Safe and Supportive School Environment
At Mango Hill SS we are committed to providing a safe and supportive school environment. We explicitly teach students how to follow rules, get along with others, look after their mental health, manage disagreements and conflicts using the High 5 and we provide a large number of wellbeing strategies and positive play options.
At Team Mango we have been working hard to challenge the status quo and to learn from evidence the best ways to teach students to self- regulate. Some of the terms you may hear us refer to include the following.
- Consistent Predictable Adults: Our moral imperative is to help students manage their emotions. To do this we need to be able to self-regulate ourselves so we have the capacity to co-regulate with our students. We need to lend our calm rather than join the chaos they may be feeling. They mirror us and a calm response will assist them to de-escalate and begin to regulate their emotions.
- Consistent Predictable Routines help create a sense of security, safety and belonging through establishing clear expectations. We can have clear routines for entering a classroom, routines for when students are in a room, exiting a room, transition routines, fun routines (like Ready to Learn Breaks) and routines for when we or our students are not ready to teach or learn.
- Unconditional Positive Regard means every day is a new day. When our students walk into our school we see them as a whole person and separate the student from their behaviour. Each of our students deserve to hear their name said with kindness and care every day.
Some students need additional support to manage their behaviour. This may be due to anxiety, health needs or many other factors. This year we will continue to focus on high standards of behaviour while providing appropriate adjustments and support to students who require a differentiated approach. We are excited by the wellbeing strategies we have been learning through the Berry Street Education Model PD and further strategies to build regulation in students.
ALL students benefit from learning strategies for their social and mental wellbeing and our staff have been using a range of strategies to support students. One strategy we use frequently are Ready to Learn (R2L) breaks. These are student-centred, short-burst, regulatory activities that support students to ready the brain for learning. These breaks may be energy-up breaks with movement and action; or a calm-down break like meditation and breathing to de-escalate the energy.
We look forward to working in partnership with parents and students to build a safe and supportive environment helping every student learn to manage their big emotions and develop tools for self-regulation. Look at these students engaged in R2L activities!

Let’s work together!
I would like to thank the vast majority of parents and carers who show consideration and courtesy toward each other in the carpark and surrounding areas. We understand the frustration of congestion, however it is vital that we all work together to ensure students are safe.
Our Safe School Travel Committee met again yesterday and celebrated the achievements to date. We also discussed next steps. Special thanks to Cr Shipway and the team from MBRC, The Office of Steven Miles, TMR, Translink, our P & C President and DoE representatives who are all supporting our school and community to improve the safe travel options for students.
We are currently focused on ensuring the infrastructure is in place to promote active travel. The vast majority of students and families live close enough to utilise active travel options and we are working with MBRC and TMR to ensure the facilities and crossing supervisors are best placed to promote safe and active travel.
A few ways that you can help include the following.
- Please be considerate of neighbours and do not park across their driveway or on footpaths or block the path to and from their home.
- Stick to the speed limit around the school and keep an eye out for children.
- Leave disabled car spaces for those with permits.
- Only pick up or drop off in appropriate places. Stopping and dropping in the middle of the carpark is dangerous for children and inconsiderate of others. Why would you put your child at this risk when there is a designated drop off zone? Is it worth the risk?
- Discuss the route your child will be taking if they travel actively. Please discourage crossing at Topaz Drive. It is best that students use the crossings where there are supervisors to assist them. At the back of the school, students should not be crossing the road near the roundabout. Help your child plan the safest route if using active travel!
I appreciate your continued support as we focus on safe travel for all students.
Helping our Planet!
Our Year 5 and 6 students are about to embark on a push to recycle containers within our school. Once they are underway we will extend this down to P-Year 4 classes in the coming months and play our part in helping recycle.
You can also help! If you take containers to a ‘Containers for Change” collection point, you can choose to donate this money to the P & C who have traditionally given this money back to our Eco-warriors for further projects to enhance the environment and address sustainability concerns. Please consider donating to the Mango Hill State School Parents and Citizen Association - Active Account: C10139236.
Have a wonderful week

The Care Class focus that will be delivered this Friday is ‘Ready to Learn’. We will be consolidating this focus throughout next week.
We will be learning to Care for Self by being ‘Ready to Learn” and discussing how this will look, feel and sound. Being Ready to Learn means the following.
- I am calm and in control of myself.
- I am prepared and listening to my teacher when she/he speaks.
- I am doing the learning my teacher has asked me to do.
- I am completing any tasks that my teacher has asked me to do.
Just like us, our students can think best and plan ahead when they are feeling calm and positive. By developing each students’ ‘Ready to Learn” plan we are helping them to identify cues and use strategies so they will be able to continue the learning. These strategies might include.
- taking a short walk with a friend
- having a drink
- having a quick break with a favourite book
- sitting calmly in a tee-pee or play tent.
Team Mango - Volunteering at Mango Hill
At Mango Hill State School we are proud of the partnership we have with our parents, carers and community. Part of this partnership is the rich experience our volunteers provide our school. If you would like to volunteer and contribute to our school there are many ways you can. You can volunteer in a classroom to help support learning. You can volunteer through the P&C. You can volunteer by assisting in the canteen. You can volunteer in the Hub to assist with resourcing. The opportunities are endless. The school is holding a series of induction sessions for people interested in volunteering. Prior to volunteering you need to attend one induction session. Thank you to the large group who attended last week’s induction session. Below are the dates and times of upcoming sessions.
- Friday 10 March at 8:45am
- Monday 13 March at 5:30pm
- Monday 20 March at 2pm
Team Mango!
This term we have been learning all about working as a team and being part of #TeamMango. To be part of a team means to work together, help each other, support one another and care for each other. As a team we know we can accomplish great things! In Prep W this week we reached our #TeamMango goal! Every time Mrs Watson saw us working together she gave us a marble for our tub. When the tub was filled to the rim we were able to have a class celebration. I wonder what it will be? We are very proud of ourselves and how well we have been working together and super excited about our class reward.
Please enjoy these photos of Prep W.

In maths, we’re learning to partition numbers in different ways. Partition is a maths word for “break into parts”. When we can think flexibly about a number, we deeply understand the value of that number.
So… 56 is 5 tens and 6 ones.
56 is also:
10 10 20 10 6
16 10 10 10 10
26 30 40 10 6
When we can quickly and fluidly break up numbers into parts, we are learning the true value of that number. We are also learning to add and what’s more or what’s less.
And if we can do this with numbers to 100, then we are in the very best place to build our mathematical understanding for when the numbers get bigger!
How can you support us at home? By helping us to practise counting in all the different ways! If we are confident with counting and we can count in 1s, 2s, 5s, 10s it helps us to be super efficient when we’re working with numbers. We are also often “right” the first time and don’t have to recount because we mistrust our count.
Take a look at students in 1R breaking numbers into parts!

Going Wild in Year 2
The Year 2s went wild this week when they visited the Reptile Adventures show. The presenter Claudine, entertained the students by showing off her amazing collection of native Australian reptiles and amphibians. There were snakes, bearded dragons, skinks, frogs, lizards, turtles and pythons. Not only did the students get to learn all about these animals but they got up close and personal, even getting to handle some of these amazing creatures.
Here’s what some of the children in 2R said about the show….
‘I loved the crocodile and the snake. It was great when the snake rolled over our legs.’ – Tiffany.
‘The gecko was my favourite. I saw it eating bugs.’ – Xavier.
‘The frog was so cute.’ – Mali.
‘My favourite part was when the snake slithered all over our legs.’ – Hailey.
This fabulous incursion will become the stimulus for the children’s writing assessment as they recount about their experiences at the show.

Celebrating Team Mango!
This term our teachers are working hard across the school to develop the children’s sense of being part of a team. Not just any team…. but part of the greatest team of all…. Team Mango! In every classroom teachers are focusing in on teaching children cooperative skills and recognising pro-social behaviours.
Teachers acknowledge the team work of their students in different ways across the school. In Year 2, our teachers acknowledge the children’s efforts by noticing and naming the pro-social behaviour and adding a mango to a mango tree. When the tree is full of mangos that is a sign that the class has been working well as a team and they celebrate with a small class celebration.
Ask your child how their class is acknowledging their collective efforts around team work.
Have a wonderful week
Learning in Year 3
Our Year 3 students are focusing on place value in Math. At the same time, they are learning to identify examples of symmetry in the environment, fold shapes and images to show symmetry, classify shapes as symmetrical and non-symmetrical, use appropriate language to describe features of 2D shapes, and represent symmetry. It was great to be part of the lesson in 3T as students did a gallery walk of posters created by peers about symmetrical and non-symmetrical shapes. Lots of great discussion!
Last Thursday, our students engaged in a practice NAPLAN test. The purpose of this was to give students the opportunity to log in and to become familiar with the way the App works. Class teachers have been in contact with some of you and will continue to reach out to parents where there was a concern with the App. If you have ongoing concerns or questions about NAPLAN, please check in with your child’s class teacher, our Inclusive Learning Teacher, Ms Tanner, or with me.
Playing in Year 3
One of the play options at both breaks in Year 3 is the middle years undercover and surrounding areas. Students play handball, play other small group games or sometimes just sit and chat together. Please encourage your child to try out all the play options available at breaks.
Our signs have arrived!
We have placed some signs to assist parents select their waiting area in the afternoon. The two options are Piazza and Middle Years Undercover. Thank you for showing care for our learning!
Check out these happy faces below.

Number Facts
At MHSS we place a high value on students learning and knowing their number facts. Number facts are simple addition, subtraction, multiplication or division number sentences. They are the number sentences that students are expected to ‘just know’.
‘Just knowing’ these facts is not easy as there are so many to learn. Because of this, it is important that students have strategies for calculating simple number facts, while they learn and become more fluent with them. Therefore, we prioritise a strategy-focussed approach to learning number facts, whereby students have the opportunity to practise their facts through games and activities, but are also explicitly taught how to find an answer when they don’t know it.
Students practise their number facts regularly at school. Ask them to teach you a game they have learned and join in the fun! Check out 4G participating in a Quiz-Quiz-Trade collaborative activity to help each other develop fluency with their facts.
Italian Mask Making
This week, our Year 4 students have loved making their masks during Italian lessons. Our students have been using language to explore the celebration of Carnevale and have discovered the significance of cultural practices of Carnevale, including the costumes. Have a look at some of our students' fabulous creations.

Care for Learning in Year 5
It was another wonderful week of learning in Year 5 classrooms. Our students are continuing to deepen their knowledge of the narrative and persuasive writing genres. I have loved walking into classrooms and talking to students about their ideas and the extended responses they have developed. I really enjoyed visiting 5B this week to discuss their writing. I appreciated listening to students talk about some of the deliberate choices they made to create tension in their narrative writing. Great job 5B! I loved visiting 5G this week and celebrating their work in Maths. I particularly loved hearing their responses to a ticket out the door question and watching students display their understanding of fractions. Well done Year 5!

Care for Learning in Year 6
Over the past 5 weeks it has been so nice to see our Year 6 students engaged and excited about writing their own short stories. Students have been working towards making their writing engaging for their peers to read. When I have been reading their stories, I have noticed the look of anticipation on student’s faces, waiting until I get to the ‘twist’ to see how I react. I have been impressed with their creativity and the way they have used different features to make their stories exciting to read. I am looking forward to reading as many as I can over the next week.

Parliament House Excursion
Our Year 6 students were wonderful representatives of our school on their visits to Parliament House in Week 5 and 6. The students went on a tour starting at the Parliamentary Annexe. During the tour they visited and learned about the Legislative Council (Red Chamber), the Honour Boards, the Mace, the Wind Yarn (the Parliament’s didgeridoo) and the leadlight window. Students also visited Old Government House. They enjoyed their lunch and a play in the Botanical Gardens. Our students should be so proud of the way they exhibited our Mango Hill State School values during the excursions. Well done Year 6!
Have a super week

Accelerated Reader
Great work to all of those eager readers who have been borrowing and quizzing over the last couple of weeks. It has been great hearing all of the ‘good news stories’ as students move up levels step by step. There is still plenty of time left this term to reach a goal, so now might be the right time to set some new goals. Would your child like to reach a particular level? Would they like to pass a number of successful quizzes? Would they like to read a specific number of words?
For some students reaching the very top of AR is their goal. Last week Lucy reached this amazing milestone – she is now at AR 9.0 which is where we stop! This fabulous achievement is a result of Lucy’s commitment to reading and AR quizzing over the last few years. Congratulations Lucy! Lucy will now be able to continue to read and quiz – but at any level!
The Hub is open every morning from 8.15am and until 3pm every afternoon. Don’t forget to bring a library bag to help care for our environment, including our precious books. Sadly this week we have had several books returned that were very wet… which means we will need to replace these. Please help us take care of our books by keeping them away from water bottles and lunch boxes.
Writing in English
The English curriculum includes 3 modes – all of which are important for communicating. The modes are speaking and listening, reading and viewing, and writing. Writing is an important skill to develop as it allows us to communicate with others, even if they are far away. For many of us our writing probably includes lists, notes, emails and maybe a birthday card or two. At school we also build our writing skills to share ideas through recounts, stories and arguments. Our Year 3 and 5 students are busy exploring the ways in which writing a story to entertain is different to writing an argument to persuade.
Talking about writing, modelling how you write and celebrating all attempts at writing are all important ways to support our young writers. We look forward to celebrating their successes as they complete their Term 1 writing tasks in the next couple of weeks.
Have a fantastic week

Pine Rivers District Sporting Trials (10-12yr Old’s)
Pine Rivers District School Sport offers 10-12 Year old students the opportunity to try and make the Pine Rivers District team for a variety of sports. If successful, they compete at Metropolitan North trials and carnivals, with the possibility of selection into teams competing at State events. Students must be nominated by their school in order to attend a district trial or carnival.
District trials are held at various venues within the Pine Rivers District (e.g. Les Hughes Sports Complex) and are not attended by MHSS staff. A Pine Rivers District Coach and Manager will facilitate the trial.
Students who express an interest to trial can collect forms from our PE office. They will be given the Pine Rivers District forms and the relevant trial information. Completed district forms are to be returned to the PE office by the due date. Once the forms are collated, students will be nominated for the trial. Forms are then handed back to students and must then be taken to the coach/manager at the District Trials. Students will NOT be allowed to trial if district forms are not handed in completed. Unless specifically organised by the school, it is the parents’ responsibility to transport students to and from district trials.
Most Pine Rivers District trials are limited to students turning 11 or 12 years of age and who are considered at a high level in the sport e.g. Div. 1 or A Grade. Cross Country, Athletics and Swimming trials however are open for students turning 10, 11 and 12 years of age. Sports that students are able to trial for include the following.
- AFL
- Basketball
- Cricket
- Football (Soccer)
- Golf
- Hockey
- Netball
- Rugby League
- Rugby Union
- Softball
- Squash
- Tennis
- Touch
- Triathlon
Mango Hill can normally nominate up to three students for each district sport trial. If more than three students wish to be nominated Mango Hill will select the three best candidates for the trial. The selection of these students may be either based on past performances/current club form or through a selection trial at school.
If you are interested in your child trialling for Pine Rivers District more information can be obtained from the Mango Hill State School newsletter, with regular trial updates listed. You can also contact Mr Nick Hills - nhill96@eq.edu.au (MHSS PE Teacher) so he is aware of your intention to attend the trial.
MHSS Cross Country (Year Prep-6)
