Thank you Volunteers
On Monday afternoon we joined with many of our 2022 volunteers enjoying afternoon tea and thanking them for their contribution this year. So many parents have assisted in classrooms, in the canteen, in the hub, in the office, at special events, with excursions and swimming. We also have a terrific group of parents who contribute to our P & C Committee.
We are grateful to all our volunteers for their contribution of time and energy. Your children love seeing you take an active role and we are so appreciative of your efforts. Thank you!

Instrumental Music Concert
We are looking forward to our instrumental evening tonight where our students will showcase their learning for this year. I can’t wait to hear them perform!
A special thanks to our 2023 music teachers Emma Nicolopoulos. Malcolm James, Fiona Newey, George Stylianou, Claire Morrell and Janet Almond. What super stars!
The Care Class focus that will be delivered this Friday is ‘Images of the future”. We will be consolidating this focus throughout next week.
By imaging the future, we are Caring for Self, and thinking about what is important to us by creating a picture in our mind. Visualising can help to achieve many things in life. Expecting the best and believing that a positive future is possible can transform one’s future.
This focus is strongly associated with a growth mindset.
Company Portal deadline – Week 9
Thank you to all of the families who have connected to Company Portal in recent weeks. From Week 9, our old Wi-fi network, iDET, will not be available. Any students who are not connected to the new Wi-fi, EQNET, which requires Company Portal to be downloaded and signed into, will no longer have access to the internet.
If you are still having difficulty with downloading and/or signing into Company Portal for your child, please contact the ePAL support team at epal@mangohillss.eq.edu.au.
Think U Know Cybersafety presentation for parents
Our school will be hosting a ThinkUKnow cybersafety presentation on Wednesday 30th November at 6pm in the Wandani Centre. All parents and carers are encouraged to attend.
ThinkUKnow Australia is an evidence-based education program delivered nationally to keep children safe online.
ThinkUKnow Australia is a partnership between the Australian Federal Police, Microsoft Australia, Datacom and the Commonwealth Bank of Australia. The program is delivered in collaboration with policing partners New South Wales Police Force, Northern Territory Police, Queensland Police, South Australia Police, Tasmania Police, Western Australia Police, as well as Neighbourhood Watch Australasia.
This is a fantastic opportunity for you to learn more about young people and the online environment, and how you can help them to be safe and responsible users of technology.
For more information, you can visit www.thinkuknow.org.au
Online Permission forms are coming!
Next Year Mango Hill State School will use the QParents online permission forms for excursions. Hard copies of permission forms will no longer be sent home with students. This will support our sustainability program by reducing paper and printing. Parents and Carers will have the option to complete the forms via QParents or will need to print their own copy from emails sent and return to the school.
Please see information below about how you can sign up to QParents today.
Parent Invitations will be sent each week, check your emails for your personal link.
QParents is a secure, online portal that is free for all Queensland state schools to use and provides parents with quick, easy access to their student information including:
- student and attendance details
- behaviour information
- report cards and assessment planners
- timetables and upcoming events
- invoices and payment history
- Online Permission forms.
The student information displayed in QParents is surfacing information that is already recorded and managed in OneSchool. The benefits of using QParents for schools and parents include:
- a faster, more efficient way to communicate with parents regarding student information
- a secure, convenient and automated process for parents to pay school invoices
- significant time and effort savings for both your school and parent community
- an innovative online communication tool that’s free of charge for both schools and parents to use.
A demonstration video for QParents is available here.
How can parents get help with QParents?
Parents can seek further information, assistance with registration, advice on how to use QParents or help with technical issues by:
- visiting the QParents help page or downloading the QParents user guide (PDF, 8MB)
- contacting 13 QGOV (13 74 68).

Ready to Hit the Stage
We are so ready to get our dancing shoes on, for our first concert! Well, many of us are. Some of us love to dance but we’re a bit unsure about this stage thing, in front of an audience.
School is a 13 year long game. If your little one freezes on the night or doesn’t get up at all, it’s not the end of the world! We’ve learned to enjoy the subject of dance this semester and we have explored what it means to perform - even if we don’t quite make it all the way to the end.
We’re helping to prepare our Preps by having lots of practices at Gigum Hall and by exploring the space without a crowd, so that we feel comfortable in the performance space. Even with all this preparation, it still might not go to plan on the night. And that’s okay!
You might think things are winding down in Prep Land... but even though we’re finishing up our assessment tasks, we’re still focused on learning. We have two and a bit weeks of time to cram in as much fun, adventure and learning into our Prep year that we can! We know that when we leave for our “big holiday” as readers and writers, there’s a much stronger chance of us retaining the skills we have learned and starting Year 1 strong. The Prep teaching team have been looking at our yearly overviews for English and Maths and revisiting those things that our Preps found tricky to learn in the first place, giving them another ‘push’ in this, before the break.

Number Facts in Year 1
As part of our Mathematics program across Mango Hill, students in Years 1-6 learn strategies for recalling number facts. In Year 1, we focus on teaching simple addition and subtraction number facts that involve counting on and counting back.
The Count On strategy can be used when adding the numbers 0, 1, 2, or 3 to a given number without having to count the larger number. Students identify the larger number and quickly count on to get the answer. This strategy is sometimes known by other names such as ‘start big, count small’ or ‘think big, count on’.
Here are some examples of counting on.

The Count Back strategy is used when the number to be taken away is small (e.g. 1, 2 o r 3). Students can quickly count back from the larger number. This strategy is also sometimes referred to as the ‘start big, count back small’ strategy. Students are ready to use the count back subtraction strategy once they can count backwards in ones.
Here are some examples of counting back.

Look at these children in 1D and 1C practising their number facts.

There are so many fun ways to practise number facts at home. One of my favourites is playing Snap +1.
What You Need
- Deck of cards – remove picture cards, Ace refers to 1 in this game
- Two or more players
How to Play
- Just like snap, cards are dealt face down to all the players.
- Each player takes turns to turn one card from their pile over and places this in the middle. However, instead of slapping the pile of cards and saying snap when two cards match, in this game of snap plus one, the pile of cards are snapped only when the new card is one more than the previous card. For example if 5 is placed in the middle and the new card placed on top is 6, players may slap the pile. The quickest player to slap the pile and say snap picks up all the cards.
- When any player runs out of cards, the game is over. The player with the most cards, is the winner.
This game can be played with variations for Snap +2 and Snap + 3. It can also be played as Snap -1, Snap -2 and Snap -3.
These games would be great to play over the holidays to keep practising number facts.
Learning in Year 2
This week we are using our knowledge and practising our skills we have learned across the year. This sometimes looks like questions being presented in unfamiliar ways or with some “distracting” information. Year 2 are loving their learning! We are also exploring Year 3, visiting play areas, spending time with Year 3 buddies and making sure we celebrate our awesome year so far!

Take care and have a wonderful week

Technology Project
We are ready to start cooking! This term across Year 3 we have been learning a lot about the transfer of heat and investigating how to apply our understanding to design and create a device that will soften our marshmallows on a camping trip. Students have done a fantastic job working collaboratively to co-construct their portable ovens. I can’t wait to see how they all go next week when they put them to the test!
Wrapping up 2022
As we begin to come to the end of another wonderful year our students at times can start to get a little bit nervous about what might be next. Over the upcoming weeks it is really important to keep reassuring your child about the great things Year 4 has to offer such as camp! Also there are some things that will be the same such as their morning routines and play spaces. Miss O’Brien their Deputy Principal for next year has been visiting classrooms and spending time with our students to support the smooth transition. I must say, I can not believe how much they have all grown this year!
Parents please don’t forget we also get to wrap up the year with our annual Swimming Carnival and Carols. Hope to see you all there!

Have a great week

Fun times in Year 4!
The echoes of cheers have been ringing out across our Year 4 classrooms as students close in on completing final assessments this week. While there has been great satisfaction in the completion of these tasks, our students are still showing a hunger for learning with the Year 4 teachers providing new and fun learning opportunities.
In Technology lessons, I have been blown away by the creativity of our students as they use their knowledge of forces to create a pinball machine. The innovation on display in developing these has been excellent. One machine I saw even had a plan to include sensors for an electronic scoreboard! I look forward to seeing, and perhaps playing, more pinball machines throughout the week!
Leadership Speeches
This week, Year 4 have been invited to listen to the Year 5 leadership speeches. In just 12 months, it will be their turn to be going for the same leadership positions and I know that we have many great candidates across the cohort.
The Year 5 speeches were all fantastic. It is great to know we have such wonderful role models for our students to look up to next year.
Swimming Carnival
The swimming carnival is fast approaching! A reminder that the Year 4 students attend over 2 separate days, depending on what year they were born. Students born in 2013 will attend on Thursday 1 December and students born in 2012, will attend on Friday 2 December. All students are encouraged to attend on their allocated day with opportunities to participate in races, novelty events, have fun in the ‘Splash Zone’ or demonstrate house spirit by cheering on their peers.
Have a super week

Care for Learning in SciConnect
Our Year 6 SciConnect students enjoyed their opportunity at getting outside of their classroom this week and participating in their SciConnect incursion. Students demonstrated curiosity and wonder as they developed their knowledge of space shuttles and rockets. They then showed innovative thinking when they made their own rocket. This consisted of a pre-fabricated rocket that they attached the nozzle to, then filled with fire retardant material adding a tail and the explosive repellent. It was a great opportunity to celebrate our students’ thinking and possibly uncover future NASA scientists. Great work Year
6!

Year 6 Graduation
We are so excited to have our Year 6 Graduation fast approaching. Thank you to all of the families who have returned their RSVP forms to class teachers and to the families that have paid their $20. If you have not done so already please, please, please return your RSVP forms indicating your child is attending and the two adult guests. Please also pay your $20 which will ensure your child receives their year book. This payment is due by Monday 28 November and can be done through QKR app or the office. Simply download the QKR app (details attached) and make payment of $20. Once you download the app go to Mango Hill State School – School Payments – Graduation – add to cart and make payment. We look forward to celebrating your child’s graduation with you and our community.
Student Leadership
Congratulations to all of our Year 5 students who delivered their nomination speech this week to our Year 4 and 5 students. It was inspiring hearing from our next generation of leaders.

Accelerated Reader
As students finish up their AR quizzing for the year, we still have much to celebrate. Congratulations to Anika, who late last week reached her goal of 1 million words. Congratulations also to Johan who has worked quietly and with determination all year. This week he reached his goal of 2 million words. To top off our week of AR Millionaires, Amaan also reached 10 million words. This is a school record and the highest number of words ever read in AR at Mango Hill State School. Amaan is an avid reader and I think is a little sad that he has now completed his last quiz.
Well done to Anika, Johan and Amaan – we are very proud of all of you.
AR quizzing has now finished for 2022. While the word counts begin again at zero in the new year, students will be able to continue reading and quizzing from the level they reached this year. For example, if Suzette has reached 3.6, she will begin reading in 2023 at 3.7.
In the meantime let’s keep reading for fun! I have a large pile of ‘fun’ books waiting for me to start as soon as holidays begin!

Borrowing has finished
Now that borrowing has finished, we are looking forward to receiving back all of the Hub resources. Please look carefully in tidy tubs, school bags and bedrooms to locate all of our precious books. All books should be returned to the Hub as soon as possible.
If any books are lost or damaged, we ask that families replace these with another book. If the lost book is an AR book, we will need you to replace the actual book as AR books are specific and sometimes hard to source. Thank you for your support of our library processes.
Keep on reading!
Even though our Hub has now closed for the year, don’t forget that reading is a habit and one which we want to cultivate. There are always so many things to read including those books that can be borrowed from our local libraries. It is free to join the local library and it is a great place to visit where I’m certain you will find a new favourite book to read.

Students in Years 3-6 who are turning 8 and 9 years old in 2022 (Born 2013 and 2014) will compete on the first day, which will be Thursday 1 December (week 9). Students in Years 3-6 turning 10, 11 and 12 years old in 2022 (Born 2010, 2011 and 2012) will compete on a second day, which will be Friday 2 December (week 9).
Students compete at sporting events, including at representative levels, in age groups, not in year levels. Therefore, our carnival days run to align with this process.
Below is the initial parent information for both days. Students will receive or have received more information at school.
