Welcome to Week two. Students have made a fantastic start to Term 3.
This term we will continue progressing our focus on implementing the Australian Curriculum V9 in English, Maths and some aspects of HPE. Reading will also continue to be a driver in our explicit improvement agenda. I’m very proud of our school’s implementation of the new approach to reading. Staff have worked tirelessly to develop their knowledge and modify pedagogy to enact the latest research in the teaching of reading. Our students have been fabulous, and we think they are super clever as they are developing their reading skills but are also using such sophisticated language to describe how they are reading. Even our preppies are using words such as phonemes, graphemes and syllables. Our senior students are using words such as morphemes, suffixes and pre-fixes. Well done to Team Mango on their gains.
School Opinion Survey
Soon each family will receive an email inviting you to participate in the School Opinion Survey (SOS). We value your feedback and would love to know what we are doing well and areas for improvement. The survey takes approximately 5 – 10 minutes to complete. It would be appreciated if you could participate, even if you think we are doing a great job!
Prep Outdoor Play
I’m excited to announce that our Prep outdoor play area is now ready to use! Doesn’t it look fabulous. Thank you to Mrs Virgo for working on this project and thank you to our parents, carers and students for your patience with this.

Award Ceremonies
This week Award Ceremonies are being held. Congratulations to all students receiving an award. Some students were so close and just missed out. I want you to know that we are very proud of all students doing their very best.
South East QLD Football Championships
On Monday our Year 5 and Year 6 soccer teams participated in the South East QLD Football Championships. They did our school proud. Year 5, 1st place overall and Year 6, 2nd place overall. A big thank you to students and attending parents for assisting on the day. A huge thank you also to Mr Newell for his passion and dedication to these students and our school’s soccer program.

Lions Junior Public Speaking Competition
On Tuesday and Wednesday, some of our Year 5 and 6 students participated in round one of the Lions Junior Public Speaking Competition, held at our school during lunch time. A big congratulations to those students who bravely took the step to get up and speak in front of their peers. Round two will be coming up for selected students, and we will be taking two students from each grade 5 and 6 to round three finals next term.
Today we welcomed our 2026 Prep students to our school and they participated in a Music and Movement session. These sessions book out quickly. If you have a child commencing Prep at Mango Hill in 2026, and you haven’t enrolled them yet please reach out to the school as soon as possible. Please also find below a copy of the pre-prep dates for the remainder of the year.
Excursions
Next week is the week of excursions with Year 3 students attending the Caboolture Historical Village and the remaining Year 6 students attending the Parliament House excursion. Our Year 2 students will also be participating in a HASS incursion.
We have selected students trialling for the Pine Rivers Track and Field team and our Junior Choir will be representing our school at the Pine Rivers Show. We wish all students the best of luck and know you will make us proud.
Staffing
We welcome Ms Chloe McLaren to the Prep teaching team and Zoe Holt to our Year 3 teaching team. I know you will join with me in welcoming both of them to Team Mango.

Focus of the Week
This week in Care Class we will focus on Care for Self by identifying our emotions. We will also revisit the Ready Scale to help us better manage our feelings and some big emotions. Throughout the day your feelings might fluctuate, and it is okay to be at different points on the scale. It is okay to go through all these emotions but it is not okay to let your emotions control you. Always be your best and do your best! When we Care for Self, we recognise how we are feeling and use a strategy to self-regulate or seek help appropriately from adults to co-regulate. Do you have a favourite strategy to help you regulate?
Reading at Mango
The last of the Big 6 is Oral Language. Oral Language is the foundation for all literacy development and plays a crucial role in children's overall learning. Through speaking and listening, children build vocabulary, develop comprehension skills, and learn to express their thoughts clearly and confidently. Strong oral language skills support reading, writing, and thinking across all areas of the curriculum. At school, we encourage rich conversations, storytelling, questioning, and active listening to nurture these essential skills. Families can support this at home by engaging in regular discussions, asking open-ended questions, and reading aloud together. Investing in oral language now sets children up for success in all areas of learning.
This term, from Prep-Year 6, all students will be creating a spoken text. From creating a short, spoken text to retell an experience in Prep to creating a vlog to present an argument to a person of importance in Year 6. All of us here at Mango Hill are excited to build on the skills already developed in Term 1’s speaking and listening unit.
P&C News
Cookie drive has arrived!!!!
In last week's newsletter we gave you the heads-up about the cookie drive as our major fundraiser for the year. Well, the time has come! Letters have been sent out this week to explain the process and what is needed from you. We're hoping everyone can get involved and sell a box or two (or three, or as many as you can)!
Key dates for the cookie drive
25 July - all opt in/out letters are to be returned to the school
1 August - box/es of cookies to be collected (handed out either to your child, or you will come and collect them between 2pm and 3pm from Gigum, depending on how you have responded in the opt in/out letter)
22 August - all boxes and money are to be returned to the school. Collection point will be back at Gigum.
Please pop these dates in your calendars so you don't forget!
Sales will be cash only and there will be an envelope in each box for the money to go into.
Did you know?
To make this fundraiser even sweeter, we’re offering 12 amazing hampers for the top 12 sellers across the school! Whether you’re selling to family, friends, or neighbors, every box you sell gets you one step closer to winning. The more you sell, the better your chances - so let’s get out there and spread the cookie love! Who will be the top seller and snag one of these fabulous hampers? It could be you!
Uniform Shop
Welcome back after the break! It feels like winter has truly decided to finally begin. As the mornings are chillier, we have all our winter stock available. Students are able to wear zip up jackets or polycotton jumpers and tracksuit pants if they are feeling the cold. Please make sure you label your jackets and jumpers to ensure a faster return to you if they are lost.
We are very busy at the store at the moment. If we are unable to answer the phone, please leave a message and we can call you back. Alternatively you can place your order online. Orders can be placed through our website any time at
www.wearitto.com.au/schools/mango-hill-state-school
Orders are packed through our uniform shop during opening hours and an email is sent to let you know when your order is ready to be picked up, or if you you'd like your student to bring the uniforms home with them, email us at mangohill@wearitto.com.au with your student's name and class name and we can get it to them.
If you need to leave a message on our phone service, please leave your name and number so we can call you back. We are unable to see the number you call from, so can only return calls where a phone number as been provided.
Did you know we have a retail store? If you need uniform items you can find our store "Wearitto" at 41 Kirby Road, Aspley. They operate regular retail hours and can be reached on 3263 - 5566.

iPads
Thank you for your preparation in getting iPads ready for this semester. The Prep learners are doing a great job in using their devices carefully and as directed by their teachers. Here are Prep A students using their iPads to support English by recording sentences about experiences that they are retelling to others.

If you require username and password information, please contact your class teacher.
If you are having any technical difficulties, please contact ePal@mangohillss.eq.edu.au
Art Incursion
Last week we sent out the permission forms for the upcoming Art Workshop that will take place in school. We received $1000 from the proceeds of last year’s ArtsFest to put toward the development of art skills in Prep. We chose to use this to subsidise the upcoming workshop which is now costing families just $3 per child! Please ensure you return permission and payment by Friday 25 July, late payments cannot be accepted.
Prep 2026
Enrolment interviews commence this week for Prep 2026. If you have a child who will be coming to Mango Hill for Prep next year, please submit your enrolment paperwork and book an interview as soon as possible. We look forward to meeting you and your child soon!

Daily phonics review plays a vital role in helping your child become a confident and fluent reader. In Year 1, consistent practice with sounds and letter patterns strengthens the foundational skills needed for reading and writing. We use retrieval practice—a powerful learning strategy that encourages children to recall and apply what they've previously learned—to help this knowledge stick. Regular review also helps manage cognitive load by keeping information familiar and readily accessible, reducing the mental effort required to learn new content.
Thank you to 1A and 1B for showcasing the magic of their daily review!

Year 1 Phonics Check
Consent for the Year 1 Phonics Check is now active on QParents. There are also paper copies in the school office should you not have QParents. Please provide consent as soon as possible so we can make preparations for the check. Thank you to all parents who have done this already, we appreciate your support.
Have a wonderful week everyone.

Stepping into History Incursion
Our Stepping into History incursion will take place on Thursday 31 July and Friday 1 August 2025. Class teachers will confirm which day your child’s class will attend.
To ensure your child can participate in this exciting learning opportunity, please provide consent through QParents and make payment of $12 by this Friday, 25 July. Please note that not all financial institutions process payments immediately, so allow for any delays. Unfortunately, late payments or permissions can no longer be accepted.
If you require support with payment, please contact the school office to discuss options.
Is it Bullying? Understanding the Difference Matters
We are seeing an increase in students and parents using the term bullying to describe situations where a child has experienced someone being unkind or unfair. While these situations can be upsetting and may require support, they don’t always meet the definition of bullying.
It’s important that, as adults, we use accurate language when talking with children to help them respond appropriately and build resilience. True bullying is repeated, intentional, and involves a power imbalance. A one-off mean comment or a disagreement between peers, while it may need addressing, is not bullying.
To help clarify the difference, I’m sharing the attached infographic, “Is It Bullying?”, which outlines how to distinguish between rude, mean, and bullying behaviours. I encourage you to read through it with your child.
At school, we use the Hi-5 strategy as a practical tool for responding to conflict in a safe and respectful way. I’ve attached a copy of our Hi-5 graphic below. You can support your child by reinforcing this approach at home when discussing friendship challenges or navigating tricky social situations.
Wishing everyone a wonderful week ahead.

Cool News Story
This term, our English unit is all about speaking and listening—and our students are rising to the challenge! Each student is rehearsing a short talk about their favourite activity, helping them build confidence and communication skills in a fun, personal way.
As part of this, classes are also taking part in a "Cool News Story" segment, where students have one minute to share something they find interesting or exciting. It’s been a fantastic opportunity for them to connect personal experiences with storytelling. I’ve been truly impressed by the creativity, courage, and enthusiasm our students have shown so far!
Attendance Matters
Regular attendance is a key expectation across all state schools, and it plays a vital role in every student’s learning and success. While we understand that illness can happen occasionally, it’s been wonderful to see so many of our students striving to attend all five days each week.
Did you know that missing just one day of school each week adds up to over eight weeks of missed learning across the year? Every day counts. If you need support with your child’s attendance or have any concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out to their teacher. We’re here to help.
Deputy Principal
Teachers reminded students of our school routines and expectations and with settled classes were able to get straight into the business of teaching and learning.
Here is the Big Purpose for our Term 3 English unit and the first of our Mathematical units this term:
English
Purpose: To create a spoken argument to share opinions and information about a sustainable action for our school.
Maths
Purpose: To represent, recognise and make connections between different types of fractions
Here are photographs showing this work on fractions and related Mathematical terminology on our Learning Walls. After a lesson, a visual reminder of the information is displayed for students to access throughout the unit as and when they require to refresh their connection to the learning.

Each week we teach what we call our Care Class Lesson. These lessons focus on one of our 4 Cares (Care for Self, Care for Others, Care for Learning and Care for the Environment) and how they relate to specific topics relevant to our school community or relating to how students can support themselves as learners or support others in their community. The weekly topic is taught from Prep to Year 6 with consistency assisted by a Power Point provided to teachers from our Engagement and Wellbeing Team.

Bike Education Excursion Date and Payment Reminder (NB: correction for Week 6)

SOLE Care Champions
Congratulations to Ruby and Lincoln this week for receiving their Care for Others badge! There are quite a number of students who are very close to receiving Care Badges. I look forward to making further announcements.
Attendance – Unexplained absences.
Please log into QParents and check to see if your child(ren) have unexplained absences. Please provide a reason for absences in QParents or alternatively contact the front office to provide updates.
We currently have quite a high number of students with unexplained absences
Year 5 Camp Update
- Camp 1: 5B, 5F, 5G and 5H 4 - 6 August
- Camp 2: 5A, 5C, 5D, 5E and 5I 6 – 8 August
A friendly reminder to check the Camp Inventory List to ensure your child is fully prepared for camp. Not long to go!
Mathematics – Term 3
This term in Maths, students will learn about fractions. They will represent common percentages and connect them to their fraction and decimal equivalents. Students also learn to choose and use appropriate metric units and to solve problems involving perimeter and area. They will estimate, construct and measure angles in degrees and connect objects to their two-dimensional nets.
Understanding fractions, percentages, and measurement is essential in everyday life for tasks like cooking, budgeting, home improvement, and comparing prices or quantities. These skills help students make informed decisions, solve practical problems, and interpret information in real-world contexts.

Creating a Persuasive Vlog
It’s been fascinating observing the learning of our Year 6 students in their speaking and listening unit to begin this term. Not only have students had to create their own vlog, but they are required to share, develop, explain and elaborate on key issues in the community and why action should be taken.
In presenting their vlogs, students are encouraged to use a range of features of voice including volume, pace, tone, pitch, pace and fluency. I recommend getting your child to practise by presenting their ideas to you at home!
Graduation Fundraising
Thank you to everyone who has offered support for the Year 6 Graduation by donating drinks and time at our Athletics Day last term. Thank you also to our Graduation Committee who have been working behind the scenes seeking support from a range of local businesses.
In a few weeks, I will be seeking volunteer support from Year 6 families for cooking the BBQ, making up burgers, selling drinks and baking for our bake sale at the Arts Fest on Thursday 11 September. Please keep this evening free so that you can support!
