Congratulations Year 5 Leaders
Last week Mr Winney and I were delighted to interview almost 60 Year 5 students who had completed their Leadership passport. We heard their pride in the school, how they enact our values and why they will be great student leaders next year.
After conducting an initial vote with all Year 5 students, we considered these votes and our interviews to shortlist students. This was very challenging with so many great role models in Year 5. Congratulations to all the students on their conduct and efforts. Students who missed out on being shortlisted have will be in the role of Mango Mentors and still have a leadership role to play next year.
Shortlisted students will present speeches next week to the current Year 4 and 5 students. After these speeches, the children and staff will vote on the students they believe will make great leaders. This will decide our 2023 School Captains, Performing Arts Captains, Sport Captains, Sustainability captains, Reconciliation Leaders and Diversity Leaders.
Parents are welcome to join us for these speeches at the following times.
- Group 1 presenting Tuesday 22 November at 11.30-12.30 in Wandani Centre
- Group 2 presenting Thursday 24 November at 1.30-2.30pm in the Wandani Centre
We will announce all elected captains and leaders at the Year 5 Awards Parade on Tuesday 6 December. Best wishes to all students involved.

A new member of Team Mango arrived recently when our Speech Pathologist, Vicki Doyle, welcomed her new baby. Look at this adorable team mate!
While Vicki Doyle is on maternity leave, we are excited to be working with Emma Mueller, Speech Pathologist. Emma is focused on supporting the achievement of best student outcomes by collaborating with all staff. Early in her career, Emma worked in the Torres Strait where she caught small helicopters and airplanes to remote outer islands to provide Speech Pathology services to the Torres Strait Island people. Her clinical areas of interest include speech, language and literacy. Welcome, Emma!
The Care Class focus that will be delivered this Friday is ‘Personal Values’. We will be consolidating this focus throughout next week.
Students will be learning about “personal values” which are the beliefs and attitudes that guide our behaviour. Our values are a core aspect of a person’s character and by knowing these values and following them, we can work towards being the person you want to be.
Students will be exploring their Personal Values, so they can:
- make choices and follow their goals to support who they want to be as a person.
- help them to identify times when a behaviour or action may not be consistent with their values.
Below are some examples of values and scenarios.

We are Trying so Hard to Be Our Best Selves in Prep!
We are pushing through and reading, reading, reading - trying to become the very best readers that we can before our big holiday.
We are pushing through and writing, writing, writing - trying to become the very best writers that we can before our big holiday.
And of course we are pushing through to solve all the problems - for maths, and in the world, to be the very best problem solvers we can be before our big holiday.
When we’re fatigued, we don’t always make the best decisions with our peers. Our teachers are helping our Preps to solve conflict by using the High Five. Is this something you can solve? Is this something that you need to tell a teacher? Sometimes it’s tricky to decide!
We’re also pushing through to be the very best dancers we can be... and we can’t wait to show you our moves at the upcoming dance concert! We’re rehearsing on the big stage to prepare. Our first time performing on the stage! We can’t wait.
We’ve got this, Prep Team!

Getting Ready for Change
Our Year 1s have been meeting up with the Preps in readiness for 2023. They have been showing the Preps the ropes and giving them a little taste at life in Year 1. Lots of the classes have been meeting up for lunch, getting together for plays on the Year 1/2 playground and joining in for Care Class together. Look at beautiful Ethan from 1H who has welcomed the Preps by designing a sign.

While the Preps have been visiting Year 1, our Year 1s have been visiting some of the Year 2 classrooms. 1H took at tour of the Year 2 classrooms at the end of last week.
Naturally, children can start to get a little anxious as they think ahead to 2023. It can be helpful to make a list of things that will stay the same and things that will change to ease some of that anxiety. Please talk to your classroom teacher if your little one is particularly worried about next year. We are happy to support them with extra transition visits to make them feel more comfortable.
Carols By Candlelight
The Year 1s are very much looking forward to our inaugural Carols by Candlelight event to be held on Tuesday 6 December. I heard some lovely singing coming from 1D this week as they practise.
Don’t forget to logon to the QKR app to pre-purchase a pizza for dinner. You can pick this up at the Canteen between 5:00 – 5:30pm on your way down to the oval. Pizza orders close on Monday 28November at 12:00pm.
Learning in Year 2
The learning continues in Year 2, and as well as our usual learning students are also starting to learn about Year 3. Our class teachers will commence preparing all students to transition to the new year in a new classroom with a new teacher. We do this by class visits to the new play areas, class activities and thinking routines, inviting “experts” from the year level above to visit to share their experiences (in this case of Year 3) and so on. Our Care Class lessons also prepare students for the transition. Of course, all students also get the opportunity to “Meet the Teacher” in Week 10. A small number of students benefit from other types of transition activities and our class teachers are collaborating with our Inclusive Learning teachers to provide those opportunities.
Volunteer Afternoon Tea
Over the year, volunteers contribute in many different ways to our community. We thank each and every person who has contributed to Year 2 this year. Our Volunteer Afternoon Tea is coming up on Monday. If you can make it, we look forward to seeing you there.
Take care and have a wonderful week

Showcasing our Writing
Across Year 3 our students are taking pride in publishing their favourite Writers' Café pieces along with their poetry. It has been a celebration to see students taking on their teacher's feedback and using the Bump it Up Wall to improve their writing. I loved seeing their collaboration of ideas and how they have then crafted poems that connect to the reader. They have done a super job in writing a poem that describes a place and using figurative language that matches the mood and engages the reader. Well done Year 3!
Whilst the Hub is starting to wrap up for the year it might be a great opportunity to connect with your local library. I know I love our local library and my kids do too! They get super excited looking through the huge range of books and coming across new authors. With holidays quickly approaching and families looking for things to do, why not try your local library. Often they also have lots of holiday events and activities. It would be wonderful for our students to keep reading over the break!
Have you read with your child lately? This week ask them about their favourite character or event in the story. I wonder what made them say that?

Have a great week

Feedback to improve!
We are at that stage of the term where students are receiving their final round of feedback to improve their work in all subject areas. At MHSS, you will often see students referencing their scales which have green and blue highlighting, as well as sticky notes, when acting on feedback. On their scales, elements that are highlighted in green, show what students are already able to do. On blue sticky notes, teachers write the next step for students to improve their work. This next step is a sharp and narrow focus for each child and they are able to access a range of supporting resources around the room to apply this feedback.
Over the past week, I have regularly walked into rooms where students have these scales open and their next step in front of them. It is wonderful to see such fantastic student agency applied while acting on the feedback given. Additionally, our teachers have been having lots of 1:1 conferences with students to ensure they are supported and encouraged.
End of year events
We have a lot coming up towards the end of the year. Please keep an eye on the term overview emailed out at the start of the term for these events. In addition to the swimming carnival and the awards ceremony during the last 2 weeks, students will also participate in their class behaviour celebration and will have a transition session with their 2023 class and teacher during this time. We will continue to keep you informed as these events get closer!

Have a super week

Care for Learning in Year 5 and 6
As I visited classrooms this week I observed a lot of classes getting through assessments ready for report cards. This is such a busy and stressful time – well done to our students for their resilience and growth mindset. What has really struck me about classrooms this year is the kindness, connection and collaboration peers have shown each other. I have really picked up on a sense of community as I walk through classrooms or students helping each other. Well done Year 5 and 6!
Year 6 Graduation
Plans are ramping up for the Year 6 Graduation. Please remember to return your RSVP forms to indicate that your child is attending and the two adults that are accompanying them. People can start to arrive from 5pm Wednesday 7 December with formalities beginning at 6:30pm. This will be followed by a disco. Families can purchase food on the night from the three food vans. I also know teachers are busy setting up a PowerPoint with each students' photo from Prep and their Year 6 photo. If you have not done so already, please send these photos to the class teacher.
Student Leadership
Well done to all of our Year 5 students who participated in their student leader interview over the last week. Before the end of week 7 Ms Egan and I will shortlist candidates who will deliver a speech to our Year 4s and 5s. This shortlisting process can be difficult and we will use the votes of our Year 5 students. Remember students, you are all leaders in our school. I look forward to listening to some fantastic speeches next week.

Scholastic Book Club
All of our Book Club orders have now been delivered to students and classrooms. Please let us know if these did not arrive. Thanks to all the families who supported Book Club this year. Your generosity ensures that we are able to continue to purchase new books for the Hub. Special thanks to our willing volunteers who sorted the books – we are very grateful for your time and enthusiasm.
Returning all books
This week is the last week for all borrowing. This means that we are keen to have all of the Hub books returned as soon as possible. Don’t forget to have a good look in tidy trays, school bags and even under the bed to locate as many MHSS books as possible. For lost or damaged books, we ask families to replace the book. For AR books, the replacement book needs to be the exact title and author, as these books are often difficult to locate.
Keep on reading!
Even though we are not able to borrow from the Hub until next year, we still want everyone to keep on reading. Don’t forget that the North Lakes library is a free service provided by the Moreton Bay Council. This might be a great place to visit in the coming weeks and I’m confident they will have plenty of choice for some great reads for the holidays.
https://www.moretonbay.qld.gov.au/libraries/Home
The holidays are also a great time to re-read some favourites or to join in with other family members to read favourite picture books, comics, websites and junk mail. Perhaps we will all be lucky enough to receive a few books for Christmas as well! Reading is one of those things that improves with practice – and it is also such a great way to learn about another time, another place and other views of the world. I can’t wait to read some of the many books in my toppling pile of books at home!
AR Millionaires
Congratulations to Lucy who last week reached 3 million words! This is an extraordinary achievement and we are very impressed.
Congratulations also to Amaan, who last week not only reached 8 million words but then 9 million words! He loves reading fat books and is clearly a super quizzer!

We are proud of all of our AR Millionaires, who this year showed such commitment to reading and quizzing. Congratulations to all those whose photo has been added to our special AR Millionaire display. Pop on down to the Hub to have a look at all of these amazing readers!
Have a fantastic week
