We’ve had another fine start to the week. It’s hard to believe we are in Week 6 of Term 2. Students will start to be formally assessed in some of their learning areas. As we approach assessment periods, it's important to remember that these are just one of many ways we gain insight into your child’s learning. At our school, teachers are highly skilled at making assessment adjustments to meet the needs of students—whether that means providing extra time, using different formats, or offering a quiet space to work. You can support your child by encouraging a positive mindset, keeping routines calm and consistent, and reminding them that assessments are an opportunity to show what they know, not something to fear. Together, we can ensure that every child feels supported and confident.
This week we have seen our Year 2s attend the Starlab incursion and some of our students represented our school at the Met North Cross Country trials. We have our senior choir attending Fanfare today and I’m sure, like always, they did so with pride. Our Year 3 students will be participating in Street Science towards the end of the week.
P&C
Report Cards
Semester 1 report cards will be emailed to families next term, on Wednesday, 16th of July. Please ensure the school has the correct email address on record so you don’t miss this important communication. Upcoming newsletters will share more about what to expect on your child’s report card for their year level. Our report cards will look a little different this year due to our implementation of the Australian Curriculum version 9.
Student Leaders
You may have noticed; we are asking our student leaders to step up and take some action this year. Some of the roles you may see our student leaders undertaking include:
- Featuring on the school’s FaceBook page for newsletter updates
- Helping out the front of the school to assist younger students to class
- Putting the flags up
- Helping out in the canteen
Sending out whole school messages by visiting classes
- Collecting gold coins for fundraisers
- Organising our can collection system
- Representing our school at events
These are just some of the ways our student leaders are displaying leadership skills at Mango Hill. We thank them for all that they do.
Reading
Next week, some of our senior leadership team will be visiting one of the schools in our Critical Friends Network (CFN) to view how they are implementing the new approach to reading. This network is in it’s seventh year and we highly value the collaboration we have with them. In Term 3, the CFN will visit us to view our reading implementation.
Reading Competition
Every December, the North Lakes Library hosts a Summer Reading Club. Children who join the club log the number of hours they read over the school holidays and nominate the school they attend. I am proud to announce that Mango Hill State School won 'most hours read' out of the schools in our area. Congratulations to all our students who participated!
Staffing
After taking long service leave, Mrs Wendy Johnson, our amazing teacher aide, has decided to retire. We thank Wendy for all that she has done while working out of our ‘Hub’. We thank her for her commitment to Mango Hill State School students, staff and families. We wish her all the best with her retirement.
Year 6 Camp
Our first cohort of Year 6 students attend camp next week. Camps are a valuable experience for our Year 6 students as they take important steps toward high school. Time away from home encourages independence, responsibility, and problem-solving, while team activities help develop communication and leadership skills in a supportive environment. Camp provides a safe space for students to challenge themselves, build resilience, and strengthen friendships—laying the foundation for a confident and successful transition to high school.
Italian Week
Next week we celebrate Italian Week. I know our Italian teachers have special things planned for our students. This provides us with an opportunity to thank our amazing language teachers for all that they do. Thanks Ms Verster, Ms Victor and Ms McEvoy.
Carpark
Please be courteous in our carpark. We understand that it is very busy at times, please follow the carpark signs and only park in desinated carparking spots.
National Reconcilation week
On 27 May – 3 June we acknowledge National Reconciliation week. The 2025 theme is Bridging Now to Next and reflects the ongoing connection between past, present and future. The theme encourages us to look ahead and continue the push forward as past lessons guide us. Our school will hold a whole school parade on the last Friday of this term to celebrate First Nations culture.
Q Parents Consent
Q Parents Consent: Decodable Readers Australia (DRA)
In alignment with Department policy and the use of the Q Parents platform, we are now seeking annual, school-wide consent for the online programs and subscriptions used at Mango Hill State School.
This week, you will receive a notification on Q Parents requesting consent for a specific program: Decodable Readers Australia (online home reading). Students are required to have consent to participate in each program. Each consent request includes detailed information about the data collected and where it is stored.
If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s year level Deputy Principal.
Thank you for your continued support.

Focus of the Week
This week in Care Class we will be focusing on Care for Self by identifying stress in our bodies. It is important that we are aware of what makes us stressed, especially during assessment. Some physical signs of stress include the following:
- muscles tighten
- heart starts racing
- breath becomes shorter and faster
- thoughts speed up
- getting sweaty
- start feeling a big emotion.
In class, students we will look at ways to de-stress. Some activities may include meditation, deep breathing, going for a walk, having a drink of water, listening to music, counting to 10 and drawing. This can help us to focus, express thoughts more easily, feel happy, listen to instructions and feel more relaxed. When we recognise the signs of stress, we are able to find ways to help so we can be ready to achieve.
Reading at Mango
Last week we looked at what phonemic awareness is and how important it is for our students to effectively learn how to read.
Phonemic awareness also prepares students for Phonics instruction.
Phonics involves matching sounds (phonemes) to letters or groups of letters (graphemes).
A phonics-based approach has been proven time and time again to be the MOST effective way to learn how to read.
Phonics instruction needs to be two things:
Systematic: Follows a structured plan making sure no sound or grapheme is left out.
Synthetic: An emphasis on segmenting and blending. Students learn to segment words into sounds and blend sounds together to make words.

At Mango Hill State School our students in Prep- Year 2 are proudly participating in explicit phonics instruction each day!
Crossing Supervisors
Calling all parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and community members. We are urgently looking for more Crossing Supervisors to help our students and families get across the road before and after school safely.
This is a paid casual job and hours of paid work would be 7:45 am- 8:45 am and 2:30 pm- 3:15 pm. Days are flexible.
If you are interested in joining our team please email aglee39@eq.edu.au
Please note that you must have or be willing to obtain a Blue Card, complete a Criminal History Check, and pass a medical clearance.

Nudgee Beach Excursion
In Week 5 1A, 1B, 1D, 1E, 1G and 1I escaped to Nudgee Beach for a full day of fun and learning. The Nudgee Beach Environmental Education Centre guided our students and teachers along the mangrove boardwalk and Nudgee Beach to discover how different places meet the needs of living things.

1C, 1F, 1H and 1J will be attending on Monday 2 June.
Phonics in 1G
This week in 1G, students were revising the sound (phoneme) /are/. I was so impressed with the encoding (sounding out to spell the words) and dictation the students completed.
Have a great week everyone!

Year 2 Students Explore the Wonders of Space with StarLab!
This week, our Year 2 students had an out-of-this-world experience during the exciting StarLab incursion! The inflatable planetarium took over Gigum Hall, sparking awe and curiosity as students stepped inside to explore the stars, planets, and beyond.
Throughout the session, students were captivated by a guided tour of the night sky and learned fascinating facts about the solar system. The immersive experience brought to life many of the concepts they've been learning in class, helping to deepen their understanding and build rich background knowledge.
This learning experience has perfectly set the stage for their upcoming writing assessment in Weeks 7 and 8, where students will be using their new knowledge to craft informative texts about space. We can’t wait to see the incredible work they produce!

Have a wonderful week.

Spelling Bee Superstars
Congratulations to our superstar spellers in Year 3!
A friendly reminder that donation cards are due back to class teachers this Friday, 30 May. Cash donations can also be made to our P&C before school on Friday.
A big thank you to our P&C and Mrs Barrett for bringing this wonderful event to life once again this year. We also want to give a special shout-out to our amazing Year 3 teachers who dressed up for the occasion—our students thought it was un-bee-lievable!
Before and After School Continued
Last week in the newsletter, I shared our before and after school routines and expectations. I'm pleased to report that we've seen an improvement, with more students heading to the correct areas during these times.
This week, I’d like to highlight the types of games students are playing during breaks. Please note that ball games—such as soccer and football—are not permitted in the Piazza or the Middle Years Undercover Area. This rule also applies to running games, tagging games, and playing in the gardens.
Safety remains our top priority, and these activities can increase the risk of injury. We appreciate your support in helping us maintain a safe and respectful environment for all students.

Year 4 News
While in this digital age we send our newsletter to you electronically, I hope that this image is representative of you and your child – looking forward to receiving and reading the weekly newsletter.
English
Let’s have a look at some of what we have been doing in our Year 4 literacy lessons. This week we continue looking at Morphology lessons…
Here is examples of the lesson structure of a typical week:-
Day 1 – 3:
- Review previously taught elements
- Introduce the new spelling rule and associated conventions
- Reading sentences and inserting the missing word
- Reading and writing words which are examples of the spelling rule
- Dictation – here teachers select sentences read earlier in the day/week
Day 4:
Formative assessment - aka ‘spelling test’ writing words from the week. This information will inform teachers of what they need to review in lessons in the coming week/s.
Year 4 Australia Zoo Excursion
Letters have been sent home about this excursion. Please contact the office if you have not yet received a copy.
Please note that no late payments and inclusions will be accepted after the due date, so please don’t miss out. Payment plans may be organised through the office – contact Ms Kerry Muncy.

Attendance
As part of our attendance policy we are required to record the reason for student absences. If you are able to log in to QParents and amend any ‘unknown’ attendances to the valid reason, it would be greatly appreciated. If you require support with your child’s attendance please don’t hesitate to contact the class teacher or myself gmcca24@eq.edu.au. Positive school attendance is strongly linked to positive academic, social, and health outcomes.
Kaboom
This week, as part of The Arts program, Year 5 students will participate in the Kaboom incursion. Kaboom is a performing percussion group which demonstrates multiple aspects of the science of sound production in a fun and engaging way. Students are active participants in the experience, and use every day recycled objects as well as body percussion to create rhythms and grooves throughout the show.
Maths
In Maths, Year 5 students have been working on complex financial problems that involve multiple steps to solve including rounding and estimation. Students have been exploring the practical implications of rounding. In a financial context rounding up may be beneficial for budgeting purposes, however rounding down may lead to you not having enough money to purchase goods and services. This is similar to a builder estimating the length of timber, if they round down to the nearest 10 they may leave themselves short for the build.
Have a great week!

Deputy Principal- Year 5

Transitions to secondary
In the next few weeks, all Year 6 parents will receive a survey, requesting information regarding your child’s high school for 2026. This information is important for us so that we can support their new schools to ensure a smooth transition. Please keep an eye out for this survey and if you have any problems with accessing or completing it, let us know.
Learning in Year 6
Last Thursday I enjoyed visiting half of our Year 6 classrooms for our Learning Walks and Talks during our Year 6 Morphology lessons. Each term, every class in the school is visited by the Principal, two members of the leadership team, and some teachers. The purpose of these Learning Walks and Talks is to talk with students and get an understanding of how clear they are about what they are learning. To do this, our discussion with students is guided by the following questions:
- What phonemes/ morphemes/sound/spelling rule are you learning? – Learning intention
- How/Can you read/decode a word that uses that sound/phoneme/morpheme?
- Can you write a word that uses that sound/phoneme/morpheme?
- What are you finding tricky or easy?
- How do you feel about reading?
I was particularly impressed with how well our Year 6 students can talk about their learning using key vocabulary, and knowing the routines of their lessons.
I’m always amazed by the quality teaching and learning on display when going on Learning Walks and Talks at our school!
Graduation
Thank you to our Graduation Committee who met for the first time last Wednesday night. It was a productive meeting with decisions already being locked in. We are excited to plan an exciting celebration for the class of 2025! Keep an ear out for upcoming opportunities to volunteer to help raise money for graduation.
