being mean, I’m not mean back. I just use the High 5.’ – Boston.
‘If someone is sad, I cheer them up. I helped Mila once when she was hurt.’ – Anvi.
‘I go and get help from the teacher if someone falls over.’ – Charly.
‘I care fore others and ask if they are ok.’ - Heyansh
We are so lucky to have so many children championing kindness in Year 2!

Easter Bonnet Parade
On Friday 31 March we will be hosting our Easter Bonnet Parade for our Prep to Year 2 students. Parents are welcome to join the festivities that will start at 8:45am in the Gigum Hall. The children will be making a simple bonnet to wear in class however if your child would like to get crafty, they are more than welcome to construct their own creation at home to wear to the parade. Toddlers and kindy children are also welcome to join in the fun. We hope to see you there!
Have a wonderful week
Learning in Year 3
Our Year 3 students are showing both their growth as learners and their commitment as learners as they complete their assessments and their NAPLAN testing. Today is the last day of whole year level testing, as most students complete their Numeracy test. Remember that catch-up testing continues through to Monday of Week 10. Our teachers are investing two hours of collaboration this afternoon as they meet together to ensure we all share the same understanding of student achievement. This ensures that a student who receives eg B on an assessment item would have received the same result in all our classes.
Playing in Year 3
All students need a hat each day at school. During the school day, students wear their hats at both breaks. Students wear their hats, even if they ultimately choose to go to an undercover area. Thank you for your support.
Cross Country this Friday
You are welcome to join us this Friday for our Cross Country. Most students in Year 3 complete in the 8 and 9 year old Cross Country.

Learning in Year 4
It is fantastic to see and celebrate the academic and personal growth of our students over this term. This week I joined 4B for an English lesson, focusing on their Speaking and Listening unit. The students read a historical picture book and took on the role of a presenter to share their viewpoint and opinions of the text. It was fabulous to hear students sharing their opinion, linking their personal experiences with the text.
I also had the opportunity to join 4S for a Maths lesson, where they applied their understanding of patterns to solve a real world problem. It was great to hear students using Mathematical vocabulary such as, increasing, patterns and multiples and also showing more than one way to prove their thinking. Check out some students bumping up their work with the class below.

Cross Country
This Friday is our Cross-Country carnival. Year 4 will be split up across two sessions, with students born in 2013 competing in the morning session and students born in 2014 competing in the middle session. When they are not competing, please be aware that some Year 4 classes will be combining for the session. As this unfamiliar routine can be challenging for students, please take the time to talk this through with your child the night before. I know that the teachers will also discuss this with the students before Friday.
Have a wonderful week

Speaking and Listening in Year 5
This week in Year 5 our students have begun their next English unit focusing on Speaking and Listening. In class students have been reading Andy Lee’s "Do not open this book" and analysing the choices the author and illustrator have chosen to include on the front cover. These include the size, font, illustrations and colour. Students have also had a turn at creating their own front covers to persuade the reader ‘not to open’. Students will engage in structured discussions to share the choices they have included in their front cover, listen to classmates and ask questions to promote deeper discussions.
Across many classrooms, students have been participating in a collaborative learning structure called ‘chalk talk’ to identify the key choices the author has included on the front cover. In this activity, students are given silent think time, then record their answers on paper without talking. Students can also tick other student ideas if they were thinking similar ideas. At the end of the time, the students use dialogue to share their ideas. It has been terrific watching classes use this strategy to deepen knowledge and understanding.

Care for Learning in Year 6
We have had another wonderful week of learning in Year 6. Our Year 6 students are currently working on their Speaking and Listening skills. Students are required to develop and articulate a point of view on a short story and intelligently discuss this opinion with their peers. In a world becoming more and more interconnected, yet in many ways disconnected, the skill to engage with others is such a powerful skill that I am proud we teach our students.
In Mathematics, our students are working on how to recognise properties of prime, composite, square and triangular numbers and calculating area and perimeter. In 6V this week I saw students engaging in solving problems and collaborating using a strategy called ‘Rally Coach’ to support each other with their learning about area and perimeter. Well done Year 6!

AR Millionaires
We have had plenty of visitors to the Hub this week as students get closer to their Term 1 AR goals. There is still time to read and quiz over the next week, and of course everyone is welcome to borrow a book or two for the holidays! The Hub is open from 8.15am every morning and until 3pm every afternoon!
Late last week Lucy reached her first goal for the year – reading 1 million words in AR! Congratulations Lucy – what a super start to the beginning of the school year.
Get creative by reading in the school holidays!
While I’m so looking forward to reading a few of the fiction books in my ‘to read’ pile, the holidays are also a great time to read some non-fiction books. Perhaps there is a book you can read to help with a special project? To support your planning we have a special display in the Hub highlighting some of our books that include creative projects. Pop on down to borrow one now!
Like most worthy things, learning to read occurs when we continue to practise the associated skills and processes. The school holidays are a great time to read, read and read! Reading can involve a range of texts including books, brochures, TV guides, recipes, instructions, newspapers and websites. What will you read this holidays?
Mango Hill State School is starting an After School club from Wednesday 26 April . Please enrol as there are limited spaces available.
Have a fantastic week
